  • Growing up, my bestfriend was a guy, and we played dress up, dolls, family, barbies almost everyday and today he is defiantly straight, so I don't think that always is an indicator of who is gay or not, but it is interesting to look back at John's childhood

  • Gender is a social construct. Just had to say it.

  • tehe :3 his mama made him brownies :D double chocolate too! :D and i love how he talks with his Scottish accent with his parents... but with Scott he's American xD

  • parts 2 and 5 can be found on dailymotion

  • nice parents wish they were mine ^^

  • THUMBS UP FOR DOUBLE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES

  • Where can I find Part 2, && 5 ???

  • no, no, no... i didn't like play dolls, but i'm gay. it's not true that gay all gay children like it. i didn't.

  • Whatever happened to the whole Tomgirl thing?

  • by brother played with my barbie dolls and ran around our whole road in my communion dress and girly games and is 100% straight

  • @ilovetodreamatno3 I agree but the point is that on average these kids up gay.

  • @fashionhistorylover or have older sisters that are very controlling, i think its sad that gender discrimination still occurs with kids........best example...

"big boys dont cry."............well if they did, maybe they wouldnt end as emotionally cripled adults, out teenage boys that talk about how they feel, i mean the suiicide rate in teenage boys is so high, why becase they cant talk about how they feel, or feel theyre weak if they do, that theyre not real men.

    we need to change this..

  • omg, I love how his accent changes when he sees his family :')

  • Why is he speaking in a scottish accent??

  • @minimisstrouble He's Scottish. He picked up the American accent when he moved to the US.

  • wheres part 2?

  • @carrieslilsis I think it got removed cos of copyright shizzle :P

  • He sounds so much more natural with a Scottish accent. Lovely.

  • I love the dancing boy and tough girl! Both dancing boys. Gay/ Straight whatever works. But I personally, have always encouraged going against gender stereotypes. I was a tom boy growing up and turned out fine.

  • WHYYYYYYYYYY!!! Part 2 is missing! D:

  • @Theowest That was what I said too but they can't put up the whole thing or Youtube removes it :)

  • Aww he was so excited to see Laura.

  • For me as a straight man, being gay comes down to common sense. If being gay is a choice, I can understand if you have guys on the side who you sleep with (though I'd never choose that), but to want to be domesticated and partnered with another person of the same sex, why would you WANT, why would you CHOOSE, to do that? What with society condemning you all the way? It's funny how this documentary makes me want to know what makes me like women so much? And why they don't like me...LOL.

  • wheres part 2?

  • "...every gay man should have."

    IT'S CHER! IT'S CHER ISN'T IT?!

    "A Sonny and Cher doll."

    I KNEW IT!

  • He has an Eloise doll! Or at least that's what it looked like...

  • Where is part four?

  • @JelloDVDs The BBC blocked it.

  • @Julianakun That sucks! I think it was really brave of Barrowman to do this Making of Me thing. He is a very dedicated entertainer.

  • Extremely feminine? Look at the way John is sitting!!! Is that feminine to you? XD

  • @WolframxYuuri95 From what I've observed, people in sexual relationships are attracted to their opposite. There's always a masculine presence and a feminine presence. John is the masculine guy in his relationship with Scott. People always ask me how as a straight guy I can look at homosexuality that way - it's because I'm not a perv and I don't think about the actual gay sex act. I see people as people, not as horndogs.

  • @surfer53

Yeah that I get. I was just pointing out that the research they've been doing has a few blind spots. They treat homosexuality like a disease or some kind of genetic malfunction. I know plenty of people who are gay and a lot of them dated girls and slept with them in the past. They said they just met their partner and instantly attracted to him. It had nothing to do with whether he was male or not. It's not a disease or genetic malfuncion. It's only love. They should stop it.

  • @WolframxYuuri95 My point is that all I know is how I feel as a straight guy. I don't know if it's a genetic malfunction or a disease or not. All I know is, homosexuality, unless it's rape or pedophilia (which crosses all sexual orientations), is an individual matter between 2 consenting adults. If you want to believe it's a sin, fine. Act as such in your own life. But someone else's lifestyle is none of anyone's business.

  • @surfer53 In the end, if you're against homosexuality for religious reasons, we're all going to be judged by God. Are you that pompous and self-important that you think that you, a flawed individual, speak for the Divine? Come on. I guess my official position is that based on my information, the practice of homosexuality IS a sin. However, I'll let God judge John Barrowman, the good and the bad, thank you very much. My job is to be a decent human being to all people, gay or straight.

  • @surfer53

O_o Did you misunderstood my post? I never said I was against gay people. In fact I only like gay people. I hate straight people. All they've done to me was tease, beat, and bully all throughout my life. I was just the weird kid in the neighborhood with the twisted past. Gay people were the only ones who helped me. They'er a hell lot nicer than those straight hypocrites.

