@SchindlerElevator902 fluid gets dirty and burns, should change it every 30 thousand miles on that van. 2 thousand codes can trip that light, get is scanned, or ignore it if it runs fine.

Hello Scotty, I have an on and off check engine light (no symptoms) for the past yr for honda civic 2000. I was told that I need to replace the transmission. around 2000. What I am curious now is that all the mechanic did was getting the code P0740 and drive the car a little bit. Is that enough to diagnose the problem? I went to two independent mechanics btw. Thanks!
@kzability he's taking an educated guess, but sometimes the torque converter solenoid assembly can be replaced and it's fixed. I assume he looked into the tranny and saw metal fillings, and if so, yes, it would need replacing. Have that checked for sure by another guy, and if they don't see fillings, it's worth trying to fix.

@alexisnpaco that's an old VW, you need a VW obd I scan computer, they aren't cheap (like most VW things.) Mine cost over 4 grand, so I'd advise finding someone with one to do the scanning.
hello scotty, i own a 2009 chevy optra.The check engine light blinks on and off and the steering wheel and the car vibrates mildly only when the car is at a stop.I got it checked out and they said it could be misfiring.They changed the spark plug, air filter, engine and tensioner belt, valve cover gasket, cleaner brake parts and the carburetor cleaner.Soon the engine became very noisy and the Engine oil pressure warning light also appeared. they say sensor malfunction/ oil filter change. HELP!
@umagigi2 find a real mechanic who knows what he's doing. They were just guessing, you need a dealer level scan computer to work on those newer models, many guys don't have one or don't know how to operate it. A TON of stuff can do that, but the computer has tons of data to analyze by someone like me who knows, when they see the car and scan it.
@scottykilmer Took the car to the dealers and found that 45 other owners of the 2009 Optra reported the same problem. They brought in engineers from Korea but couldn't find why the check engine light came on. According to them its a defect on all 2009 model Optras ever manufactured. Their advice 'SELL THE CAR'!!

For the Past Few Months I have had the Check Engine light switch on and off. Every few weeks it is for a duration of an hour to a day. I had borrowed my buddy's OBD II scanner and it would not physically connect to the car's computer. I have come to realize that the 1994 Cutlass Ciera has OBD 1.5 (not OBD1 or OBD2).
My guess was that the O2 sensors are starting to fail. Is the only way to pull te code to put it to a Diagnostic Machine?
@FoxyWolfProductionz find someone with an old obd scanner to check it out and to analyze the small amount of raw data that such an older machine get can from obd I. too many things just to guess sensors. Scotty

@youngnwreckless956 tons of things can do that, from a worn out automatic transmission, to a slipping clutch on a standard, to fuel injection problems, or computer problems. Start by having a good mechanic scan the computer system for trouble areas. Scotty

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. 3.2liter. Why does'nt it go into park? All of my gears work great once they are in gear. It needs somr jerking and shoving but it goes into R, N,D just not park or slap shift mode.
@caigancaigan There is an interlock so you can only get out of park with the brake pushed down. Perhaps that electronics is breaking down, not sending electricity to the shifter interlock motor to release it. Scotty

Hello Scotty, need your professional opinion and suggestion. My 2002 eclipse overheats and I replaced the thermostat but didn't fix the problem. The top hose gets hot and bottom stays cool. I opened the radiator cap n there is not water pressure or circulation on top hose. Water was coming out of the ac drain by outside by floor of vehicle.
I hope its the water pump. Vehicle would make noise (ac belt) when ac is turned on. hope to hear from you soon.
I was replacing my radiator fan motor 97 honda civix and the cel came in when I started the car I freaked out! I took a deep breath watched this video and I disconnected the battery and check my fuse box make sure everything was secure I heard a snap hooked the battery back on a bye bye cel check your fuse box might just be something loose or not on right thanks Scotty
@ilovedesi13 CEL lights come on for over 2 thousand different reasons. Of course check all connections for tighteness, but if it comes back on , scan the computer and e mail me the actual code. Scotty

@stanisci59 scan tools for those old things give VERY little data. I use a snap on modus, but it cost 10 grand back in the day. go to auto zone, they might still sell cheap OBD I scanners. Scotty
Well today my check engine started flashing (it has been lit way before); only happened after i accidentally drove over a large puddle while it was pouring outside... Luckily i had my scanner to check the codes: P0300, p0301, p0302, p0303; 3 cyl misfires and a ho2s circuit... I drove it to the nearest gas station to check the spark cables and the air filter.. turns out the housing was soaked.. and after setting everything back in place, start the engine, the light just stayed on.

