What is interesting is, non-Christians do not understand, it really makes no difference whether that crucifix is in urine or not. Jesus on the cross was meant by the Romans as a shameful death, and that is understood by Christians in general. To shame it more means nothing worse than what it represents. I have always wondered why atheists hate Christians of which I am one. Just ignore us, we don't care what you think.
Threatened death, thievery and destruction of an artist and his piece to protect an idol, a statue, which the Bible strictly forbids. Any supposed Christian who stole, destroyed, threatened death to protect a statue will go to hell. Remember your commandments. Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth. DO NOT WORSHIP PAINTINGS OR STATUES!
People shouldn't insult Christ God Himself who they are going to stand in front of at the Last day to be judged. Anyhow....it's hardly art this heap of talentless rubbish LOL. Well....I guess atheists should just continue to abort and contracept themselves into an early grave. CATHOLIC STATE needed for the future then I guess.
I am me to proclaim what is art or not :P I suppose you think a dirty rubbish bin is art?! Yeah....the cultureless think anything is art. LOL. CATHOLIC STATE for the future!!
@theCuno100 Again, its the difference between colonialism and legal immigration. Like you said, in the case of colonialism, we had no right to be there. But no subsequent British person who has legally moved to India has been deported because they are white. Likewise, you can't deport Arabs or Africans from the UK because they aren't white.
@theCuno100 Well, the whites in Africa are there because of colonialism. This is not the same as legal immigration. I'm unsure of whether the government in South Africa is 'cruel to whites', but whether it is or not does not justify the deportation of Muslims in western Europe, (most of whom are Arab, not ethnically black). The existence of Muslims in countries like the UK has nothing to do with the situation in South Africa.
This artwork was "open to interpretation" so we can assume that whoever wanted to get offended got offended.

How do these hooligans who ruined a piece of art "Piss Christ" feel about the burning of the Q'uran? Are they willing to kill Christians because some pastor destroyed a holy book that is supposed to contain the word of Allah (creator and sustainer of the world).
How do they feel about my using the Bible as a doorstop?
Are they willing to accept the punishment of giving up their own free expression? Religion does poison everything.
@drfoxcourt The same people who protested against Piss Christ will likely strategically denounce Quran burning, because the "double standard" would be too visible if they didn't. If they want to suppress blasphemy, they've got to do it for all religions. But they (many of them at least) will also protest against the building of mosques, the "islamisation" of Europe, and would happily send back all muslim immigrants back "home".

I remember Sister Wendy commenting on Piss Christ and saying precisely that. While she also said a ham-handed way of conveying the message about Christ and contemporary culture, she was unequivocal about it not being blasphemous. A number of conservative Catholics I knew pretty much reacted as if they'd discovered that Sister Wendy was blowing Andres Serrano for years.
In any case, yes, "fuck you" to those who destroyed it.

