The shocking moment when I click the link after thinking there was 558,904,000 views. YouTube music choice is shit. Irish artists are better not only because of their voices, but the effort, passion, morals, etc. that they invert in their songs. And that one ingredient nobody can explain.

@irkofan IM sorry, but the fact that youv brought up all that technical shite shows that you DONT know what your talkin bout!! The rawness, the realness, combined with outrageous talent is why he was the best. Its very arrogant to decide that theres only one way to sing well
Im not gonna rehash all the other reasons, just have a look at comments on his other songs. He is revered as THE folk singer in Ireland. Maybe u should go and listen to the High Kings, wont find a hint of "oversinging" there
@tony10396861 It's not technical to say that his voice is hard to listen to because of the dropouts in the tone. You tell me that it's very arrogant to decide that there is only one way to sing, but yer acting like Kelly's the end all be all of singing. Aren't you doing the same thing? I hate the High Kings . . . don't get me started, and don't insult my taste. I'm just being objective in saying that everyone has their flaws--and despite his flaws, Luke's still one of the greats.
@irkofan Im not saying he was always perfect, ive seen some performances where he was far from his best in the late 70s/early 80s just befor and while he was sick..Is that what youre talking about? But you cant call this performance anything other than spectacular, no "dropouts in tone" here..Have you listened to his recordings from early 60s? Not that theyre neccesarily better, but he tended to "oversing" less when he was younger..Glad to hear u hate high kings, at least we can agree on that :)
@tony10396861 Now you're getting at what I was trying to say. Maybe I was too aggressive about what I was trying to convey to you. (I have a habit of being a bit cranky . . . and I come off as downright angry, sometimes. Sorry if I did.) I have heard his performances from the 60's--beautiful, raw, unbridled talent there. I know that he lost a lot of his tone and power as he grew sick (and from what I understand, he got a bit burned out on the material). High Kings, Celtic Woman . . . yuck.
@irkofan And im sorry if i came across as arrogant.....no doubt thats true, he ran out of steam a bit with the dubs.Christy Moore once said that Luke felt "trapped", that he couldnt sing as he wanted to because of obligations to the group... still pulled a few amazing performances out of the bag though; Raglan Road was only first recorded at that stage, and then theres that incredible version of song for ireland weeks before he died, when he kept falling asleep in the studio
@tony10396861 Ah well, no harm done over a disagreement. Song for Ireland . . . good gracious, he was amazing on that tune. Personally, I'm more of a Ronnie Drew gal, but I'll not get into that. I know Miss O'Neill's views on him! Hahaha
I am American with Irish roots. None of my family has seen Ireland since my grandpa Hogan left during the potato famine to become a farmer in western Maine. I want to return. Are there jobs? Should I learn Irish? Do you hate Americans? What towns or areas have low crime? Where is the most culture? if anyone is listening please help me out.
So, there's Luke Kelly, Jim McCann and John Sheahan, but does anybody know who the other people are? Just studio musicians? Kelly addresses one of them as "Bessie", I think. Anyway, they're doing a marvellous job accompanying him.
what an inspiration to all our young. luke was for the people with the songs he gave us. class act. class man. should be a memory of true ireland and the courage and personality of its people, not the cowens ,kennys healy_rays and all other political gobshites that have blackened our countries hearts and souls.david mc`williams, micheal o`leary, dermot desmond, michael smurfit etc shame on you for letting these amadans think they can ruin this nation
Away from home for the last 20 months and being able to listen to Luke eases the pain a bit...I promise that my kids will grow up as proud Irish people...Very bitter for what the bankers and politicans have done to my family,,,,miss my parents and they are missing their grandchildren growing up....
@KeithGreville Use Skype to keep in touch! The gas thing about this whole situation we Irish find ourselves in, is that we take it like drugged zoombies...we are too tolerant of what the bankers and politicans have done. The greeks riot on the streets in protest. What do we do?...we get pissed. Lovely.
@KeithGreville i feel your pain keith,3 years gone myself in a strange way you become more irish when your not at home,no matter how long your gone its always going to be home, best of luck to your family:)
@KeithGreville thats a stupid comment keep killin people that are not the same believe as you?? fook england and there queen?? enough!why dont u come back and do something???? there is enough dead now to realise hate only encourages more hate
@KeithGreville Sad to hear you had to leave cause of the pox bottle bankers and politicans here. But dont worrie, cause someday you will return with your kids, a very proud man. Slan a cara
Look how 'Lukie' gets into the song notably when he brushes his hand through his hair..he resigns himself completely to the next few minutes.....living the lyrics. No one comes near..
ah luke to have the voice of ireland you are and always will be the greatest ,others pretend , us wise enough to know have no doubt and thanks to kelly o,neill he lives long in our thoughts never far behind our greatest moments in our lives, be proud of our culture our music our irishness and luke is a gift from above.thanx miss o,neill your a star too..
This I heard on the Dubliners album "revolution". I have spent many years working with mentally retarded people and I can say, understanding their simplicity is a gate to understanding humanity. Having a retarded child does make one love them all the more and makes one a better person.
Luke sings it so beautifully as does Sinnead o Connor.Great song and I hope Phil Coulter has grown mentally with having such a child.
I am so happy that a very wonderful friend asked me to hear this song. I have to listen to it over and over, loved his voice, the feeling he puts in the song, the lyrics. Thanks Liam
@TroyDouglas917 wat do ya mean 'he hasnt got a greatest voice', are u deaf or something, luke kelly is possibly de greatest voice in de history of irish music. ps get ur ears tested cause they aint workin properly and as for comparing him to dat xfactor nonsense, wat can i say i think i'm in a state of shock here
@2hughie2 While I agree with you wholeheartedly, Luke is not the greatest voice in the history of Irish music....He is the greatest voice in the history of ALL music :)
@kellyoneill What a ridiculous statement haha...he has an original voice that can't be compared to anybody else but he is certainly not the best...I can think of 25 singers off the top of my head that would be recognized as a better singer
@Andylee7920 some one being or somethink being the best is a matter of opinion and always will be. however luke can convey a feeling be it remorse, happyness or just plain emotion like NO other singer
true their are some very good singers like sinatra and others but for raw tallent no others better luke
@kellyoneill@kellyoneill What a ridiculous statement haha...he has an original voice that can't be compared to anybody else but he is certainly not the best...I can think of 25 singers off the top of my head that would be recognized as a better singer