No offense to you. I like people who are nice and accept gay people; unless they're bastards by nature. -_-

  • lol, "we didn't think it was anything to do with sexuality, we thought it was to do with stupidity" XD

  • Not only overbearing mother's and absent fathers, but a sexual tragedy (rape or incest) can do it as well.

  • @Blarneybaby you've GOT to be kidding!!! i hope you don't actually believe this. NOTHING can MAKE you gay!

  • @jeepgayguy I must appologize, I phrased my words wrong. I'm saying ANYTHING can make anyone gay and choose to remain neutral on this subject because I don't KNOW the genetics of homosexuality nor do I profess to. Not to mention, I'm not gay so I don't personally know. But my cousin who is professed Lesbian, thinks the reason why she is a lesbian is because she was sexually assaulted by her father repeatedly as a very young child up to her teenage years.

  • can you get this on dvd?

  • my sister is a lesbian but she always was a girly girl she still is

    but shes lebian defoooooo!!!!!!!!!!

    :/ x

  • This is actually really funny xD

"Come into my closet. Come into my very gay closet"

  • where's 2/6?

  • where is part 2?

  • i just love JOHN'S honesty and beautiful personality.

  • I'm a 19 year old gay male, and I always played like any other boy when I was a child. I played with toy guns, killed bugs in the mud, played baseball....I don't think that gender conformed thing is very accurate. Oh and my dad wasn't absent, and my mom wasn't overbearing.

  • @magniorvir Sort of cofirms John's thoorie that you are actually born gay or straight, doesn't it?

  • Is that the same earpiece/bluetooth type thing he wears on Torchwood? LOL xD

  • Gender non-conformity is AWSUM :DDD

  • I was gender non comforming - I'm a woman and I was addicted to lego and didn't enjoy playing families when I was little. I'm totally straight though. As with many things in human behaviour - there is always an exception to the rule

  • Is John Barrowman the God of the 21st century ? Cute, sweet, smart, funny, talented, sexy as hell and lucky enough to have accepting parents who love him for who he is !!!John Barrowman... I hate you !!!

  • @pondy107 and Scots too :¬)

  • Wow... Now this makes me really think about me!

  • Oh... I LOVE this accent!!!

  • John's family is awesome! They seem so close!

  • *squeal* Torchwood style ear-piece =D

  • i played with hot wheels wen i was young and im not gay

  • @lulabell0 i played with army soldeirs, starwars toys and had a beauty and the beast castle......lol and im gay

  • part two (and the rest) are on dailymotion.

Anyway in part two he got two test: an MRI and "penile erection test" or something on different arousal pattern. basically he was shown picture of man and womean and they measured it.

The tests confirmed he's attracted to man and none whatsoever to woman.

  • @loopback69 TYSM THIS IS AWESOME!

  • is there no part 2 i cant find it :S

  • this is educational, why waste money making these docos if they don't want it seen

  • actually if live in the UK you've got the Iplayer to see all this stuff from their streaming, but it's UK only.

  • fucking bbc, what is the point of having this on here if it's cutting chunks out of it.

  • why has part 2 been blocked and not 1,3 and 6? whats the point in that, thats crazy, i was just gettin into watching that. tut bloody bollocks cocks thats what bbc stands for! lol

  • where is part 2?

  • JB is sexy and 1 million times sexier when he has his scottish accent because im scottish myself!

  • AH! The accent comes out and increases his hotness by 1000 TIMES!!~!~

  • i love how he changes his accent when he's with his family!

  • I can't help but wonder what John's neice, Clare, was looking at and talking to after she sat down at 2:00

  • it's cool to see how he falls into his regular accent when he's with his family :)

  • i really love your screen name, and this show!

    YAY John Barrowman! XD

  • I was born in Newcastle, but now live in plymouth, and lost my jordie accent completely within a short time of being down here, but if i talk to people from newcastle for more than about an hour, i pick up the jordie again, and it takes ages to get it back to what it is normally, so i totally get John switching back and forth. apparently he does it if he talks to david tennant off set too, which causes issues if john cant get rid of it on set... tehe

  • I guess he really was a friend of Dorothy as a kid.

  • Great that his parents accepted his sexuality!

  • LOL barbies x)

  • His niece is beautiful. :)

  • i LOVE his scottish accent!! he should speak with it all the time =)

  • does he speak with an accent to his parents so they can understand him better?

  • it's natural when you're born to one country and grow up in another, when he's at home with his parents or anyone scottish he naturally switches into a scottish accent without realising himself.

  • My mum does it on the phone to her jordie relatives...it's always easy to tell who she's speaking with!

