Actually Lena is neither creole nor black. She's stated in the novel as a Cajun. Its a big difference, mostly consisting of everything BUT African American lineage. But at that time, they were still looked down upon as swamp rats, or people inferior to the society of the wealthy French-Creoles.
In case people are wondring about Abigail, there were Quadroons and Octoroons that could pass as white because they have one African drop blood in them, though in literature they are always portrayed as tragic figures,Sybil Klein's Creole best explains this.
you sure? cuz the way i envisioned it is leah being an african america descendant. the beginning of the book dated 1899, years after the slavery law was passed. and by then african american and others would have jobs by then and be at least accepted by others. also in the book it said that abigail had a olive complexion. roberts could have just said milky complexion. then abigails daughter married a man of her status/race. so that mean leah an african american.
@jessiejanesama Just got done reading the book, her skin was "liquid gold" usually meaning more of a darker tan color, but not black, as-well as she was hired, not a slave, and the language they use d"cher" for instance, often was like the french, so amusing that was part of there language shown that they could have been french, often french people have a golden like skin colour, and the hair is dark with curls, again like most french
hmm, ok. ok i still think abigail is black. it was 1899 of course there wouldn't be anymore slave since the law abolished the slavery law. and black people would have picked up french people's language. cher means dear or expensive. abigail's mother could have been rape or from a family with her mother that had an affair with a black man. but what did nora roberts said about her character? someone should just flat out ask her.
@jessiejanesama Sorry, I wanted to throw my 2cents in. I believe that Abigail/her descendants in the book/movie make her/them out to be Louisiana Creole (there are different types/ethnicities of "Creole Peoples" in certain parts of the world). The reference of "Louisiana Creoles" at THAT time period was used to distinguish French/Spanish colonial descendants who were born in Louisiana territory from newer immigrants. So her 'olive/gold' complexion confirms that. Mixed race meanings came later.
@jessiejanesama like all races, creole people also come in all different shades. Creole is a mix of an native american, african, and french/spanish ancestry. This is sometimes confused w/Cajun or Acadian which is simply a mix of european and Native American ancestry... Either way, like brasiliens, dominicans or cubans, most creoles (of colour) are black, they simply have a different ethnic history. I come from a creole family, if you look at the last 3
@Safirlady Thankyou, its amazing how people tend to exlude the 'African' part out of Creole, when in fact there the French,Spanish and Portuguese had offsprings with their slaves coining that term Criollo. The Louisiana Cane River people was a creole family that came from the slave coincoin and a French Planter. These were Creoles of color. I myself came from a Creole of colour family originally fromHaiti. I felt Anne Rice was writing my family history perfectly in 'Feast of the Saints'.
@jessiejanesama generations , we all come from the same bloodline, but appear to be 3 different races, lol..This often happens in creole families as well, best;)!!!LeS...
