The expressway which connects a city with the suburbs is a standard as well as Toronto in Japan. But, because it is put together in the small range, a road and a railroad are concentrated in Tokyo.A railroad and a road cross complicatedly in the ground and underground and the sky because of that.A standard road to have a traffic signal machine is in the ground as well, and moreover traffic congestion is very much being done.A way which I like and to run is a country road.
So basically you guys have a freeway/expressway/motorway/autobahn right in the middle of the city going between sky scrappers?? Living in downtown toronto all my life where freeways mostly just connect the suburbs to the metropolitan core, this just boggles my mind. So are there normal roads with traffic lights underneath these elevated expressways?
unlike Toronto or most of any other cities, where there is only one downtown within a city, Tokyo have several downtowns (Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro, Kasumigaseki, Shimbashi, Shinagawa, and more...). Well Tokyo is not a city, but a megalopolis after all...
Expressways are used to connect those downtowns within Tokyo, and usually, there is only 1 entrance/exit per area. And, there are usually 6 laned roads underneath the expressways, which is used for "local traffic".
Tokyo is massive and, each downtown is often bigger than some cities around the word.
For example, Shinjuku area is one of the busiest business and entertainment district in Tokyo.
Just to give you an idea,
Population of Vancouver, Canada: 2,116,581
Daily users of a single Shinjuku subway station: 3,452,399
Tokyo is huge, and expressways are necessary to carry people across the city (Ex: Going to Work/Cargo/etc.), and people use roads underneath for living (Ex: Shopping/going school/etc).
Is it true every japanese person knows how to build a 10sec car?
