Well it's a completely different language than ours. They learn English as a second language in school because a lot of countries around them speak it, also parts of China used to be ruled by England. We learn Spanish as a second language in school because it has our same Latin roots and Mexico is very close to us.
Most of us don't learn Spanish :P Maybe the border regions... and our language is Germanic in origin, not Latin, though there is Latin and Greek influence.

The kid would respond in English when they spoke to him in Chinese, but they didn't seem to care. One day, I asked the dad if he was teaching the boy to write in Chinese, and he said "Nah, it's tough enough for him to write in English. Besides, he'll never need to read Chinese b/c he'll never live in China."

Chinese ppl like Obama since they are expecting to see changes in US as much as in their home country. Actually a lot of ordinary citizens (more than you know or can imagine) are devoting their life to reform and reshape this country. Many of those who went out of the country are coming back with fresh ideas and great influence. What they need is more time and less monotonic cliche from those who know little about this country and act like a first class citizen of the world.

Lol at the girl who talked about opportunities for people who aren't white skinned. China is probably the most racist place on the planet right now. They idolize white skin, and they despise anyone who is a tiny shade darker than they are, including Obama. They will scold you if you get a tan. This inferiority complex is partly why they resent America so much.

Making children and pets ill with melamine-tainted products was NOT the way to endear China to the USA. Counterfeit products may be a problem of small percentages, given the enormous industrial output of China, but the long-term damage to the national reputation will take years to repair, despite China's success as a global power.
As an ethnocentric nation with a history that can be counted in millennia, China may underestimate such a young (US) tiger.

USNARox, China did do such things, and I'm glad that you did say "China" (as in the govt of China). I just hope that we all keep in mind that the Chinese *people* have even less control over their govt than we have over ours here in the US...and just look at all the shit our govt has done over the past 8 yrs.
You're right about the tainted products (one even killed my mom's beautiful, sweet dog) but I'm not mad at Chinese people, just China (again, I'm glad you made the distinction). Peace :)

Hey Bratfink74; yes of course the Chinese Government. The Chinese government or (going back many years with different rulers) have regularly screwed over the average Chinese citizen. So many Chinese people cannot forgive their government for the latest "cultural revolution" that they allow their children to be educated in the US or europe with ZERO chance of living in their homeland ever again.

I once worked with a Chinese guy who came to the US so he sould "feel free for once." He & his wife had a little American-born boy who had a bit of trouble in school (poster child for ADHD). The kid would respond in English when they spoke to him in Chinese, but they didn't seem to care. One day, I asked the dad if he was teaching the boy to write in Chinese, and he said "Nah, it's tough enough for him to write in English. Besides, he'll never need to read Chinese b/c he'll never live in China."
