  • But can it improvise?

  • cool

  • Awesome

  • Totoro?!?!

  • Dear robots,

    NO!

    Sincerely,

    All Musicians

  • No

  • The one thing that separates us human trumpeters from robots is EMOTION.

  • How the fuck does it get a lip buzz going????!

  • @jsblackbird1 Rubber ???? idk but its pretty cool if its real.

  • A robot playing jazz trumpet is an oxy moron.

    It's good, just really mechanical

  • fuck robots they already playing better then me

  • 4 People don't like totoro

  • OMG TOTORO THEME! I LOVE THAT MOVIE! AND ITS A SMALL WORLD! OMG

  • ANYONE ELSE KNOW THAT THE SONG IS "TOTORO" FROM STUDIO GHIBLI???

One of the most innocent and well drawn anime movies ever

  • there trying to make sure humans are not needed and they can dispose of us ... these things are pointless and just a useless display of pride

  • D: Why do they keep making these useless things?!?!!? Next they're going to make robots that EXERCISES.

  • he/she is better than me

  • A robot is a robot. I understand that a lot of engineering was probably put into this, but I play the trumpet, and I don't think the robot can be as expressive as a human. Sure it can hit right notes and rhythms, but I doubt it can sound human, and not sound mechanical. Basically, music isn't good unless you can feel it-(sorry for the cliche).

  • id like to see a domestic company make a robot like this... HA FAIL

if toyota can make a robot like this im sure they can make a damn good vehicle too.

  • he play " Anpan Man " 55555

  • They make things too complicated, I can make this with an air pump and solenoids hooked up to midi and I can record for it or play in real time using a keyboard

  • It starts as an a cool idea then a few years later a human looses his job. You probably know the rest.

  • It is the ability to create a machine to do difficult tasks like this that create a bridge for more difficult achievements so I also cheer at this great feat of construction

  • . . .

where does the air come from

  • Lame... Well the machine is cool, but pretending to play the trumpet is lame...

How does hard plastic form an embouchure? Forget if the thing can blow air or not if there's no embouchure there's no notes... But it is a very nice recording of a trumpet.

  • it's fake because i am playing a trumpet, and to play trumpet you must have a soft lips, and move it when you playing, to get high notes you must press your neck - unique. who play trumpet knows that. SO I SAID IT IS FAKE!!!

  • its not thay are made to fit and acomidate with things its dusent need to move that much its a fcking robot it can do eneyting lke the one that playes the violin i play the violin nd thare are things that seam rong so i went to jupan to figyer it out it was real and freacked me out the trumpet playing oneis real to. i saw it

  • @madness7433 i sstudy physics and play trumpet so i know the sound is made with a vibration of air so it behind its mouth is a valve vibrating he air in the way human lips would it could play the trumpet quite well infact better than human because it wont have human flaws in imperfections so before you coment about how it is fake remember the best minds have worked to make this real so please SUT THE HELL UP UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT!!

  • @madness7433

For real...dumbasses like you who major in shit like the arts are too thick to understand the amount of engineering that goes into creating things like these. So its better if you SHUT THE FUCK UP.

  • @DaSingingDesi Wow, your comment just bleeds fail. Don't encompass everyone "in the arts" to what that guy said. He is a moron. You sir, are the dumb ass.

  • @kodred89

Oh sorry I offended you...look's like you play in a jazz band...that's why you have a soft spot lol...see the thing is, with engineers, we also look down upon the "other" majors and especially those that in the "liberal arts and sciences"...it's just that we scoff at them. No offense to you or any person in particular...the problem is the Professors themselves deride these majors and people in the arts so it gets instilled in the students from the very beginning lol.

  • @DaSingingDesi

That's alright. I get a little hot headed when I see my major under attack. All I ask is that you berate the person and not everyone in the department. Haha. I do know how the attitude is with other majors views of us. My school isn't that bad though. lol

  • @DaSingingDesi

  • @kodred89

I agree with what you say but isn't it true that when you insult someone you tend to generalize everybody and insult them all? And yes, my school doesn't have that great of a music school but a pretty high ranking engineering school and it seems that every Professor is haughty and full of themselves...doesn't make a positive influence on the students. Also, I'm very much into music myself and am studying acoustics in Electrical Engineering...which is why you can see I got offended...

