In 1919 when Towlkowsky first formulated the parameters for the Ideal Cut, diamond cutting technology was no where as advanced as they later became in the late '50's and onward. Therefore girdle polishing would leave marks that would drop the Polish and Symmetry grading down from "Ideal". With advanced diamond cutting tools, girdle polishing enhances by allowing more light to enter and be refracted up to your eye. The polished faceted look which is much more beautiful and pleasing to the eye.
Even the "standards" for ideal have been lessened over time. It is the industries own fault. There was a time when an ideal cut would never have a polished girlded edge; today there are many AGS 000's with such. Would this loosening of standards continue to follow in a superideal?
