If you look at the very end(credits) you'll see that L is standing over Light while he dies, like how Light stood over L when he died. I'm not sure if it's in the manga, but in the anime it is. Though again it could just be a part of Light's hallucinations since he did go physco near the end.

He faked his death. Because he obviously cooperated with rem during the day or two that light and him weren't connected. Which was his main reason for wanting to split in the first place. Anyways he cooperated with rem because she hated light. He took some sort of substance to slow his heart and make it look like a heart attack. Then he helped Near behind the scenes. The coolest thing about L is he is a TRUE emo.
Everything about him: the way he walks, stands. His hairstyle, black makeup under his eyes, and pale complexion. His monotonous voice and epic reactions make him the perfect emo.
And to think people say "Emos are fags".
Anime is an Emo's best friend so to put an emo in an emo's best friend makes L a fantastic character. (and this is coming from somebody who supports Kira.)

@tomhulcelover Oh. Well then clearly the people at Shonen Jump are twice as retarded as I am since the human brain can only go a week without sleep before the person goes insane and eventually it will get so tired it will shut down in a month. (in other words the person dies)
But the biggest dumbass on the face of the earth is the one who didn't see the episode when Matsuda says to aisowa "I saw him sleeping in that exact position the other day." So he does sleep dumb fuck.

Rem did and if that stupid God of Death dident sacrifice it self to save Misa Amane L would still be alive and Light well...not so much L Lawliet would have found out that the 13 day rule was fake and therefor will still suspect Light of being Kira and Light would have probably been cought and executed.

L should have an anime on his own i mean he is the best character i ve seen so far he is smart he has style he is honest he aint spoiled and most of all he doesnt brag about it, ofc i love him cuz he says exactly what he thinks an most of the time he is right and hardly you can respond to him like "you are wrong" or "thats not the deal" .simply the best character they could make for this role i really cant believe that i would find a similar character to this one in another anime i wish i lie!

L discovered from te start that light was kira,he just wanted to prove it. for L to die a deathgod needed to sacrifise his self to kill L. But no matter how much i like L i can say light is the smartest he win the only reason he lose at the end is because of that idiot makami if i remember correct

@tzatzikistube if Rem hadnt given Misa that stupid Death Note, L might not have had to die, and Light might have gotten caught...might being the word here. L is the smartest character, but he couldnt have won, seeing as Light knew more facts, L had to figure them out in a round-about way, and he didnt figure it out fast enough,,leading to his death
