My dad has a 1978 mercury 20hp motor and it stopped working...

He took it to a shop and they told him he needs a new stator...which is difficult to find.

help i got a 72 and when i wot it slows down and then fast slow fast and i need help whats wrong its smokey and i have a plastic gas can. could it be water in the fuel or no fuel getting to the motor or not enough oil in fuel

Do you know anywhere on the web that I'd be able to find or buy a workshop manual for this model? There's something wrong with the gearbox on mine and I have no idea how to get to it!

thats not a 1977 unless you have the hood of a 72/73 on it even then, the hood will not fit.... that engine is not a 77 i dont care what warranty card says its either a 72 or a 73 only years that made that style hood with the blue band

That's the cowling from a 73

Only way to confirm is to check the serial # which is located on the middle section, under the choke knob.

Thanks for the compliment. It is actually a 1977 as I got the book with it and warranty card with it when I got it.

Hi the 72 is identical but Keikhaefer not Marine on te faceplate.
