@johneymute I don't think so. The Super FX2 chip is very impressive for what it is and it runs at up to 21MHz but remember the 32X has dual 32-bit RISC processors in it each at 23MHz. Even if the SFX2 was as good as one of them it could'n't match the two of them paired up.
@MN12BIRD I don't now why so many people bash on this version of Doom. Sure it runs pretty slow but it isn't any slower than the 3DO version. It has great music but most people says that the music is horrible. The controller lag is very easy to get use to. Many ignore the Super Nintendo's limitation, literally thinking that this version shouldn't have any flaws. I still like this port of Doom and I understand it's shortcomings unlike other people.
@PenguinmanN64 Yeah from what I remember seeing the 3DO and Saturn version look REALLY slow. This one's playable once you get used to the lag. It's true you do get used to it after awhile and then you start controlling better. I love the music in the SNES version personally. It's not perfect but it beats listening to the 32X music! It's very impressive they got this running on the SNES even with the Super FX2 chip it was a miracle and I was amazed by it back in the day.
I was going to mention that thing about the enemy only having 1 direction, but I see you noticed already. All and all I think they did a good job in this port.
@Standard420247 Yeah I dunno if it's tied into the SNES CPU base clock cause I think the Super FX chip got it's clock speed off the SNES through the extra contacts in the cart slot. It certainly could run faster with the SFX2 chip cause Starfox is a little slow for sure.
I wonder if starfox had the fx2 chip, would it have been much faster... I mean you play the game on a emulator it flies but the game on the cart is slow as all hell and choppy as shit
I like the SNES version of doom, but all of the sound effects sound like the PC version sound effects travelling through a wall in a 2-part condominium....
more levels including all secret and boss levels and still playable with a total 22lvls while the 32x version suffers for lack of levels (16) and music that rapes your ears HARD
The SNES was able to do this game wiith better sound and no shitty $150 dollar add on.
Nintendo does what Sega was too dumb to do.
What Sega Should have done, was make it a port for the Sega CD because it had a chipset and programming similar to Mode 7 on the SNES which would have made it a better port than the SNES.
@xDaXAFImoshmonkey The SegaCD scaling hardware could never pull off Doom. Wolf3D maybe but not doom. Don't forget the SNES isn't really running Doom on it's own the Super FX2 chip in the Doom cartridge is doing most of the heavy processing and that chip was why this game had a much higher price tag than most other SNES games at the time. Also Doom on the 32X has MUCH better graphics, textures on the roof and floors and runs at a much smoother frame rate too. So it was a trade off.
@xDaXAFImoshmonkey You are about 15 years behind the times for fanboyism on this game calling out some dumb shit like nintendo does what sega was too dumb to do..... So there is no HEY GUYS LOOK AT IT THIS WAY.... There's only HEY GUYS xDaXAFImoshmonkey is either a retard or a teen.
@Zenex666 I'm 22 and just getting into retro gaming and I did jump the gun when trying to say that the 32x sucked, it's actually pretty cool however, I was just continuing my argument buy calling it shitty because mine pretty much killed the battery in 4 of my games. I was upset about it at the time of my last reply, I hope to get another one soon but I just imported a FDS and Famicom lol.
Doom began for me on the sony playstation. I loved this game and hell i still do then.
I then got Final Doom for the Playstation which was sweet too followed by getting the Gameboy Advance version and then the bonus versions on the XBOX version on DOOM 3.
I also have this on the 360 live arcade which is an amazing port, have to get it for the multiplayer.
Today ive put a bid in the Snes version on ebay, can't wait to get it !
Ironically ive never played the PC version. I need too.
snes doom feels so lame,it misses everything wich makes the game so fun.

i can,t see why most peoples prefer this version duo the extra levels, bosses and better music,i 'm a snes fan and in retrospect i would say it,s impressive but it misses all the fun from the 32x version!!!
That's if you're using an OS newer then Windows 98se, and Windows ME. The original DOOM was made for PC's, and it's a DOS game. You can still play it on a PC no matter what. Using a source port, or DOSBox.
I only wish the Saturn had the original music, also, the SNES and the Saturn version seem to run about the same FPS, idk, the Saturn should have ran that like the PC did.

