I remember you could advance to the next stage if you kill one guy and then advance your other... my bro and I were on the last stage and mothra made it through, but then he killed godzilla... so we lost...
Don't know why the US version didn't keep Godzilla's themes for the title and intro. I always wondered where they were played when I found them in the Sound Test.
I remember how much fun this game was! Godzilla was basically the go-to guy for everything, and you just needed to hope you could get Mothra to survive a mad dash to, and through, the ending stage for each planet.
Japanese title screen and intro trump the US version by far; I remember accessing the sound test and wondering where in the game tracks 00 (main title aka Godzilla main theme) and 01 (intro screen aka Monster Zero March) were used.
Some of the scariest bosses I've faced. In movie form they are less scary but in this convulsing sprite format placed with the pitch black background, and incredible (for its time, especially) soundtrack... quite excellent.
I wonder why the title/ intro music had to be so different for the US version... weird.
Akira Ifikube's stuff is the best for the Godzilla/ Gojira films!
Hey can anyone tell me what the piece of music is called for the password screen? I know I've heard it in other forms before, and other movies, I'm sure of it.
I still have Monster of Monsters and play it every once in a while...(I'd play it more, but its too much of a fight to make my NES work and if some one takes a step in the other rooom it resets...) if only it was a PSP port...
never played this game before, but now I REALLY want to play it! What are old Mogera and Gezorah doing in the game? I didnt think that they appeared in any Godzilla movies...
they didn't... moguera was in Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla but this game predates that movie by 5 or so years. I'm not sure why they didn't go with Megalon, Titanosaurus, or some other monster actually in a Godzilla movie... but whatever, this was still one of my all time favorite NES games. Although after seeing the famicon version i feel a little cheated on not getting 8 bit renditions of Ifukube from the films but oh well, the U.S. soundtrack to this game was decent.
I was just a tiny little kid when this came out. A few years later (when I was old enough to walk, talk, and hold an NES controller) I remember renting it from this ONE ODD BALL VIDEO STORE in my hometown. Nowhere else carried it. And of course, these were the dark ages just before the Internet, and I couldn't buy it anywhere either! Thanks for posting! Nostalgia is good for the soul. :)

Dear god I owned this game and it was possibly the worst game I ever played, only reason I used to play was to listen to the music (though it sounded alot like the batman nes music!)
I really liked this game as a kid, though I never beat it until I was in junior high. I always killed Mothra first, what a useless character. I still have the original cartridge btw.
The only thing I never liked about this game were the homing fireballs that could kill a monster if it hit just right. And unless you could hit it with a full breath attack... it would always strike your monster.
I know what you mean, about those fireballs, I hate them. If I had known the swear words back when I was that young, I probably would have been like: "What the f---!?" when it kills the monster in one go.
Then there's Gigan, whp pins you against the side and tears you apart, not really giving you a chance to fight back, bleh.
to avoid the homing fireball, use the breath attack right before it strikes, it will still hit you, but will keep going through you as opposed to pushing you along while killing you.
I was never lucky enough to get an NES, but used to have an SNES over a decade ago until it broke =[ I had the Godzilla game for the SNES and from what I remember of it, it was about the same as this. Except for one monster per level and when you killed the monster that was the end of the level. I think there were powerups like Nuclear reactors you could (eat?) Honestly though I thought Godzilla for SNES was sort of boring, but I was playing Killer Instinct I and II and Mario Paint too ;)
my favorite NES game of all time along with SMB3 but I never understood why he was teamed with Mothra weren't they mortal enemies? And I thought Baragon was

It depends on the movie. Godzilla movies are like pro-wrestling. One day they're a team, the next day one is hitting the other over the head with a skyscraper.
lol! I know, I even remember a movie where Godzilla was fighting Ghidorah and Ghidorah was the savior of the japanese people!!! and the same is going on in WWE right now, I wouldn´t be surprised if Brian Kendrik turned on Paul London and hit him over the head with a chair
this game had such cool music. i must admit, while i really enjoyed hearing the actual godzilla tunes (specially the part where its all like in the year 2xxx, thats one of my favorites) i missed the tunes they made for us version (course you just have to play mars and planet x. also moguera and gezora totally blow hahaha.
This was one of my favorites. Right up there with Mega Man and Mario. Ever tried the code GH1D0RA and then used the password it gives? You'll go to a bizarre, random middle-of-nowhere level.
Yes, I agree 100% MegaFantastic187. TGL and Godzilla have, in my humble opinion, the best overall music scores in the NES kingdom, bar none. Compile was right on the money on these two gems; haven't played Zanac though. BTW, I LOVE the font these two video games use for their passwords and messages. Perfect tens all around, both games!
This was one of my favorite NES back in the day! I would keep renting it from the video store, because I could never manage to get past the bloody Jupiter stage because of the mob scene there.