As for the incident i don't care too much if just a copy was destroyed. I guess the crazy maffackers got some sort of penalty for it, so maybe the world became a slightly better place.
The art piece represents the commercialization of Christ. Christ is being pissed on by the Church to make a profit. If you want to protest something that would be offensive to Christ, protest Megachurches.
You should read David Mitchell's reaction to the attack. It's an interesting article I think you would like, Latum... It's an art critic who condones the attack on the art piece not because of the radical Christian message but because of the ongoing dialogue of action/reaction that the Piss Christ photo was intended to create. The article is on The Guardian's website. Food for thought!
I find the public funding of art to be a complete waste. I'm an atheist and find the piece poor quality anyway considering he has to outright tell people what it means.
"I smeared feces on a can of soda; obviously my intention is to make a statement about internet piracy." What a joke.
Anyway, it's a good piece of art. It's really both pleasant to look at and quite within the boundaries of tastefulness. (If you don't think so, please go see some modern art museum with installation art. Bring smelling salts and ginger.)
And the fuss around it is, I think, hilarious. And telling. Or why is it that religiousness and stupid-of-this-kind always seems to come in pairs?
would it they be so pissed if it was submerged in blood? or in petroleum? i think the artist should do Mohammed in Ice or something just to piss off another group.
Were you abused by a priest / Vicar, you do seem a tad obsessed by religion. I personally do not believe in god but I don't have a problem with those who have a faith and live in a way that doesn't harm others.
My family are all Methodists and go to a church that welcomes all, they run programs to support, African arphanages, prostitutes in London who sell sex for £5. So allthough I don't have their faith I find it hard to critisize how they act.
@jamiedunne I don't have a problem with believers either. And did I ever criticise religious people who act morally? No. I this video I'm talking about a group of people who attack a work of art because they personally didn't like it, and thought it should be banned, which is ridiculous. This has nothing to do with good, honest and charitable believers.
Degeneration. Idiots promoting a non-talented idiot for envy of real artists. Which doesn't seem dangerous in the art world, but gets ugly when they are in charge of nuclear plants and evacuation in earthquake areas, hurricane prone reagions. Or become national and world leaders. You morons can piss on Jesus all you want, but eventually, you shall not covet your neighbor will piss on you. Or any of the others you think you are so smart about.
@LatumWay No, you and all you arrogant atheists think you are the smartest when you are stupid fools. And where does it say I'm the smartest? It says G-d and how he made things is and are the smartest. This nit wit made this piece of junk because there was no other way the moron could get attention. How is this art if any idiot can make the same? Instead of Edison, should it have gone to an idiot like you with a little wooden Jesus to light in a glass for a light bulb for your athiest agenda?
@sunRsaturn "And where does it say I'm the smartest?"
I meant you think your comment was the smartest, dumbass.
"How is this art if any idiot can make the same?"
Agency? the fact that he did it and you didn't?
"Instead of Edison, should it have gone to an idiot like you with a little wooden Jesus to light in a glass for a light bulb for your athiest agenda?"
@LatumWay Where does it say I think my comment is the smartest? Because he did it and others didn't, doesn't count for shit. If I answer a math test by shitting on it and non of the other students do it, I pass? That's what you'd like and that is part of your agenda. To promote sick ignorant sadistic garbage like you because you are always spoiled, greedy, and jealous. A real artist or talent hurts your feelings. Should I piss on a Jesus on my drum set because other drummers are way better?
@jussts The only it that doesn't work is you. The whole world is with me. Even austrailia since I was sad that the lead singer of silverchair got beat up at a baltimore macdonnalds.
You know I've noticed historical trends in relation to religious fundamentalism/extremism.
They always precede an enlightenment, it's like a backlash, a polarization.
Today I think it's the rapid growth of atheism, and the facts of evolution, our place in the universe, the overwhelming likelyhood that everything they believe is wrong.
They are being dragged, kicking and screaming, into a godless future.
It's good like bleeding is good, painful, but you know you're not dead.
I give this guy props, in a way he's pretty original I mean he gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "an artist puts a little bit of himself in his art" that's for sure XD
@brucegrenehan1 Go try and make real 3D or your own laws in the Universe...lol. G-d is more than 100% protected from an imbecile like you. You can't even fake good behavior to get out of here. No cheating, or killing the competition, even.
In spite of the fact that this artist has a "right" to do something doesnt make it proper. I have the full right to ram my fist up my ass but that doesnt mean that it will always be in my best interest to do so. When this piece was in the conceptual phaze Im certain that the frame of mind was certain hatred and being disrespectful just for the sake of being disrespectful. Why else would someone do this. No different than racism if you ask me. But then again, whos asking me, right?
@HereticNotions I totally disagree. Like I said, I'm pretty sure he knew this would offend people, and yes, he then decided to do it anyway. But I don't think it was motivated by hatred at all. I understand the reasoning he gives and I think it makes sense on some level.
i dont understand it, by religious dimwits definition GOD gave us piss, so why not make a picture of his son who is also himself, wich he sacrificed to himself, to forgive sins he himself, created swimming in piss.
By the way, Jacob, as an art lover/student, you must have heard of Marcel Duchamp ? What about his famous ready-made piece called "L'urinoir" , guess what ? It was attacked by a nutjob some years ago ... (don't think he was a Christian fundamentalist though)
@Latumway Was that the only copy in existence or are there others? I'm trying to gauge how annoyed I should be that someone would destroy a work of art; I just don't like that sort of thing. I don't even have to like the piece, I could even think it's a load of old tosh, but it's always wrong to destroy art of any kind (imo).
I agree with your analysis Jacob. The fact of playing La Marseillaise at the end is quite eloquent. I'm French and even though this group of fundamentalists you mentionned is still considered by my fellow countrymen as a bunch of retards, I must admit there are hints of re-christinization of the country. Take the public radios for instance. Not a single day this week without programmes about the Easter celebrations. A couple of years ago, it wasn't so. It's not the only example, sadly.
