Because of TV ratings, of course. Besides the case, people want to see the flash and the hard stuff rather than the base of the basics. I think this is retarded. I recorded ALL of the Olympic diving back in 2004 (when I was in my prime diving, now I don't anymore) and I took the basic dives into stride. Ever since around 2006 or so, they took off basic diving because it was just a waste of energy.

they have a guided freefall into a partially submerged but air tight part of the pool. when the diver begins his/her dive the camera is dropped and because both things fall at 9.8m/s^2 the camera is able to follow the diver quite easily

The form you have determines the score you get, not how hard the dive is. Each dive has a "Degree of Difficulty" which is then multiplied by the sum of the scores you received for the form to get the final score for the dive.
