  • Get the CD Live on the Double Planet !! Then go to the Aerial Boundaries release. Hedges is simply incomparable !!

  • Love him as a genius period..

  • Genius ? Yes, indeed. To write such beautifully evocative music using techniques, until then, never employed and sound like no other on the planet....? Genius. Nobody has written music for the guitar that comes close to that level of sophistication and beauty. Hedges was a genius.

  • @dudestube

right on, in the history of the guitar Michael Hedges stands alone...and tall

  • Aeriel Boundaries was used as a demo track to get me to buy a Hi Fi system back in the mid '80s. I wish I could hear as well now as I did then

  • I don't know why, but tonight a flicker in my memory caused me to recall a concert viewed on PBS I think. I spent the last hour trying to recall who that artist was, only remembering that someone told me (to my disbelief) he had been killed in a car accident. So here I find myself, happily, listening to a pod cast of Michael (PRI echos interviews). I sure would like to find a copy of that concert....

  • what year is this from? He looks really young.

  • Best Musician Ever to Live... End of story.

  • there's so much finesse in this performance... I wish the volume could have been amp'd up a little

  • Awesome performance, the section starting at 3:10 is pure heaven. I miss this guy . . .

  • i saw him play in Munich in 1988... he was absolute pure magic... I agree, one the greatest... Another one gone too soon...

  • Rest in Peace Michael Hedges.

    We miss you.

  • Pure genius. So sad we lost him.

Rest in Dear Peace Michael Hedges.

I hope you are teaching the Gods now.

  • A true pioneer

  • man he looks so much younger here compared to his other vids

  • I did sound for Michael when he was playing around Baltimore. This video looks to be from that era - late '70's.

  • Oh wow... I just had the pleasure of briefly speaking to Michael Manring, and he told me that is where they met -- Baltimore. I wonder what was in the air there back then...

  • I saw him live in Munich in 1987- he was unreal! aerial boundaries is one of the greatest records ever! thanks Michael- u still rule bro...

  • Was that the concert in a place called "Schlachthof" (=slaughterhouse) - if so, I was there too!

  • wow man 1:53 is so incredible the way he decides to phrase it for this performace

  • one of the best song ever...

  • Each part of it just blends seamlessly into the next- without you even noticing him change he'll be playing another melody and then he'll be back to the first, but it all just washes together like a watercolour... Truly beautiful

  • someone contact the publisher of this vid I want the dvd

  • anyone know what year this is ?

  • a low D? did you listen? I never heard a more clearer low C ;-)

  • BallofBase, Uh, that would be sad for the sake of his memory. Think with you mind, not your feelings and emotions on this one.

  • unbelievable!!!! transending!!

  • Wonderful stuff. Not to rain on the poster's parade, and I stand *willing to be corrected*, but he's playing Open "D" on the low string ... open ;-)

So the tuning given in the "more info" comment can't be totally correct.....

  • lol renaissongsman is wrong. I play this tune, and type3 has the tuning correct :)

  • can someone say "born to play guitar"?

  • or was the guitar made just for him?

  • Excellent.

  • I think this his best recorded performance...

  • From what I understand, John C. Reilly is going to potray Micheal Hedges in an up and coming movie.

  • Seriously?

  • Where on earth did you hear that?! Hedges must not be forced on the mainstream! They must discover him themselves!

  • Brilliant! Thanks, Mandycaly, for sending this magical music to me! 5 ***** !!!

  • Amazingly Beautiful~~ Thank YOU for posted~~

  • This man is a great guitarist. He has put all his minds focus into his music. To say that he calls upon spirits or that he has been blessed with a great talent is to do him a disservice.

  • A very young Michael Hedges here

  • Reminds me of Segovia!

  • i think he's a great,if it wasn't for youtube

i never would of discovered him,

  • @evelskunny me too.thank God youtube existe for whats matter.