  • i hope the american consumers don't complain about the gas pedal getting stuck in the carpet

  • the robot is way better than me on the trumpet LOL

  • it's a trumpet playing stormtrooper! Should have been in the bar scene in Star Wars!

  • very impressive.

  • why is this robot native american?

  • hahahaha

  • its a small world after all

  • Was this robot playing the theme song from the film Totoro?

  • Yes, that was it!

  • when im playing even for just band class, i still put all my emotion and give it all i got when playing the trumpet, this is boring. THIS IS WHY ROBOTS SHOULD NOT PLAY INSTRUMENTS

  • I promise you "dude" one day robots will be able to play with as much passion as you do. Just give them a few decades

  • They will be able to play the same notes, rhythms, and dynamics, but will never be able to play with "passion." You cannot program a robot with the emotions that a human musician feels while creating their piece of art that is music.

Just as a robot will never be able to love, they won't be able to perform tasks with passion.

  • @fearmeforiamthedude pretty sure i'd rather watch the robot than you but that's just me

  • @Bartinili He's not a moron, he's 100% right. A machine can never play an instrument like a human. They can only play music, they can't express it.

  • it doesn't sound good to my ears without the artistic ability to show emotion and stand out, i mean anyone can do a cover but it takes a soul to write a good song... isn't that what art is all about

  • how does it get its "lips" to vibrate and tense up?

  • too me zoom out it looks like zora link kinds zoom in it looks like princess leia lol

  • Good demonstration, Impressive

    Very, very emotionless though!

  • well they sort of are clapping to the designer(s)

  • I'd say he has good style and what not but he just kind of sounds off on the high notes. I'm betting they haven't made a robot that can hit double C and actually sound good.

  • this is really a crude remark to real musicians like myself who work there ass off to get what they have and where they are with there playing abilities. If theres anyone else who feels this way let me know.

  • this what i feel like to, it tickes me off. i've commited my whole life to trumpet playing and now this thing just takes away whats special about a human

  • i really feel that way, also.

  • in also feel that way

  • well, robots will never have the musicians ability to improv, think, or create music...

  • Comment removed

  • i've never thought about it that way. I play the trumpet too. But not that experienced

  • not entirely true I would argue -- look at generative music, its already being done to some extent, of course it will always require some kind of seeding but that could be anything (and even your own brain needs to be seeded somehow)

  • Hence the Matrix.

  • It's a small world after all.

  • lol look up the definition of music this robot meets it :P and if people can go sit in a room for fucking 3 minutes and do nothing and that's music and everyone letting their alarm on their watches going off is music this is ezily a great piece and mad props to the robot ^_^ i'd pay to see him play over those other guys any day

  • it is fake how does he buzz his lips

  • rubber and compressed air

  • rubber and servos

  • Im gonna have to call fake on this one. That robot is way to stiff and jerky to play that smoothly

  • fake look at his fingers :-D

  • I'd love to see this thing close up as I am sceptical to say the least.

  • totaro to totaro

  • have you never seen a youtube video where audio and video aren't quite synchronized...?

  • so fake. it's fingers and valves are not moving according to the music!

  • Thats because old quality videos get there audio and video unaligned, so they looke different, anyone else would say it is real.

  • hahhaa tysleeman is pretty much dead on on this one... if you look closely, there is a single sustaining note that is being played and the robot is pushing the valves as the note is being played!! hahahaaa nice! i hope that people are smart enough to tell the difference between a true musician and a bunch of notes put together to sound like a song!! there is a mute that goes in the bell of a trumpet and when you push a button, it plays taps... this technology is nothing more than that!!!

  • further more ive been playing the trumpet for 8 years. I know what it takes to play one. and you cant have that kind of tone with the trumpet shaking all around on its "lips". Im sorry to tell you all toyota is blowing smoke up your ass

  • I'm guessing that you aren't that updated in robotics....

Fun to read comments that people that are upset for no reason write

  • is it playing totoro and it's a small world?

  • It's amazing how far robotics have come so far, but this is still just a toy.

There's nothing even close to intelligence behind such a robot.

  • Scary.

  • MY GOD! WE'RE ALL SCREWED!

  • but in all fairness its not playing it its recored it cant improvise

  • Dude, shut up. A fucking robot is playing the trumpet...

