  • Doesn't turpentine do the same effect?

I'm pretty sure it does. .

  • @georgiasurf07 possibly, though it's very smelly, especially if you want to speed up the process with a hair dryer...used to give me terrible headaches when oil painting until I discovered odourless thinners which do the same job

  • @georgiasurf07 did you notice he was on the bottle

  • You just reuined it!

  • So after you let it dry then put the poppies on there???Was that it?

  • So is this something to keep the soft pastels from smearing?

  • I am the only one who thought that was stupid >_> ...sorry but it was just silly. Maybe if done on certain areas but that was just sloppy and it looked like a piece of colorful poo. whatever.

  • sa-weet!

  • I just bought some and it didn't work for me, is there a certain kind of paper you have to use or a particular brand of pastels? I use Strathmore Bristol 300 series Vellum. I used my new pan pastels which did not move at all and my Rembrandt soft pastels. The Rembrandt's worked a little, do you have to use a lot of layers of color?

  • @cherrybombthreat The paper must have agood tooth so that you can get loads of pastel on the surface, Fisher400 art paper work well

  • @cherrybombthreat It works better on rougher papers where you can deposit lots of pigment, I tend to just use the Bristol 300 for line and wash which you can see in my article in Feb 2011 Leisure Painter

  • so cool, can't wait to try

  • follow me @Graffitibunny on twitter

  • i am a young artist please folow me @GraffitiBunny

  • pretty sure you can get the same effect with paint thinner too. It looked like he used a very large amount of product on that surface and it's probably a pretty expensive product. Doesn't seem like you would get very much for your money.

  • Very interesting... Nice technique

    Great works

    Thanks for sharing

  • Wow, you sure had me fooled. The first couple of seconds I thought you were just messing up on purpose, but then you created all those beautiful pastel drawings on top of the liquified colors. Brilliant!

  • cant u get teh exact same effect using baby oil? ive done it a couple times and it gives a similar blending effect

  • you get an effect as you can with water, but each technique gives a slightly different result

  • WOW !!! That's amazing!!!

  • I have to stand on plastic too. The wife put new carpet in my studio. She thought she was doing me a favour, but I have to be less messy. And my last few strands of hair stand on end if I move my feet!

Thanks for this. I must look into it.

  • love ur style

  • such great material

    yeah I love it too

    great tutorial

    thanx

  • great effect, loved all your videos so far.

oh and its kinda cool to have your own liquifier named after yourself. i hope i will have something comparable some time soon :)

kinda bob ross like ;) thanks

  • Good old Tim ^^ Ty :D 5/5

  • Thanks Tim. Obliged

  • This is quite interesting. Wouldn't one be able to get the same effect, by using watercolour in strong washes on heavy paper, then pastelling over that after it's dry?

(Although I like the rough tooth of 'Royal Sovereign' myself. )

    Regards

    JW

  • in short, no...it's a completely different effect. Also the pastel surface is still mobile after spraying so some further manipulation of the surface is possible

  • i like that it is verry cool this is profile on my fother i like paint with soft pastels and you give me now a verry cool idea thanks verry much this is a water efect ! :) can i make it with alcohol

  • Hello, We are portrait artists & are just about to try your paper and liquifier, please would you tell us whether this can also be used as a final fixative, or if not can you recommend a suitable one to use with your products please - we tend to use Faber Castell & Schmincke soft pastels. Thank you

  • I'm afraid it's not designed as a final fixative. I would recommend Sennelier Latour fixative- it comes with a very fine spray and should not affect the surface of your work if used lightly. Let mje know when you've completed a portrait, I would be interested to see the result

  • Thanks very much for taking the time to reply - all ordered and hopefully on the way. We are in the middle of completing our port folio gallery and will let you know the outcome of our efforts on your paper etc - Really looking forward to see what we can create. Thank you once again - Debs & Johnny

  • Hi, Sennelier manufacture it...I think it's alcohol based, so don't paint and drive!!

  • Alcohol, water or is it just turpenoid?
