Its been a great week here in Ireland. Our new priminister finally gave the pope a proper going over re: the lies, cover ups, and ongoing abuses of the catholic church in relation to innocent children. Telling him that the rule of law supercedes canon law. Not being from Ireland, you would never appreciate the control the church had on all levels of government, the police, and everyday people. The church was never questioned and we have a history of destroyed lives because of blind faith!
@usurynation I was reared Roman catholic, left for "whatever reason(s)," (re)converted to Chrsitianity again through evangelical Protestantism, and am currently Eastern Orthodox (reunited with the apostolic Church, but not yet in full communion with the See of Peter). I will hopefully be fully reunited with the Roman Catholic Church at some point, but I have many issues to work though. But when I think about my favorite authors and thinkers, I wonder why so many of them are Roman Catholics.
if you guys like Rome you should check out "I Claudius" the TV series or the book by Robert Graves...but who reads books anymore, just watch the TV series. LOL! But seriously, Graves did a great job.
Farther Barron, if ever you want to review I Claudius, you'll have a listener in me.
first time i watch this i didn't like the drama.. lol but i got hook on the show because of the battles.. but its going get better if they show Herod they will show Jesus :)
Whoa..that's some bad ass commentary..haven't seen Rome..will now..haven't seen Sopranos..will now...when i saw that Mel Gibson Passion movie..although the violence was outta hand and went on forever..I loved the unseen concept of some great mythololigical power struggle or war happening behind the scenes..while simple politics are happening literally. Dig it.
The Roman Empire pratically collapsed when Christianity was adopted, Europe entered a Dark Age for a thousand years and was nearly overrun by Islamic hoards...it was only because of a rise in secularism and the seperation of church and state that we prevailed and took our rightful place in the world.
The Gospel according to Fry and Hitchens I presume? I think Gibbon's 18th century "enlightenment" analysis is no longer held by modern historians. You should read Grants The Climax of Rome for the economic and Military reasons behind the collapse. Oh and your wrong about the islamic hordes. Ever hear of Adrianople, Alaric, the Visigoths, Attila, the Huns?
@eaglewalrus - what do you mean wrong about the Islamic hoards? Europe was weakened after Roman collapsed and it left us open to outside invasion - Spain, Sicilly, Malta, all of North Africa and Anatolia was overrun by the Muslims.
I did not say the Muslims were responsible for the fall of Rome - only that Rome falling enabled the Muslims to spread as much as they did. Mentioning Alaric, Attilla etc is revelant to the Rome's getting weaker (already Christian by then as well).
i can not confirm 100% at the moment but here is what i know. the society of St Pius x is a traditionalist catholic organisation founded by the renegade bishop Lefebre in 1970. the society is NOT IN FULL COMMUNION WITH THE CATHOLIC CHUCH. At the moment they are in dialogue with Rome and until the doctrinal differences are sorted out THEY DO NOT HAVE CANONICAL STATUS
@usurynation the catholic church is one of the best intellectual power houses in the world with a very deep rooted intellectual history. am sure u could find your place in the church, give it a go . God bless
KKKhristianity has murdered more people than hitler and stalin combined, it ids the most evil ideology that has been imposed on our poor human race....KKKristianity must be totally exterminated if the human race is to survive!!
People have killed more people than the all those examples combined. Despise the weakness and greed in men that allows them opportunity to use such things as ideologies and religion as vehicles to satisfy personal gain. Blaming the elements used as vehicles to satisfy the endless ambitions of some is both disastrous and abhorrent, all it does is display a horrendous lack of understanding and knowledge on the part of people like yourself.
Its because we probably all came here expecting some crazy reverend talking about how these movies and shows were sacrilegious sins against God. And he turned out to be a smart, down to Earth guy with interesting thoughts.
One of the best speakers I have ever witnessed. You explain thing so simply and clearly, using examples to make your points easy to understand. God has given you a magnificent gift Father.
Please don't take this as an attack, father, but I use to take drugs, and when I watch some of the motions that your mouth make, it looks like you are on some kind of stimulant. Seriously, no disrespect, are you on any kind of antidepressants or anything? Strong cofee?
@wordonfirevideo Gosh, anastasisariel sounds gay! Wow, in the midst of serious discussion and conversation, something funny pops out! A comedy of sorts, huh! he he he! Talk about missing the point! Peace everyone.
I think, in mine opinion, what Fr. Barron is doing is teaching through parables, in a sense. He uses movies and in this case a mini-series as modern parables to explain various things about Christ, Christianity and the Church.
I quite like his approach, because using these modern tales makes it easier for modern people to understand certain things.
Thats your opinion but at least your not like most atheists who wouldn't even listen to Father Barron your open minded its good you can listen to others opinion.
I operate on the theory that if there is 'god' then he'd prefer us to do what we think just for its own sake, not simply upon orders or for fear of cosmic retribution.
True enough, but we human beings, in regard to God, are a bit like children or adolescents. Sometimes we do need to be ordered around or threatened with punishment. That's how St. Irenaeus read the Biblical revelation, by the way. But you're right: the ultimate goal is to become, as Jesus put it, God's friends.
Thanks for the public service. Wouldn't it be so much better if everyone just sat in the corner of their rooms and felt guilty for committing the evil act of being human?

Humans don't need to ordered around.
There are many Religous and Atheist people with good morals who live moral lives.
Unfortunatly there's a lot of immoral Religous and Atheist people as well.
Anyway the Padre seems quite intelligent and he understands the shows characters quite well but WHY DOES HE HAVE TO GO ALL RELIGOUS ON US?
lol

This man is obviously a genius, surely if such thing as a god existed he would have us exalt such men for their superior bearing.