I had a clown bring their car into me asking for replacement of spark plugs. I asked him why does he want them changed (been down this road before). His reply "the guy down the street diagnosed my check eng. light and said I need spark plugs". Told him that we can put them in but at his request and no guarantee that it will fix the check eng. light. He came back in 2 days later stating my check eng light came back on. Wound up being a ckp reluctor wheel bent causing a bad signal.
Hey Scotty! Question. . . I took my 95 jetta in to aamco; because my check engine light came on, of course. The technician grabbed one of those readers but unfortunately my car didnt not have an insert for it. He told me that most older models dont have the plug in. @oakster702 Could also be a battery cable. I never would have thought a CABLE could go bad, but one on my 04 Dodge Neon wiggle a cut in itself, and the one on my 86 Ford Bronco apparently did the same. In fact, the neon cut off several times while driving back in 08' because the cut would open and close with the terrain on the road.

@0069manny could be either, that stuff's complex, and I only use factory oxygen sensors myself, aftermarket ones are often crap. But hondas are known for bad cats, only you can't check it yourself due to the previous information being true. but if it runs fine, it hurts nothing. Scotty
or do the homer simpson 3 step method to fix any check engine light, Step one take the dash apart, step 2 locate the check engine light, step 3 cover with electrical tape or if youre feeling like a custom look you can use Cartoon licensed bandaids, reflective tape for that classic chrome look the only limit is your imagination. although probably better to check out the code

Sometimes the check engine light comes on out of error and when this happens you forgot to mention that you can reset the check engine light simply by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it.
do you have any advise for finding a vacume leak?...my mom has a dodge caravan and when you give it gas it makes a high pitch whisteling noise...also the check engine light is on and says its the evap system leak and was told its a vacume leak
I know all about the dreaded flashing MIL. 2 years ago one of my job's Chevy Express vans had that happen. They still wanted me to take it out, but I told them hell no because I learned before that the flashing MIL is bad news. Turns out I made a good call because the mechanic discovered one of the lifters disintegrated and gouged the camshaft which produced a loud tappet-like noise which triggered the knock sensor to produce voltage signals that caused the PCM to set off the MIL.
My check engine light came on last summer, the car would jerk forward when you hit the gas. Took it to the dealer, they couldn't figure it out. They drained the gas and then put some new gas in and it was okay for a few days. Now it comes off and on all the time, I have no idea why and neither does the dealer apparently.

@heyDESIREE1 You have some type of brake problem. Have the vehicle scanned to see if there are any trouble codes to show the area of the problem. It may only be one problem turning both lights on. Scotty

Hi Scotty, You should do some aftermarket replacement of stock parts to your vehicle or someone else's on video cuz that would be invaluable. My question relates to that. I put a DME header, AEM cold air intake and GReddy exhaust on my 2005 scion tc and the CEL has steady stayed on. I then bought a Strup CEL eliminator. The threads on the O2 sensor looked a bit mangled but my boyfriend fixed that. The CEL turned off but returned the next day.
@luchaa21 Under the passenger side dash below the glove box there's a normally green wire for OBD I, but realize those oldsters don't give much strong data. Older mechanics have a machine to hook up to it, but many newer mechanics don't have one. Scotty Kilmer
hey scotty, i have a 2003 ford windstar and i was cleaning the engine bay today and after the check engine light came on. i wasn't particularly careful and didnt cover up the alternator, but i made sure that the spray did not reach the belts and the alternator. any ideas what i may have done? do you think in the morning the code will clear or do i need to clear it myself?

Sometimes it shifts fine others it will do nothing (had to tow it home today) But tomorrow morning I'll be able to get in it and drive away. The guy I bought it from said that it needs two solenoids, don't know where he got his information from. The fliud level is fine and doesn't smell burnt. Help!
@MOONMAN1963 Those hondas have very complex trannies that break down a lot. They do have torque converter lock up solenoids that go bad, so you might change those first and keep your fingers crossed. Scotty Kilmer

@rabqaiser not ready means something is wrong with those systems so they won't reset. On that old thng, often a bad main computer will cause that.