  • Chills

  • I think the guy may be the greatest guitar player of the 20th century. Genius is taking a guitar (or anything for that matter) to another level. Its on the level of Thomas Edison, Mozart, Scot Joplin, Hendrix. He never got the recognition to the level of those geniuses because he shattered the mold. No one has ever played the guitar to make it sound like 2 or 3 playing at once. It shear brilliance of a mega talent and mega genius for the ages! His music speaks for itself!!!!

  • Sorry to intervene, but if were going to talk about people who never got the recognition they deserved, then don't mention that bastard Thomas Edison. He's nothing but a jealous, greedy son of a bitch who just wanted his glory. If we would of listened to Nikola Tesla back in the early 1900's we would be hundreds of years in the future. He was the true genius of that era, not that fuck Edison. Big deal he invents the most sufficient light bulb, Tesla's work puts that envious man to shame.

  • I mentioned Edison strictly because I was talking about genius and invention. The definition of genius is using your talent to the benefit of others (or soceity). Not interested in some political debate in whether Tesla got his due in terms of recognition. If you think that is what my comment is about then you missed my point. Please don't turn this into a debate I won't respond to any debate bs - not going there. My point is how Hedges was on the level of great genius and nothing more. Peace!

  • @Cldfsn0200 Exactly what I'm thinking, i completely agree with you, good comment

  • You should hear what steve vai has to say about him. h e is my hero. Love you much Michael.

  • @Cldfsn0200 He's unique but not a genius, unless you guage stuff by wossername rather than wotsit. You're unique but no Einstein. I'll eat my arse the next time music speaks

  • @Cldfsn0200 While I agree that he is incredible, there have been a few other musicians that have been able to make one guitar sound like multiple. Take Nick Drake, a fine example.

  • march 2009

    india

    bangalore

Exams that wud decide our futures

every morning of those two weeks, i made it a ritual of listening to this song in particular along with some others..

    call me superstitious...

    i scored a 100 in math..

good stuff in the other subjects too..

thank u michael, one of the best inspirations ever!!

  • i do believe this man channelled spirits when he played

  • brilliant..love the emotion!!

    peace

    connor shaw

  • It looks like he's playing in the old Rathskeller in the student center at Kent.

  • magic.

  • exelente musica del alma que calma :E

  • maybe you should try reading the video info at the right top of the screen next to the video

  • wow, if you truly think this is crap, you register about zero on the "has any sense of music" meter; most likely you are just a troll

  • seriously, and you have missed how many notes playing this. come on...

  • When I was a wee spotty heavy metaller, I listened to lot of Hedges. His music makes everyone so happy! It is so sad that he has gone - so cool that he has changed the way an instrument is approached! I can recall dozing off to this tune during a rare Mancunian hot spell . ..

  • amazing.blows my mind.

  • Just breaks my heart that I just learned that he died over 10 years ago. Loved the song when it first came out.

  • I'll never forget his music poems!!!!!

  • it gets better every time!

  • Such a nice tune!

    ^_^

  • The Hedges estate would be well advised to release all of this video instead of repackaging the same music into greatest hits albums year after year.

  • he was my friend and i miss him so much.

  • Michael Hedges never had a Facebook page before. So I decided to start my own. Just go ahead and type in "Michael Hedges" in the search box and you'll see the page: "Michael Hedges: The Guitarist from Another Planet". I want to see if Hedges's fanbase is still out there somewhere. Long live Hedges!

  • Years ago, I had the tape - Windham Hill Sampler frm 1984 that opened with Aerial Boundaries, and I loved it. I've been seeking some guitar music to listen to on my iPod at work and instantly thought of that song. I had no idea he died. I just purchased everything on iTunes they had. Such talent lost.

  • Charlotte NC Here. My wife and I had the great pleasure of seeing this incredible man play live at Spirit Square months before he died. For me, this song is the ultimate Michael. I consider this his MASTERPIECE.

    RIP Michael.

  • You could break a lot of Guitars trying to figure out how this man does it.

  • What a loss......He was a great player.

  • In 1984 a friend called me and another friend into his dorm room to hear "something new." I heard Michael Hedges for the very first time. "Aerial Boundaries" was the opening track on the album of the same title. The room was silent ... reverential. I remembering staring out of a window and imagining an eagle or hawk soaring (with purpose). He looks so young in this video -- maybe he had just composed the tune. What talent!

