This is what I can't get with in regards to conservative Republican thinking, there's an all or nothing mentality. You have to have free markets to be successful and low taxes or nothing to Republicans. Although, free markets have never worked. Greed and avarice always take over. You have to have some regulation and some control. A mixed economy, Keynesian economics, whatever you want to call it,seems to be a better way to address the issues of all the people. The only reason MLK, Jr. was a repuklican was that when he was younger, Republicans were leaders of civil rights. Of course as he got older, the Democrats became the leaders in Civil Rights, under Kennedy, and more under Johnson. The southern Democrats threatened to leave the party, and the Repuklicans opened up their arms and said, "You want bigotry, we got it in spades....(no pun intended), you want segregation, we'll support you 100%. The Repuklicans welcomed bigotry, and it thrives there.