Besides there have been instances in the past where computers have been used to create music using certain algorithms and formulas, so it's only a matter of time before you'll have a robot that can compose and improvise.

  • "A fucking robot is playing the trumpet"

I haven't him seen doing that.

  • my god, its even tapping its foot in time!!

  • do they have to make them so alien like jeez scary

  • I know! I like to think about things like "Is this a primitive Gray?"

  • I suppose like lol.

But if they made them look like humans, people would be freaked out, because they would be like 'It's a human, but it's not!'

lol you got a point though.

  • hehehehee aww its cute!!!

  • robots may be able to play instruments, but i dont think they'll be able to compose anything of their own design in the near future. Robo-Mozart is still far off

  • i liked the dancing...i kinda forgot i was watching a robot for a second when listening and watching it.

  • Cool! it plays just as well as I can!

  • It obviously can't tune itself. That sounds good for a robot, but I don't think real musicians have anything to worry about yet.

  • Yay TOTORO!!!!!

  • Aw, nostalgia

  • I'm glad I play the violin because the violin playing robot is not even close to stealing my job....but this trumpet playing robot....sounds better than a lot of trumpet players out there

  • When it started playing "my neighbor totoro"...I was sold!!!

  • I love Totoro! : )

But I hate music playing robots >: (

  • it isnt music it is telling the other robots to prepair attack through soundes.

  • Hahahah

    oh-HO NOOO-ho!

  • @willking1234 amd the last part is the victory song when they take over :P

  • could have picked a better song to have it play

  • so is it actualy blowing air though the trumpet or is it a speaker just playing music

  • air

  • noticed it playing "its a small world" we are all screwed

  • Totoro... Totoro...

  • all i gotta say is wow just wow.i play violin and that robot plays pretty good.

  • Thats bull... the robot can do vibrato and not even i can do it.. that means i suck.. lol

  • is that for real? I get the one playing the violin, but how can this one work? How does it pass air into the trumpet? What about the mouthpiece? No overtones, though, right? (I don't play trumpet, I learn sax)

  • there is a vent somewhere in the back under the "armour" that sucks up air through a vacuum and out the mouthpeice

  • that is just freaky...

  • god damn amazing. i love robots

  • teach it some streetlight manifesto then i b impressed

  • I'm not sure if its actually playing cause the fingerings are way off... : l

  • i think the video is out of sync with the audio like on lots of youtube videos

  • now im obsoliete as a trumpet player...still can kick its ass on it :)

  • now do Classical Gas!!

  • Nice, give "it" an AK 47 and let see what he can make out of that...

  • nah, maybe an m5 or antiaircraft *snickers like a madman* ITS A SMALL WORLD AFTER I BLOW IT UP

  • anpanman,totoro,and?

  • small world,and?

  • for a minute there it sounded like music from totoro...

  • aww it's all cute and everything!

  • he looks like a coustume... NO OFFENCE.

I don't know to beileve it or not.

  • boring music... :[

  • he is cute as he ist stepping from foot to foot..but these cold black eyes make me nervous ...

  • he will inevitably become aware of himself, begin not wanting to play the trumpet, and then kill.

  • Very Cool!

  • I will be impressed if the robot can produce and vibrato with the instrument

  • geeze you like vibrato huh? vibrato's a little false when used excessively don't you think?

  • no, it adds expression and vitality to the piece. The piece is made "alive" through vibrato instead of a "dead" piece that has no expression to it. We like artists that can draw the audience in to his or her playing by what they are communicatating. This robot has none of these characteristics. Whether the vibrato is used excessively or minimally the performer is added their interpretation to the piece.

  • chill out, i'm just saying there is more to great music than vibrato. there is a surreptitious complexity to human nature as it corresponds with the mystery of music. check out the book musicophilia or this is your brain on music. you have good points, you gotta admit though, he's pretty fuckin cool.

  • All i need to do is get sum money so i can get one of these and get out of my band class

  • Robots dont have airs in their mouth. They cant play trumpet if they dont have air.