For the Past Few Months I have had the Check Engine light switch on and off. Every few weeks it is for a duration of an hour to a day. I had borrowed my buddy's OBD II scanner and it would not physically connect to the car's computer. I have come to realize that the 1994 Cutlass Ciera has OBD 1.5 (not OBD1 or OBD2).
My guess was that the O2 sensors are starting to fail. Is the only way to pull te code to put it to a Diagnostic Machine?

@FoxyWolfProductionz find someone with an old obd scanner to check it out and to analyze the small amount of raw data that such an older machine get can from obd I. too many things just to guess sensors. Scotty

scotty after i had my engine light shut off it turned back on again im assuming the same reason but thing is my Camshaft sensor is fine becase i have no trouble starting the car and its running fine what do you recommend i do to shut it off and get it to stay off? is there a fuse i can pull that works those dash warning lights?

@youngnwreckless956 tons of things can do that, from a worn out automatic transmission, to a slipping clutch on a standard, to fuel injection problems, or computer problems. Start by having a good mechanic scan the computer system for trouble areas. Scotty

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. 3.2liter. Why does'nt it go into park? All of my gears work great once they are in gear. It needs somr jerking and shoving but it goes into R, N,D just not park or slap shift mode.

@caigancaigan There is an interlock so you can only get out of park with the brake pushed down. Perhaps that electronics is breaking down, not sending electricity to the shifter interlock motor to release it. Scotty

@scottykilmer My brakes are bad and my emergency brake is not currently working. Could that be causing the problem? or have something to do with the interlock motor not releasing? I messed with it for a little while from the passenger seat and know it goes into park , but sometimes I have to try to put it in park a couple times. the gear shift is still stiff. I was told something could be bent

Hello Scotty, need your professional opinion and suggestion. My 2002 eclipse overheats and I replaced the thermostat but didn't fix the problem. The top hose gets hot and bottom stays cool. I opened the radiator cap n there is not water pressure or circulation on top hose. Water was coming out of the ac drain by outside by floor of vehicle.
I hope its the water pump. Vehicle would make noise (ac belt) when ac is turned on. hope to hear from you soon.

I was replacing my radiator fan motor 97 honda civix and the cel came in when I started the car I freaked out! I took a deep breath watched this video and I disconnected the battery and check my fuse box make sure everything was secure I heard a snap hooked the battery back on a bye bye cel check your fuse box might just be something loose or not on right thanks Scotty

@ilovedesi13 CEL lights come on for over 2 thousand different reasons. Of course check all connections for tighteness, but if it comes back on , scan the computer and e mail me the actual code. Scotty

@stanisci59 scan tools for those old things give VERY little data. I use a snap on modus, but it cost 10 grand back in the day. go to auto zone, they might still sell cheap OBD I scanners. Scotty

Well today my check engine started flashing (it has been lit way before); only happened after i accidentally drove over a large puddle while it was pouring outside... Luckily i had my scanner to check the codes: P0300, p0301, p0302, p0303; 3 cyl misfires and a ho2s circuit... I drove it to the nearest gas station to check the spark cables and the air filter.. turns out the housing was soaked.. and after setting everything back in place, start the engine, the light just stayed on.

the check engine light is bullshit! it has nothing to do with the operation of your car.Ihave driven cars for years with the light on the inspection racket ia at the heart of this issue. The oil light is a whole other matter take IT serious The auto repair industry has got you by the neck.

I had a clown bring their car into me asking for replacement of spark plugs. I asked him why does he want them changed (been down this road before). His reply "the guy down the street diagnosed my check eng. light and said I need spark plugs". Told him that we can put them in but at his request and no guarantee that it will fix the check eng. light. He came back in 2 days later stating my check eng light came back on. Wound up being a ckp reluctor wheel bent causing a bad signal.

Hey Scotty! Question. . . I took my 95 jetta in to aamco; because my check engine light came on, of course. The technician grabbed one of those readers but unfortunately my car didnt not have an insert for it. He told me that most older models dont have the plug in. Is there a way to get the code in my situation? And is there a way to install a plug-in in my car, because it doesn't have one?

@oakster702 check all the connections on the fuse box, remove the box and check the connections on the bottom side. Bad connections do that. Scotty

@oakster702 Could also be a battery cable. I never would have thought a CABLE could go bad, but one on my 04 Dodge Neon wiggle a cut in itself, and the one on my 86 Ford Bronco apparently did the same. In fact, the neon cut off several times while driving back in 08' because the cut would open and close with the terrain on the road.