Im not gonna rehash all the other reasons, just have a look at comments on his other songs. He is revered as THE folk singer in Ireland. Maybe u should go and listen to the High Kings, wont find a hint of "oversinging" there
tony10396861 10 months ago
@tony10396861 It's not technical to say that his voice is hard to listen to because of the dropouts in the tone. You tell me that it's very arrogant to decide that there is only one way to sing, but yer acting like Kelly's the end all be all of singing. Aren't you doing the same thing? I hate the High Kings . . . don't get me started, and don't insult my taste. I'm just being objective in saying that everyone has their flaws--and despite his flaws, Luke's still one of the greats.
irkofan 10 months ago
@irkofan Im not saying he was always perfect, ive seen some performances where he was far from his best in the late 70s/early 80s just befor and while he was sick..Is that what youre talking about? But you cant call this performance anything other than spectacular, no "dropouts in tone" here..Have you listened to his recordings from early 60s? Not that theyre neccesarily better, but he tended to "oversing" less when he was younger..Glad to hear u hate high kings, at least we can agree on that :)
tony10396861 10 months ago
@tony10396861 Now you're getting at what I was trying to say. Maybe I was too aggressive about what I was trying to convey to you. (I have a habit of being a bit cranky . . . and I come off as downright angry, sometimes. Sorry if I did.) I have heard his performances from the 60's--beautiful, raw, unbridled talent there. I know that he lost a lot of his tone and power as he grew sick (and from what I understand, he got a bit burned out on the material). High Kings, Celtic Woman . . . yuck.
irkofan 10 months ago
@irkofan And im sorry if i came across as arrogant.....no doubt thats true, he ran out of steam a bit with the dubs.Christy Moore once said that Luke felt "trapped", that he couldnt sing as he wanted to because of obligations to the group... still pulled a few amazing performances out of the bag though; Raglan Road was only first recorded at that stage, and then theres that incredible version of song for ireland weeks before he died, when he kept falling asleep in the studio
tony10396861 10 months ago
@tony10396861 Ah well, no harm done over a disagreement. Song for Ireland . . . good gracious, he was amazing on that tune. Personally, I'm more of a Ronnie Drew gal, but I'll not get into that. I know Miss O'Neill's views on him! Hahaha
irkofan 10 months ago
@irkofan I love Ronnie and all the Dubs too, Luke will always be my favourite though :)

Away from home for the last 20 months and being able to listen to Luke eases the pain a bit...I promise that my kids will grow up as proud Irish people...Very bitter for what the bankers and politicans have done to my family,,,,miss my parents and they are missing their grandchildren growing up....
Never stop fighting.....thank you Luke...

Lovely.

Look how 'Lukie' gets into the song notably when he brushes his hand through his hair..he resigns himself completely to the next few minutes.....living the lyrics. No one comes near..

2hughie2 1 year ago 58
@2hughie2 While I agree with you wholeheartedly, Luke is not the greatest voice in the history of Irish music....He is the greatest voice in the history of ALL music :)
kellyoneill 1 year ago 35
@kellyoneill What a ridiculous statement haha...he has an original voice that can't be compared to anybody else but he is certainly not the best...I can think of 25 singers off the top of my head that would be recognized as a better singer
Andylee7920 1 year ago
@Andylee7920 some one being or somethink being the best is a matter of opinion and always will be. however luke can convey a feeling be it remorse, happyness or just plain emotion like NO other singer
true their are some very good singers like sinatra and others but for raw tallent no others better luke
