You're lucky to even have one of the Vintage Moxen. All I got are a buncha Chrome Moxen and I think a couple of Lotus petals. Gotta check my collection to see if I have a Lion's Eye Diamond somewhere in there.
The price of peace is the Country's most valuable symbol. Think of it that way: Would you trade the Statue of Liberty, Lincoln's Statue, or Philadelphia's Bell for a piece tready ? especially if you where at equal arms (or so) with the warring nation ? Not sure I'd be OK with that myself.
Sidequests are actually really good.... if theyre optional. If its needed as part of the main storyline then yea it can be annoying. But optional is great because if you hate them you can avoid them but if you want a break from the story you can wonder off and help some people or whatever.
Yeah, I remember I thought it was Bertie and Bart as well the first time I played it as well. I think the game actually sets it up so that the player think this way, then they fake us out at the last minute. Quite clever!
Rubies have a hardness of 9.0 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Among the natural gems only moissanite and diamond are harder, with diamond having a Mohs hardness of 10.0.
One of the townspeople in your last episode said something along the lines of "couldn't the ruby be made out of glass?" or some such, which did make me think of this guy even through i've never played the game before. A little cryptic, but the game DOES give you a hint.
@McGack1 you forget HCBailey that gamers used to have to think for themselves back in the day, it seems like a crazy impossibility to you now that the answers are sitting there easier to access than ever, back then it was the case of trying everything and asking your friends, also hes the ONLY guy in the whole game related to ruby anything
It's been awhile since you made a Magic reference lol... I now HATE that game with a passion! I use to love it... but new sets were released too frequently and I couldn't have fun with the cards I already had and it quit that shit haha
"Prince Alex! Are you trying to insult me?!" Hmm, his name is Leon, but in the DS version this is going down between Bound Kingdom and Gratze Empire, in that Alex is Leon's younger brother. A simple mistranslation, or a slight bit of a beta script left in?
Ah, man... I cannot wait to see part 41. I played Lufia II about 3 times about 10 years ago and I loved it. I will play it again. I did play the first version of Lufia recently after the days of Maxim, but I once lost interest due to freaking hard enemies in the ocean waves when traveled by ship and I once got lost and confused. Alas, the battle system is quite inferior compared to Lufia II, as attacking a monster that is not there is quite annoying, even though I can handle it.
I'm glad you're being more open about FF 12 HCBailly. People do tend to hate on it a lot, and I don't blame them for it; the example you gave being a very good reason, and one I agree with. But it isn't a bad game either.
I will say that unlike in FFs 7, 8, and 10 you can't make your characters ungodly powerful. I mean, they do get strong of course, but it's not abusable. On the other end though, you HAVE to grind somewhat to get through the game, especially for money.
Man, I can't find a rom for this game. After following this LP since it began, I've now started craving it. Don't say anything about the DS version, I haven't mustered the energy attempt playing it again.
Suddenly the whole ruby-icon thing reminds me of the first game... are they supposed to be exactly the same thing, or is it just like a reoccurring theme for player nostalgia?
I don't know, but somehow I knew right away where to go when I got to this point in the game. Maybe the thieves reminded me of the earlier part of the game... or maybe it was because I had so much trouble with the spider boss during that part that it stuck out in my memory. It is a very nice reference back to an earlier part of the game. Don't see that too often.
Jep, ruby's are pretty hard. Because they are basically impure diamonds, I think. Though, I could be wrong there.
Hm... dunno how hard it is to figure out to go back... I guess it's rather unique but I liek that. It slighly challenges the players intelligence to think of what to do on their own.
About XII, game developers want you to experience large and different parts of the world of ivalice, and the story needs to carry you there. I imagine its hard to piece it all together. And yet even with all that travel the story won't carry you to some hidden placed they put in just for exploring. I loved that.
I know I was confused here too at first, because I assumed you were supposed to look for the thief instead of immediately trying to replace the ruby icon. But there are two NPCs from Auralio give hints about Jaffy (you even talked to both of them in the last video), so it's not like it's completely out of the blue.
"Got one for Tia and she left me. I'd rather not try it with my wife!"
You know I never had trouble figuring out where to go at this point at the game. ^.^ I think some of the NPCs say something about Clemento after it goes missing. :P
@7thlittleleopard I took a look around. Two NPCs say something like, "If only someone could just make another one." I suppose that's better, but considering that they're just two random NPCs, it's still pretty easy to miss the clue. Not to mention, that Ruby Apple incident was a long time ago, and I'd imagine most players would have forgotten who it was or where to go by now.