  • I imagine that there were mechanics incorporated to bring air in from the surrounding area and push it through the robot's mouth in imitation of a breath. I haven't seen the schematics, though, so I'm not sure. D:

  • What hurts is that he can play better than I can. :/

  • IT'S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALLLLL IT'S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALLLLL IT'S A SMALL WORD AFTER ALLLL

God. I hate that song lol. Stupid Disney.

  • needs work on articulation.. :D

  • If all humans are as ignorant and stupid as most of you who post in this robotic videos, then the human race is already doomed *shakes head*

  • is it just me... or did you not just post on a robotic video...

  • Robo Severinsen

  • stop taking our gigs you bastards!

  • I approve- like sending battle droids into war, we can send these little trumbots into bar mitzvahs and labor day parades and football halftimes. Few will even notice.

  • i hate this robot. It is not the same as seeing some one actually play.

  • We listen to prerecorded music anyways, it's not like it made the music. Listening to this is just like listening to an mp3 player, just with an actual instrument.

  • whatever, I have a 10th grader that could play this just as good.

  • corollaboi. good one

  • Totoro music!

  • I could almost fall in love with this robot :P lol

  • No olviden al robot wakamaru de mitsubishi

  • How about a cure for cancer? No, I think we need a robot that can play "its a small world". LoL

  • Hey he's a nice guy ! he played trumpet in my band once...

    visit his myspace..

  • this is true

  • TOTORO TOTORO!

  • THis is so auwsome MY Cuz just seen this robot live at FOrd Field Like Yesterday it was so sweet......

    -xlilxdramax12

  • all they got to do is more or less make a seal and send a sorta fart noise truough it .. its real as long as the seal isnt broken and air is not force out it doesnt have to have lips

  • I want to hear it play a Dub C... then I will be impressed. I want to know how they make it tongue...

  • I wanna hear you play a dub C then I will be impressed

  • ya....me 2

  • ugh. as far as technical advances go, this is neat, I guess...but robots have no place in art, imo, and i hope the day never comes when computerized music is preferable to true music (though it may be a little late for that already)...sad! :(

  • ES REAL IGNORANTES ES TAN REAL COMO LOS ROBOTS DE SONY Y HONDA (ASIMO)

que sumados a este son los tres robots humanoides mas avanzados hasta ahora

  • It is real!!! Exactly. Do you think they would spend the money to make a robot that holds a trumpet, and fakes playing it? That would be almost as much of a waste of money as making a robot that actually plays the trumpet! It will never play as well as a human. It is a waste of time, and valuable resources. How about a cure for cancer? No, I think we need a robot that can play "its a small world". Which incidentally is one of the worst songs ever written. Good choice guys.

  • just because its a robot doesn't mean its not good. the only flaw with being a robot is the lack of cerativity, therefore it will never be able to go imrov. or freestyle. it will only be able to play what is already written and programmed into it.

  • That wasn't what they intended, there's no use at all for digital things to play acoustic instruments, it's just for show off, it's a compittion between honda , toyota & others

  • not true, its quite possible to program the ability to write songs... its not EASY, but possible, yes

  • It was also supposed to show off the mechanical and electronic advances. It's not that easy to design a robot that can do something like playing a trumpet or violin.

  • Shit man! USA SUX! Japan is the best making futuristic stuff ;D

And that was real... I play trumpet ;)

  • Some people are so ignorant, yes the robot has a form of soft lips.Look it up. It's like when you put grass between your thumbs and make it vibrate, except this is more complex than that. Research people, your on the net damn it. Do you really think Toyota wold spend this amount of money just to fake this feat.

  • I think the audio is late thats why the fingers dont match up with the notes.

  • I saw a hole whice could be it's "mouth" and maybe inside that is something that helps for the embouchure. You know like to tighten to make higher notes.

  • im pretty sure it's real and it's not a metal mouth. go to their website and read about it. and where's the point of putting up that robot just for acting like he's playing

  • i play trumpet to, i was wondering how he made the sound with a metal mouth too. but his fingers do match the notes, you don't have to press the botton each time for a new note. it could still be real though, maybe toyota has thought of a new way to create the sound?

  • im a trumpet player and sadly...this is fake he couldnt form an ambusher with a metal mouth lol

  • it's "embouchure"

  • His fingers don't match up with the notes being played. I think it's a recording being played through the trumpet. Still kinda cool though.

  • Are you sure the fingers and notes don't match up?
