just to clarify things, Alfrien is still alive on an island off lith harbor, its just that if you played an evan they explain, that the pact of human and onyx dragon is sacred and can not be broken even after death, The above picture happened somewhere after Freud hid The last onyx dragon egg, and then died due to his horrible wounds, with Freud dead, Alfrien could no longer use his powers, so he pretty much became useless, so thats why he decided to go alone on an island.
And I think Freud and Afrien are just spending some time together, mourning the loss of the Onyx Dragons just as showed when your Evan character finds Afrien at the island.

Afrien is still not dead. He is just almost asleep. On Evan last quest, it got say untill what happen to Afrien why he would end up in the turtle-island. He sacrificed himself and get curse from the black mage which is - Forever sleep at the Turtle island. Then Freud then cast the spell on that place, he froze Afrien in a ice, to protect him, next, his another spell is 'only the next dragon master could unfroze it, and awaken Afrien' So, afrien did not dead. :)
@skycombat if youve played a level 70 evan, you get a quest where you must travel to the spot where afrien froze at (which also happens to be the spot where mercedes is first controlled by the player, but frozen over). Afrien never died, he just sacrificed himself with the curse to protect Freud, where Afrien took the same fate as Aran and Mercedes. Afrien talks to Evan telepathically, while hes frozen over, which means Afrien can talk to Mercedes telepathically as well.

@batmanninjafilms It's called Demon Slayer. He was a member of the Black Wings, but he defected and joined the Resistance. Also, he comes out 'after' Mercedes and Cannoneer.

@XDTails Yeah, I realised. Apparently, in KMS, Afrien's body is covered with ice, meaning that Black Mage's spell already reached him.