  • No. He says it's something he cant control. I understand, his family moved when he still had the scottish accent, he learned american so he'd fit in, but they always spoke scottish at home. He's just normal.

  • Is there a reason why John doesn't speak with his Scottish accent all the time?

  • the reason he mainly speaks in an american accenty is coz scott, his husband doesnt likie it ahha i think it tells you in other parts hhaa

  • That is actually not true. The reason he speaks in an american accent most of the tme is because he taught himself that to avoid being teased as a kid. He avoided it by what he calls 'beating them at their own game'.

As far as Scott goes, it's true that he finds it slightly unnerving to hear John speaking scottish. John has, however, implied that when the lights are off in their bedroom Scott no longer minds. In fact he implied it had quite the effect on Scott, hehe.

  • @sarah4hp its called bidiealectial i have it as well lol

  • When I was little my parents use to buy me toys for boys and for girls so that I could choose what I would want to play with, and i always prefered to play with the boy toys i´m a girl, and allthough i feel more sexual atracted for boys i can´t deny i could fall in love with anothe girl but i would be more becouse of the personality, and as OMGItsHannz said i consider myself pansexual.

  • Nice nephew

And he´s not gay good =P

    oj

  • Me and my cousin both played with stuff for boys and girls. I've known I liked girls too from a young age, but I never really acknowleged it until last year, because I liked boys, so I never thought about it. I didn't even know what bisexual meant until I was in Year 7. I describe myself as pansexual, only recently have I found out what that means and it describes me well. But I think I might be gender-queer because some days I wanna act all girly and other days I wanna cut my hair and bind my..

  • boobs back. It's very confusing, and the first time I've admitted that I'm gender-queer. Yeah, my dad had always thought my cousin was gay because he played with me and my sister's barbies when we were younger, but recently, after I admitted to him about my sexuality, he told me he was bi. I was quite shocked to be honest, the funny thing was just before we had that conversation, a thought came in to my head, I wondered what it would be like if he was gay lol.

    Sorry, I'm rambling again, Hannah

  • oh man is tht wht we really sound like to every1, haha. gotta love it. people generally ppl dont understand the scots accent

  • My older brother played with doll s with me when I was little. It didn't mean anything but that he wanted to have fun with me. He's straight and married. I'm bisexual, and living with my boyfriend. I'm not sure you can tell by what a child plays with.

  • i think it's more a general clue, not 100% definate proof xx i thinks its very interesting though that in some people charecteristics that suggest there sexual orrientation appear when they are that young xx (my spelling is fuckingg appaling xx soz)

  • This is what saddens me when they blame our families, look at this loving family and how they are so open and loving they are with each other. Oh, when will the biogts quit blaming anyone at all for our being gay, it is just how we are! I knew I was from at least 6, didn't know the word, but boys for me were to hang out with, that's all. Society told me otherwise.

  • That reunion with his best friend from childhood was so cute. My best friend when I was little was a boy.. we used to draw on each other and play in the mud. Don't know what that says about either of us, really!

  • i love that he changes his accent :)

  • OH MY GOD! He loved "Chiquitia" by ABBA, that was the song Brian and Justin danced to on Queer As Folk. Haha, Irony.

  • I'd love it if John's mum could make me brownies... :-)

  • I dont think people turn gay as a result of gender non-conforming a think people play with dolls aor truck bcoz there already gay BUT I dont think gender non-conformity indicates u r gay.

  • When I was a kid I always played with boys, not with girls. I played all different sports like football(European), volleyball, jumped on the trees and not very high buildings. I was a leader and always challenged boys. Almost never played with dolls (I have just 2 of them. First in age 1.5 and second in age 6 which I destroyed very fast). I also was always feminine and was never attracted to women.I also got a very strong man alike personality, but I attracted to mail and not women.

  • I'm not understanding his accent. He has it when he is with his family. I would understand it more if it were because his parents didn't speak english. But with a dialect? It is just mind boggling to me right now how he comes in and out of it.

  • I was thinking the same thing the way he just slid right into that brogue when he got to his parents.

he is just adorable with his family.

  • You can actually hear snippets of it even when he is using his "american" accent. If he is around anyone with a scottish accent he tends to slip into that. Check out the Torchwood season 1 outtakes that are on Youtube. There's a hysterically funny scene with a scottish director that's making John laugh and he goes totally scottish.

  • I am a girl and I played with barbies, but also with cars and I climbed trees and stuff like that. Would that make me bisexual? I do identify as bisexual.