@HCBailly True. I used to play with my brother watching (or watch him play, we took it in turns) so one of us would at least remember something that helped to progress the game. That said, maybe because I was the 'map-keeper' and he was the 'battler' - that may have had something to do with it. I was my job to remember/know where to go. I did a pretty good job too - found lots of secrets by pointing out things to check - like Bleu's hideaway and the magic school in BoFII, for example. :P
"No game is perfect." Actually some games have been given a 40/40, meaning they are perfect. Not to mention a game called RADIANT HISTORIA! If that's not hypo-criticism then I don't know what it is.
Ahh, so you're giving FF12 a shot. My God, is it ungodly long and complex! Any opinions on the playable characters, or maybe on the fact that you can take control of any character while in battle as opposed to trusting the AI to act properly as in FF13? I'm partial to Balthier, myself.
@TianaSidhe I'm okay with automatically controlled characters in both games, especially for the more mundane actions in battle, as it streamlines the combat system. That said, I strongly prefer how FF13 handled it, so that magic was extremely useful. I'm 35 hours into FF12, and I don't think I have very basic gambits, like Foe: elemental weakness, that are built into FF13. Beyond Cure and Self: buff, magic has been virtually unusable to me in FF12.
@HCBailly actually HCBAIILY, i have some usefull advice for ff12. i had trouble with finding most gambits useull. when you get the "arise" spell just replace it with the cure self. because your just wasting mp trying to cure to allies when they are just going go back down to low health in another few seconds. i didn't like ff12. the summons were quite useless, and the quickenings i only used for the chance of doing more damage than the enemies hp.
@HCBailly I thought buffs were quite useful in FF12. I always had gambits in place to cast bravery/haste/berserk on Basch, which made him a powerhouse of a fighter (especially with the Masamune or Zodiac Spear). Also, I used Bubble and Reverse when I felt it was necessary. As far as debuffs go, I seemed to have good luck with immobilize/disable for normal enemies, and blind/silence for bosses. Only against flying enemies or very strong enemies or bosses did I switch in a gambit for casting magic
The only offensive magic I use in FF12 beside Purge is shock....others have too long an animation (as you can't cast another spell with any char while one is beeing casted) or don't damage enough to be worth it which is quite sad. But I still find FF12 battle system to be the most enjoyable of all FF overall.
@HCBailly I find that poison and blind are really helpfull against tougher enemies that you can meet on the world map like those rings dragons or the Tyrannosaurus ennemies because they have a lot of HP and they do a lot of damage too. However toxify the multi targeting poison spell isn't that great because I don't use poison on small enemies in FF12. So maybe you should give a try to some of the green magic spells.
@HCBailly one thing i realized about FF12.... when i started to ignore the plot and focused on the battle mechanics, i started to have a lot of fun with the game, the game had to grow on me and eventually it did and I enjoyed it.
White and Green Magic are way, way more useful than black magic in FF12. Black magic can be ignored altogether for the entire game.
This doesn't really bother me since buffs are so much more useful than they are in most FFs.
Gambits should have been 100% available at the start of the game (or close) instead of gradually made available through shops. I'm a big fan but even I think this is a flaw.
@JohnRayJr Yea offensive magic in XII was pretty blah, it's way more efficient to simply melee enemies to death even if they have an elemental weakness. When I came across flans, I would always switch out 1-2 peoples' weapon to polearm, since it checks the enemy's MDF instead of DF. I think the only spell I used hat wasnt a cure or a buff was drain, because it does pretty damn good non-elemental dmg plus you heal some hp on top of it. I used it a lot against high DEF or flying mobs.
@HCBailly Yeah, one beef I had with XII is that you don't get "Foe: weak to X" until literally the last town in the game. Before that, if you just use any old magic, so long as the enemies aren't strong against it, its pretty powerful. You just need mystic type armor.
@HCBailly You don't really need the elemental weakness gambits. Set a gambit to cast Libra on Self. This will let you see your foe's elemental weakness, then you can just cast the appropriate spell manually, or set up a gambit to use an attack spell, and just rotate what spell is cast depending on the enemy's weakness. The only thing is Libra doesn't work on bosses, thought I'm not convinced the elemental weakness gambit will work on them either.
@TianaSidhe I've never beaten the game myself, but I seem to remember being told that the game itself (story-wise) is not that long, it's the number of side quests that makes it insanely long though.
