You get into recovery mode on a phat with Custom Firm Ware the same way. The Slims just have lighter materials, and more up to date firmwares installed.

if you can't get into recovery mod you are on sony firmaware this only works on custom firmware e.g. 5.00m33-3

(to get into recovery mode turn of psp the hold r and turn on)
