I just did the 3 pass shave with my Barbasol shaving cream with aloe, and my Gillette Fusion Proglide razor. Suck an awesome shave :) I have wanted to experience with a double sided razor, shave soap, and a brush though!! Is it much better that way?
@wheely132 , It is a better shave, but with the double edge razor you have to be careful at first, go slowly and gentle. Then as you get used to it, you enjoy it and you get quicker with time.
I'm waiting for my tub of Taylor of Old Bond Street to arrive tomorrow and I can't wait! Have you ever used any of the Truefitt & Hill shave creams and/or balms? They have a fairly cheap sample pack ($19 - I'm in the U.S.) that has their different shave creams, balms, and colognes. Looking forward to see how you like the Edwin Jagger. Great videos! Keep it up!
Would you by any chance have another YouTube account? I know another YouTuber that lives in North Wales.. Sounds just like you.. So on and so forth. And nice shaver you got there :)
@BallisticBrawler , I too have sensitive skin, I found that Taylor of old Bond st for sensitive skin shaving soap, plus try using a Wilkinson Sword razor to start with, which is less severe on the skin. Arko is good too. rinse well and use moistursing cream, plus I shave every other day which helps too, unless I am needing to shave of course. Good luck.
@PaulHFilms I've been working on my straight edge skills the past month and just bought a Merkur 34C but have not tried it yet. I imagine it should be a little easier than the sickle but you make it look ridiculously simple. I know looks are deceiving.
can you also shave without the safety bar? for make those smooth shave lines from your mustache and beard. because then im gonna buy it now from the internet!!
i use the same razor please can you tell me what position do you use for your shave? i use in position 1 for wtg and atg and position 2 for xtg i'm searchin about BBS (i'm begginner with DE RAZOR) my blades are gillette 7 o'clock and souplex
@hokidoki2 , Bonjour, I use position 3 for most of my shaving, I have not used the gillette 7'oclock or souplex blades, but if they are in the Merkur Futur they should do a fine job. Good luck :-)
Hey Paul i extremely love your video, you have inspired me to try myself but i wanted to ask you where i could get the same one you have because i live in the UK aswell. i would highly appreciate if your replied and helped me out about where and how much i can get it for.
@youngsurvivor , Hello, not sure if I replied to you, but I get my arko products from the L7 market which is in Kensington Liverpool. But Steve Faragher sells some on his ebay account. Thanks :-)
My dad wasn't around, and the bastard never shaved anyways, so Paul, you sir have just taught me how to shave wetshave with a DE. Can't believe how fast you made 3 passes.
@saltymilkandcoinz , SO happy its helped you. The speed is just a thing which will come with experience, so go steady and enjoy your shaving, thanks for watching too :-))
I neverr had a father-figure to show me how to shave, but I began growing facial-hair a little sooner than everyone else, so I had this ENORMOUS problem, which I STILL haven't fully figured out yet;
How in heavens name do you shave the area around the laryngeal prominence? I once cut myself there and thought I was going to die! A lot of blood, but no real pain.
@MrVeganbro , Yes many people have that problem, the way I shave that area carefully is to pull the skin that covers the laryngeal to one side then shave it, thus making it safer. Thanks for the comment :-)
I just gotta mention that the people living in the Nordic countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway etc.), and anyone else anywhere who have access to a real Nordic-type sauna, should seriously consider shaving during a sauna bath - that means while sitting in the heat. The slow heat and the extreme moisture in the air means an unimaginable shaving comfort. Add to this a good razor with a good blade, and you´re basically in heaven. Just my tip, which I learnt from grandpa 40 yrs ago... :-)
@IOWPC , Many thanks, no I think the cheap throw away razors are ok for the first shave, then thats it. Buy cheap...pay twice ! A good razor and a good blade along with good shaving soap and method. I found it the best way anyway. And cheaper in the long run. :-)
@IOWPC No, you really can´t get the same effect. When you shave 3 passes with a good blade, it´s a bit like shaving a 1000 passes with a cheap one - and the result is _still_ not as good... You just have to do it the proper way to feel it and appreciate it. :-)
Paul, Thanks for the demo. I have just started shopping for a DE razor, and believe that you have helped me make my choice. After using the various plastic throw-away jobs here in the US, I decided to take the steps to a proper shave. Cheers and a Happy New Year from Pennsylvania.
@BallisticBrawler just give it a try, you can get a wilkinson classic for the cost of ONE cartridge for your proglide.
but in my opinion the use of a brush and soap instead of these "hightech" shaving gels makes more of a difference than the actual shaver.
in my evolution from multiblade shaver and "hightech" gel to DE razor, brush and soap, the brush was the biggest step to achieve a irritation free shave.
