i think this was the only advert land rover did for the 90, shows what a amazing 4x4 they are, they havent done 1 since and havent needed to, 70% of all land rovers ever made are still on the road to this day, try saying that about any other vehicle. ive got a 1984 90 and its the most fun vehicle ive ever owned,

Oh man, what kind of Experts here. That isn´t a Land Rover Defender. It´s a Land Rover Ninety, built from 1983 to 1989. Beyond the 1990-model it is called "The Defender". I own a 1984 LR90 for myself.

@1006xrhonda and that´s the point: a 200tdi like your father´s one is a defender, a 2.5d/td like in the video isn´t. surely you can change the doors from ninety to defender. you also can change the doors from series 2 to series 3 to ninety or to the defender.

look at the front of the ninety in the video. where ourdays is a "defender"-badge, there is a "land rover 90"-badge.

45% would be in relation to 100 % steepness. 100 % steep = 90 deg, ergo 45% = 40.5 degs.

Even less than 45 deg...that butressed wall has got to be around 70 deg (77.8%).

Of course now I see the video says driving 45% UP a hydrodam wall.....maybe it turned around 45% up the wall and drove back down.....ha ha!!

What a bunch of nonsense.....and I LOVE Land Rover Series vehicles and Defenders and have driven a 88" Series IIA for 23 years and loved EVERY minute of it...but still, what a bunch of BS....LOL.

You could winch up ANY hehicle with a good enough approach angle up that wall....and while Land Rovers CAN drive up a 45 degree incline, this is at least 60 or 65 degrees...and it's not driving.

You could winch an Austin Mini up that same damn dam (IF you had 500 feet of winch cable.....LOL!).

Yup pretty much everything he said. WAY STEEPER than 45deg, at least 60-65deg. And yea, you could winch anything up that incline provided you have the proper winch. Now what's is truly impressive is that a Toyota Land Cruiser WILL drive up an incline that steep, and it will not need the aid of a winch. I've taken my TLC's up stuff that had my analog inclinometer in my 4x4 maxed out (maxes out at 60deg). I've since added a digital inclinometer. Things that stop my Def110 are nothing for my TLC's.

I just put a clear protractor up against the screen at 00:25 and came up with 57 deg using the water as a baseline. But, strangely the rest of the dam seems WAY steeper than 57 deg, so I am thinking that footage at 00:25 was was not at that dam foot....i mean to me, parts of that dam wall look to be more than 70 - 75 deg in the vid, but I can't quantitately gauge it without an accurate visible baseline.

No, of course not. I don't even know where that dam is, and it would be pointless, not to mention illegal and incredibly unsafe. I'm just pointing out the fact that they used a winch to get the LR up the wall in this commercial. Land Cruisers are world famous for being the best 4x4, thus they don't need ads, but I have and TLC's can ascend >60deg.

Yeah....silly commercial! I wonder what Rover's point was concerning this commercial? Other than to show the decent approach angle the vehicles have (and I guess departure angle, too, I guess. And as someone else noted, with that that type of rocket-propelled grappling hook-line, you'd need a hella big winch drum to hold the amount of cable needed to get up 400 or 500 feet...and that one DOESN'T....LOL.

@pragmaticus123 If you listen to the end of the advert, it says, "Nothing can stop a Land Rover." That's the point of the advert. Yes, it's not realistic, because no road car could drive up that damn, but it looks awesome. A load of other car adverts use the same technique. For example, on one of the adverts for a Nissan 4x4, it has somebody skateboarding on it. Would that happen in real life? No it would not. Does it look good? Kinda.

@verasforzza Nonsence. You need two things to drive up steep inclines - traction, and torque. LR has a lower 1st low ratio, and it is lighter.