that is your opinion i dont care about no floor textures or the lag or the pixelation put them together and i just didnt have much fun atleast its better than the 3do though =P
DooM takes place in the future, Humans live on mars, open a portal to Hell and demons and zombies are the enemies. Nothing like Wolf3D. The game has lots of blood and demonic references (six pointed star?) along with some extras like a guys head on a pole and nice stuff like that. Most of the really gory stuff like that was taken out of most of the console versions.
There was another guy who reviewed this game and didn't do it fairly because he was judging it by the same standards as the versions for more powerful systems. You should have said how it was the only early version of Doom released for a general consumer console and not one of the expensive uber-systems.
your wrong about amount of levels in the snes it has all 4 episodes but levels where taken out from each one the 32x has 3 complete episodes i think the snes has about 3 more levels
i played this. pretty weak compared to the pc version but considering that incredible lack of memory and cpu performance on the snes, they did a great job.
Saturn Doom also was Jaguar Doom-derived. SNES Doom was the only contemporary version with the PC version levels instead of the simplified Jaguar ones. Later on the Xbox (Doom 3) and Xbox 360 (XBLA) would be perfect PC ports, but of the older ports, the SNES is the only one with the original levels. Map screen between levels too.
Amazing port too, really. Sure it's slow, but it's perfectly playable. And it has great music. The main problem is the pixelized graphics, but you get used to it.
As far as I know the second level in the SNES version of DOOM isn't the full level. It's cut short. Not sure if any of the other levels were cut short, just thought I'd let you know though.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island believe it or not does. I haven't seen that game in so long I couldn't even remember why it needed to use this chip. It must have had some fancy effects in some levels?
It was the same 21 MHz as DOOM (SFX-2 chip). Actually the SFX-1 had an internal clock speed of 21 MHz as well, but was halved by an external clock devider and had fewer pins.
Yoshi's Island used the chip for advanced 2D effects like scaling sprites and very large sprites (taking up the whole screen) used for many boss battles.
Haxor! 200 life lol? I have this. Ths SNES was way before my time, this game was realeased the year I was born, but now that I have one this was one of the first games I ordered off ebay. I love it. Good review, you did it justice.
my only complaint about it was the fact that it didn't have any save feature. I remember leaving the snes on for hours so I could go eat and then continue playing.
Also the dancing gun will drive you crazy if you play the game for a extended period
This version hasn't got all the levels from the pc version, only has five more levels than the 32X. Also did you notice that the engine of this game makes you walk right in the middle of items to pick them up? If you're a player used to the pc version, sometimes you think you've pick up an item as you tuched the border and you don't, it can get pretty annoying. Still, this version deserves some credit since it's running on a 16bit console.
lol now that you mention it when I was making this video and I get the shotgun on Level 1 I thought I picked it up the first time and was like WTF I was almost right over it but then I had to back up over it. It is kinda more picky that way now that you mention it.
its slower when you play it. Sometimes too when you record video it only appears to be less choppy because the frames are blended together. Its choppy when you see it straight of the SNES on your TV and its controls are laggy making it harder to control.
this is one of my most hated ports of this game it has a good framerate and good music but it was really glitchy you could get stuck into the walls and enemies were always looking at you
Compared to the 3do version this runs pretty good, 3do had an even smaller screen and a pretty low framerate, but at least the music on it was realy good(best maybe).
Sound quality is still amazing for Super Nintendo!

the 32x version had poor music but whay and more sound effects.
the snes versioon had better music but weird and way less sound effects.
the snes version has the original textures and colors but lacks textures on flours & ceilings.
the 32x version has textures all over the place but they,re different and in different colors.
the 32x has more speed & instant control response whereas the snes version has poor speed & control response.
but i wonder is the superfx2 compareble with the 32x chip?