Agree with you on the Merkur Futur! Mine arrived yesterday and used it for the first time today and it was excellent. Thanks to you and Stephen i'm happy I bought this DE razor! Oh and Happy New Year!
great shave paul, just a tip...instead of going straight to the towel to wipe your face off, rinse with warm water to wash off remaining cream, and then follow up with a cold rinse to close the pores. Really makes a difference in how your face feels, rinsing with warm water followed by cold water always made my face feel cleaner. But whatever works for you.
@ericacsullivan , Thanks for watching, I hope it helped you decide to get one for your son or not, care has to be taken though at the start of getting one. All the best :-)
Hi Paul. Nice video. One question though.. I noticed you are insanely fast with a safety razor, if I was this fast, I dont think I would have any skin left on my face :), is it the razor or experience?? Also I noticed you make 4-5 passes on the same spot, does this not lead to cuts at all?? Please help, I am fairly new to traditional shaving. Thanks.
@leedenzel , Many thanks, the speed is two things, getting used to the razor and experience. the 4-5 passes are to pick up any bits I may have missed or can feel still there. If I press too hard on the same spot it does make the area sore and tender, so when using the merkur which is heavy, I only use a light grip. Good luck with your shaving. :-)
@heldgop Ah I did not know that. I have never owned an adjustable razor. I am considering getting one. What would you recommend? Futur, vision or progress? I am very new to wet shaving. Thanks.
@leedenzel they are all good razors, just choose the model you like best. i dont think that there are any real differences between these razors in the way they shave.
i bought a cheapo butterfly razor for 5bucks from china as my first DE razor. befor that i used gilette fusion or some other mutiblade system and i hated to spend 3-4€ for a replacement cartrige...
after a couple of shaves with the cheapo razor i knew that a safety razor beats every hyper fusion octo blade crap.
i then went on and bought the futur. the progress is just to light, i prefere a heavy razor. the vison is even bigger, but also more expensive. i also like the sleek and simple design of the futur, it looks awesom :D
Nice video, very helpful to someone just getting started with DE shaving. For years I used a Gillette Fusion with their Fusion Gel; A few months ago my wife got me one of those "Art of Shaving" trial kits, next thing I know I ditched the Fusion and have started with a Merkur 23C- so far so good, but I am still having trouble getting close enough in the neck without burning the skin- I will try your method. I have a Futur on order, soon as I develop better technique I will advance to using it.
@marzzz1 , Glad it helped, this method of shaving does take time to get used to and of course your skin to settle to it, but once it does its well worth it. good luck with the futur. Paul.
@exsigint , Yes still using the Futur and very happy with it.I hope yours arrived and your happy using it . They can take time to get used too, but worth it. Thanks. Paul.
Although I bought an Edwin Jagger, my second choice was this Futur. A Futur is still in my future, for sure. This is an excellent and thorough video, too. Nice technique. Thanks for sharing, Paul!
@munja2111 , no 1 is the smallest setting and is fine, I have just started using setting 4 thinking it may be agressive, but it was fine. Video on its way :-)
@NFCBradyfan12 , I only rinse off with water at the end, as I just showered before also, and the arko shaving soap is very creamy and gives me enough moisture on each pass. Why do you ask?
@NFCBradyfan12 , I do rinse with hot water before and after shaving, that is common sense, I think many people tweek there shaving technique to there own style and what works for them. This method is the best I have known so far, and my skin can be sensitive.
@PaulHFilms lol. That's why you rinse between each passes. You need to rinse off all the soap/cream/pre-shave oil residue there is to apply a new coat. Otherwise, it's a lot like shaving bareskin.
@PaulHFilms How does your skin tolerate such shaving method without rinsing in hot water in between? An alcohol-based aftershave? You're not helping your skin by applying this instead of a non-alcohol aftershave balm. You can mix the two together you know, you get the best of both worlds.
@NFCBradyfan12 , Well all I can say is, this method suits me fine, everyone thinks there way of shaving is the best? Not true really, as skin tolerences are different between people, one way works for one, not for others. I have sensitive skin and this way seems to be just right for me. But thank you for your concern and comments :-)
@dyingfly , yes , the lower the number the gap of the blade reduces more, the higher numbers act sort of like a cut throat razor. Glad you been to Wales :-)
Nice video. I like safetyrazors I use different types and brands. I collect them also! My favorite safetyrazors are the gillette fatboy, the parker 95R and the merkur HD(34c)
@wank0r , yes much better, shaving is also better after a hot shower, then lather up with good soap, use the three pass system as we do, then rinse off, add cologne which will sting sometimes, but it closes the pours on the skin, and then moisturise using the best you can afford. Job done, it does take time to get used too. Many thanks :-)
I gave my Futur away days after I got it. Merkur 38C remains my fave.
