What they were intending to build was a rifle that was reliable under many different conditions above pinpoint accuracy. The M4 family is actually pretty reliable. The H&K 416 is just as reliable as the AK family because the H&K 416 uses a gas-piston setup that the M16/M4 doesn't have. Also, the AK family is cheap in cost compared to the M16/M4 style rifles.
In reality, it was Emil who suffered from Epilepsy, so the Phenobarbital was most likely his..... the movie keeps trying to make Larry the dominant personality but who knows.....