It's hard to disagree with this guy. He's so damned reasonable. But I do disagree. it's a nice looking photo but it's cheap art, meaning that many artist do something controversial just for the renown, as was done in this case. I frankly don't believe the artist is being honest in his intent or the meaning of the piece. It's like when some grad student will desecrate a flag every so often, and some veteran will go ape shit. Of course the artist has the right to create no matter what others think
I'd be like, "Go ahead, ban it in France!" The more art gets banned the more popular it will inevitably become. Case in point, this video. You really can't do more for art than try to ban it.
The thing I find funny is that if he never told anyone the liquid was his piss, everyone probably would have loved it.
Damn... if there wasn't any title assigned to the photo, or if nobody told me it's particular name or story, I would've simply thought of it as a just another glorifying picture of Christ in a golden light, or some sort of amber... or atleast hanging jokingly in a golden, drunken stupor. But... oh wait... that's piss. El-Oh-El. Kind of looks like the Steel Reserve I'm drinking right now.
That doesn't make me feel very good about this glass in my hand :l
This reminds me of the article I read on yahoo about what Brian Singer said about his movie superman returns.
He mentioned how he thought the myth of Christ was moving and beautiful and he used the metaphor in the film.
Instead of reading the whole article or learning what the word "myth" means, they were all criticizing Singer for calling what they thought to be self-evident nature of Christ a myth.
And that's an award-winning project? OK, I guess. I get the statement about commercialization, but I don't see the value of the "art." Maybe that's why no one asks me to judge any art contest. It's just not that impressive.
What if it is really just apple juice or stale beer? Serrano could be pulling the wool over every ones eyes and having a good laugh at our expense. Think of it, the whole western world in a stupid uproar over a glass of beer.... Makes one question the sense of perception.
@TemporalOnline Its because I don't honestly think this piece of art was made entirely to offend. As I said, it might have (in fact, it almost certainly did) enter into Serrano's mind that this might offend people. But I do genuinely think it was an appropriate way to communicate his dissatisfaction with the commercialisation of Christ. (cont.)
@TemporalOnline DMD on the other hand is a concerted organised effort to offend, for the sake of offending, and more importantly it has no real aim or direction and has no hope of doing ANYTHING BUT offend people. If you are about to do something that you know will offend, go ahead and do it. You have every right to. But if you are doing it with the sole aim of offending, with no real aim or idea about what it would achieve, it isn't art. Its a clumsy, stupid political statement.
@LatumWay I totally disagree with you about DMD having the sole purpose of offending people. Yes, people will get offended by that, BUT, it serve to these purposes (at least from my POV):
1)Lowering -mostly muslims- "awareness" when something like that happens (just like with all jesus related "bad" things) or just like allergic people being exposed to the allergic thing in low doses until getting used to - the aim of DMD is being "forgotten";
@LatumWay its not just about offending, its to show how ridiculous there offense is. It is a picture that they will kill over in a heartbeat, which is a lot crazier then slashing a picture.
@LatumWay DMD isn't just about offending people. It was organized because an political cartoonist had their life threatended for their published work. It's an organized effort in order to try to get those who take offense to their religious codes being broken by those who don't follow those codes that their laws should not be forced upon everyone. It is a political statement, but I don't think it's particularly stupid. I'm still "meh" on it, so I can see why you are against it. Great video, too.
"..no...aim or direction and..no hope of doing ANYTHING BUT offend"
I disagree. To me, it's more about showing solidarity with those whose lives have been and continue to be threatened by barbarous religious zealots.
Imagine if Piss Christ had been created in the time of the Inquisition. Serrano would have likely been drawn and quartered. However, following centuries of secular criticism, satire, and ridicule, Christianity has lost that power, and, hopefully, Islam will follow suit
If he had said the cross was submerged in honey knowing it was actually urine, the photo would have been a huge hit. Oh well, I guess Christian nut jobs aren't exclusive to the US.
glad you made a video about this. They were talking about it back when I was in highschool, and in college it was kind of a turning point for me as a christian becoming an atheist. As a christian I had never even seen the art. It was just one of those stories you hear about from republicans about how the government was bankrolling the desecration of Christianity. Once I saw it I was like "oh... huh.... doesn't look so bad tbh." thanks for making this vid!
Maybe it's just me, but I like the visuals of the piece but find it hard to enjoy because I know it's urine. I would find it more enjoyable if the fluid was something that looked as good but was otherwise nice, such as apple juice, but then it would lose it's meaning. It just envokes ambivalence in me because I find it asthetically pleasing and not simultaneously which in my mind makes it a greater work of art, because it invokes a complex emotional response, which I feel is the purpose of art.
Don't worry too much about sounding like a twat when you pronounce Avignon. You barely even register in comparison on the twat scale compared to how French people sound when they pronounce -anything-.
As someone pointed out before, isn't this being misunderstood by so many people a good reason for it to not be so pretentious? Unless someone is indeed interested in art or working in that industry I wouldn't expect them to get what he meant unless they were told so.
@aestevalis0 Does something need to have valuable resources in order for it to be valuable? Humans aren't worth all that much in resources, but if you combine them, you still get more than just the pieces. I see this piece of art in that holistic aspect, even though the materials itself are almost worthless to me, the combined piece is worth a lot in my opinion.
I actually think it's a pretty good piece of art too, just visually speaking and not taking into consideration the political/religious motivations. I wonder how Christians who had never heard of it would react to it if they saw it and didn't know it was urine.
If Serrano didn't say that his fluid he used was piss, then I would have completely changed my viewpoint. I must say, the artworks looks neat, but the use of piss disturbed me...

