The only reason Eau Claire requires $60 million worth of (more) jail space is because we're filling it with people who don't belong there. This proposal (and more specifically its location) is ridiculous, don't get me wrong, but there's a bigger issue at hand. If we're going to continue to arrest and jail people on nonviolent, drug possession charges, I think we can expect an ever increasing law enforcement budget and need for facilities such as this.
Good Luck. We got a truck scale a few miles up the FreeWay from us after the Ag folks let it be known that they (State of Wisconsin) were eating up valuable cropland for the sake of a few bucks income for the state. Better to put toll booths on the Illinois and Minnesota borders, less obtrusive and more moola. How do these knuckleheads get appointed anyway? Dayglow Blugolder 69-74..God Help us All. Amen.
I used to roof awhile ago, and one of the jobs that I worked on was on the roof of the EC County house, and there is supports on the roof up there that you could easily add another floor, why in the hell can't they just put the jail on the the building that already exists. For one it would be a lot cheaper, and second, it would not take no other valuable land space. Then all you would have to do is build a parking garage for the extra parking that you would need. Charge for the parking 2 pay4it
I think that building the jail downtown is the right thing to do. To me it doesn't make sense to transport "jail birds" all the way across town, it is costly, unsafe and time consuming. Also if their is a larger jail built in this area their will be a need for more employees!! I thought DECI was trying bring more people/jobs downtown and it seems to me that this is exactly what this would do.
The jail will create more jobs no matter where it is built. Costly? No, it will be more costly to build on the riverfront than on the outskirts. Unsafe? Why is it more unsafe to have the jail on the outskirts than downtown? Transporting prisoners to and from court is the only inconvenience, and it is a minor one. The benefits of maintaining downtown in its current state and not depreciating its value outweighs this one small inconvenience.
I live on first ave. and bike past this proposed location nearly every day. The area is beautiful, and has potential to greatly improve, so why plop down a big concrete jail!!??
They built the new jail there anyway! Eau Claire County courts and jail system are a gang in themselves. They milk everypenny out of you. Theives!