  • That's interesting... I never played with cars ur such and I'm bisexual too hehehe

  • I played with both barbies and cars too and I as well identify as bisexual...thats interesting (i'm a girl too)

  • I played with both cars, Lego, playmobile (Im European) and barbies/dolls, also played a lot of sports, had girls and boys as friends I played with after school, looked a bit boyish during my youth, but now much more feminine,Im female and gay lol

  • i honesly have trouble swallowing the idea that little girls are born naturally more submissive. we are CONDITIONED to be submissive. gender differs between cultures. it is learned!

gay gene? who cares! why do we need to justify our sexuality with a biological cause, as if it is illness or a genetic disorder? just be! if we can come to understand that gender is socially constructed, maybe we can learn to just love. it's all just LOVE.

  • I'm a lesbian and yet i did play with dolls and was very girly. This gender non conformist thing maybe more true of camp gay men and butch lesbians but not all gay people conform to these stereotypes. I still believe its all biological though.

  • yeah, I find it hard to swallow (pardon the expression). I am female, straight (apart from a few passionate kisses with women) and I was quite the tomboy. Loved cars, bikes, train sets, hated dolls, hated dresses. Still very uncomfortable in women's clothes. For a short time I thought I was transgendered. Then I realised that I'm just me. I am what I am as the song goes. ;)

  • Here's to the "gender non-comforming" children. Keep up the good work.

  • mmmmmm brownies! I have a craving, I want brownies!

  • I have a sunny and cher doll given to me by my mum

  • i guess he only does the scottish accent when he's around his parents? are his sisters like that?

  • yes, he only speaks with a scottish accent with his family as hes know as an american in the UK plus he was bullied about his scottish accent as a kid hence why he developed the american accent

  • Comment removed

  • Aw, his mum is so nice, with the brownies and 'loved him just the same'! And yay the Scottish accent, love it!

  • at last! the scottish accent! Ive been wanting to hear it

  • i didnt really play with dolls but im gay :S so thats irrelavent

  • I think his parents live really close to where I grew up.

  • if you are hot and gay, don't hesitate to give me a call.

btw why my msg got 6 neg? i couldnot view what I wrote now... wtf

  • hmmm.. i play with transformers... luckily there's a movie for transformers, otherwise there would be a gen gap. bet those youngents know about pokemon only. transformer during my time is huge.. Roll it, baby!!! haha I still use those words ... realized that I can use it anywhere too..

  • I grew up with Transformers and other cartoons that were around when my parents were kids.

Poke'mon was alright like, but nothing like Postman Pat and the Clangres.

  • I can't believe he has Barbies... he is SO gay. xD

  • Ugh, that attitude disgusts me.

  • omg, when he started to talk scottish accent i was like LOL

    love john, he's gr8 n i'd really like to meet him =)

  • how come he suddenly has a Scottish accent when talking to his parents?

  • Might be some interesting psychology there.

Or maybe he was just being polite.

  • He was bullied in America when he moved there when he was 8 years old, for having a Scottish accent. He learned an American accent to stop the bullying but to his parents he still speaks like a Scot. :-)

  • Aha. I can now see where John gets his sense of humor. LOL.

  • I like the earpiece. Very captain jack.

  • i live like 30 miles away from his parents i guess. i love this program!

  • "i remember when you lifted up your dress for the bus driver!"

    "yeah you taught me well!"

    LOL

  • respect to johns dad it takes a bigger man to of loved and accepted his son the way he was than to of turned him away

  • He still has the BOXES to all his toys?!?

  • I love how he reverts back to his Scottish brogue when he's with his parents! :-D

    Such a lovely man...

  • Johns and his neice Claire look very much alike i think , she has the same full lips as he does and eye shape

  • The tune at the start was like a Spanish Crazy Train cover XD

  • Does anyone know the name of a song played where a boy in the stripe shirt is dancing at 9:14?? Could it be from the 80's or early 90's?

  • His closet is fantastic.

  • Dude. John's nephew is REALLY attractive. And funny :) Hehehe. Oh my gawd.

HE WAS INTO BARBIE!? I HAD THE DOROTHY BARBIE! DUDE! LMAO!

  • Whoa.

And ... haha. I think his bluetooth headset looks like the communication systems they have in Torchwood xD

Just a random comment. He's gorgeous, this is great. Kind of sad, wipes out any sliver of a miniscule, microscopic chance I had ... but pretty d*** awesome XD

    Kat

  • Genes, maybe his grandpa or great grandparents were good looking, just my guess.

  • If you see pictures of his parent in their youth then you would not say that, Johns parents have naturally aged.... no plastic surgery , his mum is nearly 70 and i think his dad is a wee bit olderso of course they wont look AS atractive .... NOW

His mum has a cracking figure for an old lady though and she is very spritely on her feet, so is his dad and good on them i say

  • ohmygod... his scottish accent...

    *dies*

  • hes 10X hotter with that Irish accent

  • it's scottish. lol. x

  • then you're pretty thick.

  • Ok, I live in Aust and trust me when i say u's Poms all start to sound the same after a while