Basically, what the hell are you talking about?

Degeneration. Idiots promoting a non-talented idiot for envy of real artists. Which doesn't seem dangerous in the art world, but gets ugly when they are in charge of nuclear plants and evacuation in earthquake areas, hurricane prone reagions. Or become national and world leaders. You morons can piss on Jesus all you want, but eventually, you shall not covet your neighbor will piss on you. Or any of the others you think you are so smart about.

@sunRsaturn This is possibly the stupidest comment on this page. And the funny thing is, you think its the smartest...
Degeneration? Don't make me laugh, fool.
LatumWay 10 months ago 12
@LatumWay No, you and all you arrogant atheists think you are the smartest when you are stupid fools. And where does it say I'm the smartest? It says G-d and how he made things is and are the smartest. This nit wit made this piece of junk because there was no other way the moron could get attention. How is this art if any idiot can make the same? Instead of Edison, should it have gone to an idiot like you with a little wooden Jesus to light in a glass for a light bulb for your athiest agenda?
sunRsaturn 10 months ago
@sunRsaturn "And where does it say I'm the smartest?"
I meant you think your comment was the smartest, dumbass.
"How is this art if any idiot can make the same?"
Agency? the fact that he did it and you didn't?
"Instead of Edison, should it have gone to an idiot like you with a little wooden Jesus to light in a glass for a light bulb for your athiest agenda?"
What on earth is the 'atheist agenda'?
LatumWay 10 months ago 12
@LatumWay Where does it say I think my comment is the smartest? Because he did it and others didn't, doesn't count for shit. If I answer a math test by shitting on it and non of the other students do it, I pass? That's what you'd like and that is part of your agenda. To promote sick ignorant sadistic garbage like you because you are always spoiled, greedy, and jealous. A real artist or talent hurts your feelings. Should I piss on a Jesus on my drum set because other drummers are way better?

You know I've noticed historical trends in relation to religious fundamentalism/extremism.
They always precede an enlightenment, it's like a backlash, a polarization.
Today I think it's the rapid growth of atheism, and the facts of evolution, our place in the universe, the overwhelming likelyhood that everything they believe is wrong.
They are being dragged, kicking and screaming, into a godless future.
It's good like bleeding is good, painful, but you know you're not dead.

HereticNotions 10 months ago
@HereticNotions I totally disagree. Like I said, I'm pretty sure he knew this would offend people, and yes, he then decided to do it anyway. But I don't think it was motivated by hatred at all. I understand the reasoning he gives and I think it makes sense on some level.

By the way, Jacob, as an art lover/student, you must have heard of Marcel Duchamp ? What about his famous ready-made piece called "L'urinoir" , guess what ? It was attacked by a nutjob some years ago ... (don't think he was a Christian fundamentalist though)
needledropdamagedone 10 months ago
@Latumway Was that the only copy in existence or are there others? I'm trying to gauge how annoyed I should be that someone would destroy a work of art; I just don't like that sort of thing. I don't even have to like the piece, I could even think it's a load of old tosh, but it's always wrong to destroy art of any kind (imo).
MrFivefivefivesix 10 months ago

But... oh wait... that's piss. El-Oh-El. Kind of looks like the Steel Reserve I'm drinking right now.

