I found Genki to be straight forward and fair in the introduction to Japanese Language learning. The interesting thing is An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese (AKA Genki 3) was written before Genki. I'm not sure if was just 2 or all 4 of the authors of Genki were actually students of the Authors of the Intermediate Book. So that is why some of the lessons in Genki are repeated in the Intermediate Book. P.S. Mary, Robert, Takeshi, Prof. Yamashita & the rest are in Genki 3, lol :D
げんき Books have (according to my teacher) another disadvantage. There's too much english translation inside, so that Japanese mixes with English which is bad indeed, because both languages are 100% different. I believe that you'd better buy a textbook which is in Japanese ONLY. In that way, you learn to analyse the text without depending on any translation. Well, if you're a self-study student then (I don't wanna disappoint you of course), you'll probably never master Japanese..
hey I've been studying with this series for more han 6 months and I'm currently taking lesson 20... do u think this books is a great basis? or I should start with another series after I fhinish this?
To all that reads: Im planning on starting up this channel to teach Japanese going through pretty much all aspects of the "Genki" textbooks. If you are thinking about learning but dont have any teaching methods i suggest you subscribe and stay tuned for upcoming information on my Channel.
@cpp1977 I think after BOTH of Genki 1 & 2, probably the lowest level if that. One may even pass the JLPT3 Test after learning the Intermediate Japanese Book (AKA Genki 3). But this is only if you really work hard or get A's in a class. Genki is only a guide though, as is any textbook, the JLPT should not be associated with a hierarchy of textbooks and stand on their own in their tests.
hey richard, i found this really cool websight that gives the hirigana, katakana, kanji, and multiple sentence examples for those who wish to learn this stuff. i am not with them, just thought that it was a good sight... later bro,
These books are used at the danish copenhagen business school, so they are very professional. if you're serious about studying japanese, these are the books to get!
Also "Japanese for Dummies" is a good book to start out with. Though the romanji used in that book is incorrect, it explains different guidelines very good
@susumulover She is! She's also apparently taller than buildings, too. And why the hell did she stand up Takeshi? That whore. No wonder she wasn't invited to that picnic.
@sunflip123 Sure we ship to New Zealand. Shipping is the same as elsewhere $12.80 USD for 1-3 normal sized books (usually). However, I am not sure about the conversion to NZ currency. You may want to call your credit card company to ask.
@becca0668 Yes, certainly. Priority Mail international is currently $12.80 for a flat rate envelope. One $12.80 envelope can safely hold 2-3 normal sized books. BTW, Genki came out with a revised edition. I need to make a video on that! :)
@palui123 Yes, indeed. They are made for the beginner. However, you may want to learn hiragana before starting (it only covers kana briefly, I believe)
@thejapanshop there's a chart of hiragana in the textbook that you can study, also the workbook has sections to practice writing the characters. I'm using the two for my Japanese class at the university I'm attending.
@palui123 It is a VERY great book to learn from. It DOES vocer Hiragana/ Katakana/ Kanji, but some of the sentence structures aren't as coloquial as you'd think. If you get it, make sure to use the CD (if you buy it) or go to the book's website and use the online CD because it REALLY makes a difference. Enjoy!! =D
These books are really good. I never got the answer key because these were the books that were mandatory for my Japanese class. I learned a lot in those classes. I will be taking more Japanese classes next semester. I thought the prices were reasonable since we used the books more than just one semester.

After finishing the two books, what level of the JLPT could one pass?

how much are they?

I don't think that these books are really that expensive - at least compared to a lot of my other books for college.
You can just type in Genki CD in google and there is a website that has all the audios for Genki I and II.
