Dear author, it is incredibly curly hair, my sister succumbed to these machinations :) Now you can put it to some sort of picture perfect backdrop. Thank you again
I've spent the past 2 hours of my life trying to watch different tutorials on how to do this. I finally came to yours and I thought it was the secret to success. I kept having this problem where the hair turns white and I need to fix it. No one else suggested painting it back in with the brush and I did it and all it did was paint back in the back ground. I must be an idiot but I still can't get it to work. My strands are not showing up. Two hours...gone. It's not like this is difficult :(

@usarmy87 I was just going to say the same thing. I have a client who wants me to cut her from a forest background. All the different greens and browns make it a bit difficult. Even the extract filter doesn't do a great job. Any suggestions anyone?
I notice most (hair extract) tutorials always have a simple blend background. I'll like to see it done with a (forest) background.. any out there?.. thanks
@SirN0LAN The tool is called Refine Edge and comes up in the Select menu when you have a selection. If it's definitely not there then maybe your Photoshop version could do with upgrading.

By refining the edge on my photo it somehow always makes the photo paller + It doesen't really select anything more.. I mean, I do see what's behind the white (By you it's black), but when i release the mouse nothing happens. (exept, as I said, the image getting paller)
Any help? Actually had to have the photo done by now already. :/
Brilliant tutorial! It was very well explained and easy to follow even for a relative newbie like me! Thanks for taking the time to produce and share this! :)