Hi,I have Honda 2004 65000 miles,first I had codes for oxygen sensors,replace the 2 of them,now I get P04020 ,could be 1 of the sensors that I replaced or could be the cat? Thanks

@0069manny could be either, that stuff's complex, and I only use factory oxygen sensors myself, aftermarket ones are often crap. But hondas are known for bad cats, only you can't check it yourself due to the previous information being true. but if it runs fine, it hurts nothing. Scotty

or do the homer simpson 3 step method to fix any check engine light, Step one take the dash apart, step 2 locate the check engine light, step 3 cover with electrical tape or if youre feeling like a custom look you can use Cartoon licensed bandaids, reflective tape for that classic chrome look the only limit is your imagination. although probably better to check out the code

Sometimes the check engine light comes on out of error and when this happens you forgot to mention that you can reset the check engine light simply by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it.

do you have any advise for finding a vacume leak?...my mom has a dodge caravan and when you give it gas it makes a high pitch whisteling noise...also the check engine light is on and says its the evap system leak and was told its a vacume leak

I know all about the dreaded flashing MIL. 2 years ago one of my job's Chevy Express vans had that happen. They still wanted me to take it out, but I told them hell no because I learned before that the flashing MIL is bad news. Turns out I made a good call because the mechanic discovered one of the lifters disintegrated and gouged the camshaft which produced a loud tappet-like noise which triggered the knock sensor to produce voltage signals that caused the PCM to set off the MIL.

My check engine light came on last summer, the car would jerk forward when you hit the gas. Took it to the dealer, they couldn't figure it out. They drained the gas and then put some new gas in and it was okay for a few days. Now it comes off and on all the time, I have no idea why and neither does the dealer apparently.

I Actually like it. it give it attitude....thanks for the tips...I got a hand me down car, protege 1999, and I'm at Universaty right now...the check engine light came on last week...was trying to find a way to not be to expensive and try to do it myself...Had the same problem in the past and it was the O2 sensor that was not clean...after 400$ of work the tech. couldn't find the prob. Put fuel injector cleaner and seem to do the job for 1 year but now back on

@figweed Go ahead and get is scanned for codes first. BUT, realize those stupid check engine lights can come on for the dumbest of reasons, many people find out it's a very minor thing and just live with it for years, turning it off when it's inspection time. Scotty

hi scotty, i drive 2007 saturn ion level 3 2.4L and has 50,000+ miles, my engine light came on and the codes read p0301-p0301p-p1174-p1174p, so far i've clean the MAF, and Throttle, and changed all spark plugs. i dont have the right stuff to check the car and i dont want to buy unnecesary parts and put them in if its not going to help. if you have any idea of whats going on pls reply back.

omg those doves are everywhere. i hate that sound. I put a new header, cold air intake and exhaust on my 2005 scion tc and CEL came on. Then bought a CEL eliminator from strup. Bought OBD2 sensor which read P2195 O2 sensor signal stuck lean bank 1 sensor 1. It seems like i need to have it reprogrammed cuz it seems to run great. Think i need to have it reprogrammed?

Hi Scotty, You should do some aftermarket replacement of stock parts to your vehicle or someone else's on video cuz that would be invaluable. My question relates to that. I put a DME header, AEM cold air intake and GReddy exhaust on my 2005 scion tc and the CEL has steady stayed on. I then bought a Strup CEL eliminator. The threads on the O2 sensor looked a bit mangled but my boyfriend fixed that. The CEL turned off but returned the next day.

@luchaa21 Under the passenger side dash below the glove box there's a normally green wire for OBD I, but realize those oldsters don't give much strong data. Older mechanics have a machine to hook up to it, but many newer mechanics don't have one. Scotty Kilmer

hey scotty, i have a 2003 ford windstar and i was cleaning the engine bay today and after the check engine light came on. i wasn't particularly careful and didnt cover up the alternator, but i made sure that the spray did not reach the belts and the alternator. any ideas what i may have done? do you think in the morning the code will clear or do i need to clear it myself?

Hey Scotty, I got a 2001 Honda Civic, the tranny is acting up. Sometimes it shifts fine others it will do nothing (had to tow it home today) But tomorrow morning I'll be able to get in it and drive away. The guy I bought it from said that it needs two solenoids, don't know where he got his information from. The fliud level is fine and doesn't smell burnt. Help!

@MOONMAN1963 Those hondas have very complex trannies that break down a lot. They do have torque converter lock up solenoids that go bad, so you might change those first and keep your fingers crossed. Scotty Kilmer
