Notice his ambidexterity, playing accents on both left and right hand. Add to that his endurance + consistency. And the obvious, speed. All this plus he has to keep time at this speed. And scooter9023 is right, John's a jazz player. I respect that you prefer JJ, but if you think "all he's doing is playing really fast," you're dead wrong.

I'd recommend their first album. It may be the slowest, but as far as the variation in his playing goes it's excellent. He does a lot of interesting things w/ the cymbals and has some of the best rhythms on any of the albums, in my opinion.

From my 1st hearing of metallica in '85 to this very moment I find that no music can ever compare to the authentic brutality of metal: music's most complete art form. Any of you guys listen to Sunn O)))? Brutal in the exact opposite way;slower than slow will EVER be. Yet just as powerful,not inspite of that fact, but b/c of it.

Not really, you have to loosen up your grip and control the drumstick with your fingers, this will aid in greater acceleration.

You can do this by practicing with a simple drumroll and let the stick bounce off the drums while pressing slightly and tipping the drumstick with a slight open grip focusing on holding the drumstick between your index finger and thumb that is the advice I got from my drum teacher a few years ago when I started playing Jazz/fusion, but I have noticed that it helps greatly when you start doing intensive blasts. :)
