  • Work, great. music, unbelievably awful. Even at the lowest volume this music choice tore away at my ability to enjoy the imagery. I have been an editor for 2 decades and this is an error I see so often with demo reels: A random piece of music dropped over a visual showcase. In this case, not only is it a very sensory demanding piece of auditory accompaniment, but it runs at a COMPLETELY different pace than the visuals. I see others have commented on this, so you probably get the message.

  • @ScottBarrett I wrote the music to go with Eugenes demo reel. All the demo reels he had shown me (at the time) had the most mundane, lifeless, regurgitated songs Ive ever heard in my entire life. Completely uninspiring. I "tried" to write something that actually brought out the depth of the artwork and capabilities that Eugene has to offer and to hear that its just "awful" and "random" really confuses me. I would love for you to pick another piece of music that would be more fitting.

  • @thunderheart530 Sorry to go all Simon Cowell on you, Eugene, but I stand by what I said. Allow me to elaborate though, if you are seeking improvement. This reel has a single function - to give a potential employer the feeling that airbrushIvanov has a sufficient skill level to meet or exceed the demand of whatever task they need him for. The most important aspect of the reel is therefore to show the work in a manner that the employer can make such a determination. ....

  • ...An effective way to do that (despite pixar's "just the facts" submission policy) is to excite the audience as they are watching - if for no other reason than to keep them engaged long enough to show everything you feel you want to show. While I got the sense that airbrushIvanov had technical CG skills, it was difficult to take in while that music punched me in the face. In short, the music itself was not necessarily bad, it was just ill-suited for this reel. ....

  • When you wrote this music, did you have the edit in front of you? Did you make this piece with the pace of the reel in mind? If so, I'm afraid you completely failed. You VASTLY overshadowed the pace with your music. Of course the edit could have easily have been sped up by 4X while conveying the same information. CG artists do not make the best editors. At least this one sure doesn't. Take a look at a reel I cut for our CG guy. Hope it helps:

  • @ScottBarrett (BTW, I had misread, thunderheart530 - you did the music for Eugene's reel but you're not Eugene. got it.)

  • @ScottBarrett That makes a lot more since. I definitely wanted to make it more of an experience rather then just slapping some random track over the imagery but it seems the point of the music in this particular situation is to do just that.

  • Good modelling bit like some of the others that jittering at the start and the overbearing music lost it for me. If I was hiring woyld have stopped this before the end and gone to the next. That would be a shame as the talent is obviously there.

  • That was awesome!

  • Great portfolio, terrible music. You have to understand the music is VERY personal... each person viewing your reel is going to have different tastes and if you do anything to chase people away its not a good thing.

  • @TorQueMoD agreed, I had to mute it to watch it, a lot of employers say to not put music in and if you do make it very low key, not raging metal or whatever that was

  • I have seen a few demo reels in my time, its good work, not perfect, but I was really thrown off mid way or so with the music, I ended up muting it (Change in sounds levels), so make sure the next one is evened out a little, but Good work :)

  • 2 people completely did not have any taste art. they should be shot!

  • Also, put important information on the bottom of every shot. Poly counts programs used etc. If you textured them, show the different passes, Diffuse,Occ,Epidermis (if you did one), and Specular. Thing is keep it simple keep it short. Most companies look at a demo reel for about 30 seconds before deciding to hire. I have a two year degree in video game design and another in VFX. I am currently working at a VFX Studio in California. So i know what I am talking about not just some random guy lol.

  • @kcin228 thanks for the input, I really appreciate it. Add me on msn if it's not too much trouble; I'm making my 2011 demo pretty soon and I'd love to get some more direction for a polished, industry ready demo.

    Thanks

    Eugene

  • @kcin228 lol forgot to put my info: aleuus@live.com for msn and victorkrylov1 for skype... talk to you soon ;)

  • Your demo reel needs a bit of work. Cut the entire intro just put a card with basic bold arial font, with your name, phone number, and e-mail address. Put this card at the beginning and end. Put your best three works at the beginning, middle, and end. Your demo reel shouldn't be over a 1 minute 30 seconds long. Show wiresframes of all your models. Good models don't matter if they can't be animated easily. Do these things you will have a professional demo reel that will land you a job.

  • Great modeling skills dude!!!