5. Nightmare difficulty isn't like on PC. On SNES enemies won't respawn but their speed and damage will be extremely high.
6. Enemies are weaker. On PC cyberdemon takes 50 rockets or 3 BFG shot. On SNES he die after 3 or 5 rockets.
Overall i love this port too its actually this port that started me playing Doom. Despite its flaw it remain one of my favorite port oddly.
Archvile78 2 years ago
Other stuff to notice:
1. Even if there's no floor texture, toxic waste pit should have been green colored at least but on they remain black.
2. You cannot kill 2 enemies at once with the shotgun even if they are one behind each others.
3. You cannot circle strafe which makes it hard sometime.
4. You cannot play every on every difficulty. Shore of hell is available on Hurt me plenty. Ultra violence allow inferno.
Archvile78 2 years ago
this brings up the question, would Doom have been possible on a stock Mega Drive/Genesis, even with an enhancement chip like the SVP chip?

what other games used the SuperFX2 chip
JarrodDrover123 3 years ago
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island believe it or not does. I haven't seen that game in so long I couldn't even remember why it needed to use this chip. It must have had some fancy effects in some levels?
MN12BIRD 3 years ago
how many MHz did the FX chip have in yoshis island?
kougerman22 3 years ago
It was the same 21 MHz as DOOM (SFX-2 chip). Actually the SFX-1 had an internal clock speed of 21 MHz as well, but was halved by an external clock devider and had fewer pins.
Yoshi's Island used the chip for advanced 2D effects like scaling sprites and very large sprites (taking up the whole screen) used for many boss battles.

Haxor! 200 life lol? I have this. Ths SNES was way before my time, this game was realeased the year I was born, but now that I have one this was one of the first games I ordered off ebay. I love it. Good review, you did it justice.

if doom was on a 32 megabit cartridge it would've been even better. but this is still very good for a 16 megabit cartridge
jcarlson09 3 years ago
the snes always had good music
jcarlson09 3 years ago
my only complaint about it was the fact that it didn't have any save feature. I remember leaving the snes on for hours so I could go eat and then continue playing.
Also the dancing gun will drive you crazy if you play the game for a extended period

this and your 32x doom video are my favorite ones from you
jcarlson09 3 years ago
This version hasn't got all the levels from the pc version, only has five more levels than the 32X. Also did you notice that the engine of this game makes you walk right in the middle of items to pick them up? If you're a player used to the pc version, sometimes you think you've pick up an item as you tuched the border and you don't, it can get pretty annoying. Still, this version deserves some credit since it's running on a 16bit console.
Mundolego 3 years ago
lol now that you mention it when I was making this video and I get the shotgun on Level 1 I thought I picked it up the first time and was like WTF I was almost right over it but then I had to back up over it. It is kinda more picky that way now that you mention it.

I think it was an ok port, but it arrived a year plus too late.
thebonefish 3 years ago
dang now I want to get my hands on this port lol
jcarlson09 3 years ago
you forgot to mention the psx port lol
jcarlson09 3 years ago
I think the biggest SNES cartridge was like 6 MegaBytes so that would be what like 48 Megabit. Jaguar had a CD-ROM add-on did it not?
MN12BIRD 3 years ago
Doesn't look slow to me.
FPWDude 3 years ago
its slower when you play it. Sometimes too when you record video it only appears to be less choppy because the frames are blended together. Its choppy when you see it straight of the SNES on your TV and its controls are laggy making it harder to control.

bring back memories, probably your best vid from a nolstalgic standpoint!!!!!!!!!

How would you compare all the console versions of Doom against each other? Like the SNES, 3D0, Jaguar, 32X, Saturn, Playstation & N64.
DeanoTheLegend87 3 years ago
N64 Doom is a sequel really, not a remake (all new levels)...
As for the rest, the best summary is the one on Gamefaqs. There's an incredibly detailed FAQ listing every single difference between each version.

as always, great review!

this is one of my most hated ports of this game it has a good framerate and good music but it was really glitchy you could get stuck into the walls and enemies were always looking at you
Thepaddster 3 years ago
You think the framerate is good?? Have you played it on the real system or just on an emulator??
MN12BIRD 3 years ago
its ba but not as ba as the Saturn port the framerate is really piss poor on that
Thepaddster 3 years ago
What a twist at 2:10 :D

That's how it runs on zsnes for me.
BigUnitDJ 3 years ago
it runs smoother on ZSNES for me I found it easier to control on ZSNES too.

i had the computer version and i was hooked on it when i was a kid.

What about the Saturn version?
richie1438 3 years ago
Compared to the 3do version this runs pretty good, 3do had an even smaller screen and a pretty low framerate, but at least the music on it was realy good(best maybe).
munxcorp 3 years ago
This version still looks like speedy gonzales compared to most modern fps games.