  • A few years after that, '87 or '88, my friend & I went to return a video. While waiting, they had a Windham Hill sampler video playing on the display TV. Here's this white cornrowed guy with this freakish instrument (accoustic harp-guitar), drawing out sounds I never would've conceived w/mesmerizing motion, eyes closed w/that deep, contented smile, his body just grooving w/the sound from head to foot. We just stood there in awe and watched and listened. My 1st time hearing Michael. Sublime.

  • this clip just brought me to tears......thanks

  • Im completely new to hedges but Wow. im a huge fan of keller williams and he lists hedges as his biggest influance. i see why now...

  • Wow, absolutely amazing!

It's so much more amazing to actually see the fingering and hear at the same time.

When I just listen, I find myself thinking, how the heck did he do that. Seeing it still doesn't really answer that question, but it gives it a whole other dimension.

  • for me he'll always be THE born musician

  • Lovin' those bass notes from 3:34 to 4:00

  • This is the most dynamic performance I've seen of his... it's probably because this tune was so new to even him then!

  • when was this performance? he looks about 21! one of the all time greats indeed

  • Thanks for posting this, the best guitarist I've ever seen live was Michael. This song gives me the chills everytime I hear it. What a tremendous loss...

  • Who's this guy? I don't think he does it as good as the original guy who did it. I mean it's alright but... ;-)

  • he's the original guy :) and i've only found one other performance by someone else that even comes close; but hedges did have a lot of different looks...

  • I hope you got the joke tone from that. hence the wink at the end!!

  • oh, no i didn't! sorry, i get a lot of comments of all types, often people not knowing anything about him; sorry for missing it!

  • no worries man. I've been a big fan since I discovered him a few years back. great artist. he will be remembered like the greats no doubt. these videos have been a great resource for learning his tunes/songs so thank you.

  • hey, have you heard his version of zappa's "sofa"? if not check it out

  • @type3secretion

thx so much for bringing as much hedges as you do to you tube. Im such a huge fan.

What a beautiful dance he does with his guitar on this one. Kent State.....man almost brings me to tears.

  • That was such a GREAT comment! I am still laughing!

  • @methodinsane he's a MH poseur and fake wannabe oh wait its mikey himselfso neveeer mind.Lol

  • He trancended the guitar . Areial Boundries was from an other planet

  • He was so young here... its hard to let go of...still amazing.

  • Words cannot express how good this is.

  • YA..his music lives..a fuckin benchmark for playing SOLO GUITAR period

  • I saw him in a little club in Rochester, NY 2 weeks before he died. So sad we lost him!

  • Such a gift, thanks for this video, Michael's joy as he plays this is more than I can bear, such a shame to have lost him. No one's ever played like this, and never will, not like this, Michael's gift was unique.

  • D-28.

    Keller Williams plays an HD-28.

  • Aye a D-28. The HD-28 has scalloped braces amongst other differences.

  • Keller is what lead me to hedges.... love that k -dub! Whoo hoo!

  • I saw Michael Hedges once when i was 8 he is a great guitarist... and my dad is fortunet enough to own the same guitar used in this video (Martin HD-28) Hedges is my favorite guitaris of all time... no one can play as clean as him... great song

  • His dynamics on this particular performance are extremely tight. Very inspiring.

  • Wow, he's so young here ... priceless video. Thanks for sharing :)

  • Great video for us guitarists. He was a true original who carved his own path. I like the fact that now and then he'd smile while he was playing, a young man enjoying his art and talent.

  • I remember that smile when he'd play. :) I miss that.

  • cool! I believe that michael is the greatest of every time!

  • Thank you for posting the video. I saw Michael perform three times in small venues in California and Texas and his music and presence ever speaks to my soul. Blessings.

  • Man that guitar looks so clean there. Wow.

  • just GREAT

  • So majestic.

  • Great performance thanks for sharing, still can't believe it's only one guitar playing.
