THAT HAWK DID NOT KILL THAT PIGEON. IT HAS RIGAMORTIS WHICH MEANS THE PIGEON HAS BEEN DEAD FOR QUITE SOME TIME BEFORE THE HAWK FOUND IT. TOTAL SET UP.
Theres some confusion.First of all, euro sparrowhawks are accipiters(short-winged hawks).Kestrels(commonly called sparrowhawks) are of the falcon family(long wings)with color variations from euro to USA.They are totaly different. Pigeon Hawks are Merlins, also falcons(long wings). America's Sharp shinned and Coopers are also accipiters. Both countries have Goshawks(accipiters) with some structural differences. Euros have huge feet! All first year birds look alot alike with some differences.
@KuroHyo Totally true. Sounds like you might be a falconer. We notice things like that! First year birds seem not to give a hoot about what they break or where they chase game into. In their second year, and there afterwards, they become more proficient in their hunting methods and not so much of a "To Hell with caution, Catch it at ALL Costs" attitude. Accipiters are truly a total trip to watch. l saw a female Passage coops chase a sparrow around a bush 3 times in about 2 seconds. Blew my mind.
@guahould, nope Sharp Shinned Hawks only live in North America, this was filmed in the United Kingdom. Sparrow Hawks and Sharp Shined Hawks are related.
firstly, coopers & sparrow hawkes although are of the same genus there different species, we dont have coopers here in the uk. secondly thats a female sparrow hawk, males are smaller & would struggle with a pigeon sized bird.
Yeah I believe that's a coopers hawk. Sparrowhawk's/ Kestrel's have two stripes on each side of their head, one coming down from under their eye and one coming down from behind their eye.
the pigion does seem a bit stiff for a fresh kill,so i guess a pet hawk, juvanile female sparrowhawk still has green eyes approx 10 month old if this was filmed in march.
@UnionProduction Nice try but totally backwards. The male Kestrel (a long-winged falcon) is the colorful one with slate blue wings with a rufus (rust colored)back. Look it up. They're different. USA birds have some variation of color from Euro birds. Where the confusion comes in is because Kestrel's are commonly called "Sparrow Hawks". In reality, true "Sparrowhawks" are TOTALLY different birds. They are "Accipiters". Better know as Short Winged hawks. Hope this helps out. Cheers
@tailfeatherz You ought to be a nice person and open you coupe door. Hawks got to eat too! Besides, that's why God made pigeons, to feed hawks and falcons. Yummmmm!!!
Nature is nature. Deal with it. I hunt with a pair of these little falcons. Sparrowhawks, aka Kestrel's, aren't hawks at all, their small member of the falcon family. They also help keep birds away from the local air ports run ways. Before you kill one, the fine will be $5000, it a protected bird of prey just like Eagles, Owls, Hawks and Falcons.
@111chazz Ya know, I noticed that too. Pretty stiff for a "fresh caught bird". Whats this guy feeding this bird anyway. At least he could provide a nice "warm" and "fresh" meal.
the other day one of these hawks chased a starling into my patio doors and the bang was well loud n shit me up I have never seen one up close in real life n this starling ran under the garden furniture n the hawk went walking in after him right up by the house evil thing I was banging on the window n it didn't seem to care then this cat came from nowhere rushed the hawk that managed to get out just after a bit of a scrap the starling escaped too well random but one lucky starling.
pretty sure that is not a kestrel but i know there are a few types of kestrel but none of them get that large (male or female) so therefore it is not a sparrowhawk i have an american kestrel at my work and i know what they look like.
The correct indentification is juvenile Eurasian Sparrowhawk.
And, it is very likely that the bird caught th pigeon itself. All animals only go stiff for a short amount of time, and pretty quickly after death too. Also against the idea the bird found the pigeon- I have never heard of one feeding on a dead bird it has found.
hmm..does look a bit stockier like a Gos but most likely a Spar. How can you say Spars are the reason that songbirds are getting rarer, that is domestic cats and people.
The sparrowhawk didn't kill that pigeon, it was already dead or was thrown out. The pigeon is as stiff as a board, a fresh killed pigeon wouldn't be stiff. Looks like a staged video!
it is a female sparrowhawk!we get goshawks here aswel but this is defo a spar!-shoot em all anyway-all they do is wipe out song birds and weve none left as it is.
funny thing is that i doubt that from your posts on the eating dove alive vid you havent figured out that its acctually pigeons that kill off songbirds, they eat all the food in the area and have so many babies that they just out-compete, and they are what ends up attracting the hawks.
sparrow hawks only do well in areas where there are plenty of small birds. where there are none, the sparrow hawks cant live.. sparrow hawks are not to blame for your lack of small birds in the area... more likely its cats and people who think its a good idea to shoot things that are the problem
I'm gonna have to go out on a limb here and say...I don't think the pigeon made it...!!!