Prelude610 10 months ago
This reminds me of the article I read on yahoo about what Brian Singer said about his movie superman returns.
He mentioned how he thought the myth of Christ was moving and beautiful and he used the metaphor in the film.
Instead of reading the whole article or learning what the word "myth" means, they were all criticizing Singer for calling what they thought to be self-evident nature of Christ a myth.
Ignorance bothers me.

I don't understand you this time. You support DLandonCole against DMD(mostly now against Joniversity), but you support this.
Is it because you consider it art? If yes, than can the DMD be OK with you in case of everybody say that they are making a piece of art?
Btw, nobody would care if the artist didn't talk that it was in piss. They would find it "lovely".
TemporalOnline 10 months ago
@TemporalOnline Its because I don't honestly think this piece of art was made entirely to offend. As I said, it might have (in fact, it almost certainly did) enter into Serrano's mind that this might offend people. But I do genuinely think it was an appropriate way to communicate his dissatisfaction with the commercialisation of Christ. (cont.)
LatumWay 10 months ago
@TemporalOnline DMD on the other hand is a concerted organised effort to offend, for the sake of offending, and more importantly it has no real aim or direction and has no hope of doing ANYTHING BUT offend people. If you are about to do something that you know will offend, go ahead and do it. You have every right to. But if you are doing it with the sole aim of offending, with no real aim or idea about what it would achieve, it isn't art. Its a clumsy, stupid political statement.
LatumWay 10 months ago
@LatumWay I totally disagree with you about DMD having the sole purpose of offending people. Yes, people will get offended by that, BUT, it serve to these purposes (at least from my POV):
1)Lowering -mostly muslims- "awareness" when something like that happens (just like with all jesus related "bad" things) or just like allergic people being exposed to the allergic thing in low doses until getting used to - the aim of DMD is being "forgotten";
cont

TemporalOnline 10 months ago 2
@LatumWay its not just about offending, its to show how ridiculous there offense is. It is a picture that they will kill over in a heartbeat, which is a lot crazier then slashing a picture.
Dursty87 10 months ago
@LatumWay DMD isn't just about offending people. It was organized because an political cartoonist had their life threatended for their published work. It's an organized effort in order to try to get those who take offense to their religious codes being broken by those who don't follow those codes that their laws should not be forced upon everyone. It is a political statement, but I don't think it's particularly stupid. I'm still "meh" on it, so I can see why you are against it. Great video, too.
mskillzeee 10 months ago
@LatumWay
However, following centuries of secular criticism, satire, and ridicule, Christianity has lost that power, and, hopefully, Islam will follow suit

hop208 10 months ago
glad you made a video about this.
Ninjaculation 10 months ago
I don't see what the fuss is all about, it's so bad that calling it a 'pile of piss' is a compliment
Scarletpooky 10 months ago
Maybe it's just me, but I like the visuals of the piece but find it hard to enjoy because I know it's urine. I would find it more enjoyable if the fluid was something that looked as good but was otherwise nice, such as apple juice, but then it would lose it's meaning. It just envokes ambivalence in me because I find it asthetically pleasing and not simultaneously which in my mind makes it a greater work of art, because it invokes a complex emotional response, which I feel is the purpose of art.

As someone pointed out before, isn't this being misunderstood by so many people a good reason for it to not be so pretentious? Unless someone is indeed interested in art or working in that industry I wouldn't expect them to get what he meant unless they were told so.
Saaduk92 10 months ago
Yeah, it's artistic, visually captivating and the message behind it is valid. But still, it's just a picture of something floating in a jar of piss.
aestevalis0 10 months ago
@aestevalis0 Does something need to have valuable resources in order for it to be valuable? Humans aren't worth all that much in resources, but if you combine them, you still get more than just the pieces. I see this piece of art in that holistic aspect, even though the materials itself are almost worthless to me, the combined piece is worth a lot in my opinion.

I think by saying that 'they just don't get it' illustrates a deeper point: that it is pretentious bullshit. Art, by definition, should be
