A robot is a robot. I understand that a lot of engineering was probably put into this, but I play the trumpet, and I don't think the robot can be as expressive as a human. Sure it can hit right notes and rhythms, but I doubt it can sound human, and not sound mechanical. Basically, music isn't good unless you can feel it-(sorry for the cliche).
They make things too complicated, I can make this with an air pump and solenoids hooked up to midi and I can record for it or play in real time using a keyboard
It is the ability to create a machine to do difficult tasks like this that create a bridge for more difficult achievements so I also cheer at this great feat of construction

How does hard plastic form an embouchure? Forget if the thing can blow air or not if there's no embouchure there's no notes... But it is a very nice recording of a trumpet.

I agree with what you say but isn't it true that when you insult someone you tend to generalize everybody and insult them all? And yes, my school doesn't have that great of a music school but a pretty high ranking engineering school and it seems that every Professor is haughty and full of themselves...doesn't make a positive influence on the students. Also, I'm very much into music myself and am studying acoustics in Electrical Engineering...which is why you can see I got offended...

hahhaa tysleeman is pretty much dead on on this one... if you look closely, there is a single sustaining note that is being played and the robot is pushing the valves as the note is being played!! hahahaaa nice! i hope that people are smart enough to tell the difference between a true musician and a bunch of notes put together to sound like a song!! there is a mute that goes in the bell of a trumpet and when you push a button, it plays taps... this technology is nothing more than that!!!

And i understand im incorrect on robots standing. There are plenty of miniature robots capapble of it (they wrestle them in japan and what-not) however there are very few robots capapble of standing and walking. let alone tapping its foot and playing a trumpet

robots may be able to play instruments, but i dont think they'll be able to compose anything of their own design in the near future. Robo-Mozart is still far off

no, it adds expression and vitality to the piece. The piece is made "alive" through vibrato instead of a "dead" piece that has no expression to it. We like artists that can draw the audience in to his or her playing by what they are communicatating. This robot has none of these characteristics. Whether the vibrato is used excessively or minimally the performer is added their interpretation to the piece.
chill out, i'm just saying there is more to great music than vibrato. there is a surreptitious complexity to human nature as it corresponds with the mystery of music. check out the book musicophilia or this is your brain on music. you have good points, you gotta admit though, he's pretty fuckin cool.
I imagine that there were mechanics incorporated to bring air in from the surrounding area and push it through the robot's mouth in imitation of a breath. I haven't seen the schematics, though, so I'm not sure. D:

i play trumpet to, i was wondering how he made the sound with a metal mouth too. but his fingers do match the notes, you don't have to press the botton each time for a new note. it could still be real though, maybe toyota has thought of a new way to create the sound?

no, it adds expression and vitality to the piece. The piece is made "alive" through vibrato instead of a "dead" piece that has no expression to it. We like artists that can draw the audience in to his or her playing by what they are communicatating. This robot has none of these characteristics. Whether the vibrato is used excessively or minimally the performer is added their interpretation to the piece.

I imagine that there were mechanics incorporated to bring air in from the surrounding area and push it through the robot's mouth in imitation of a breath. I haven't seen the schematics, though, so I'm not sure. D:

ugh. as far as technical advances go, this is neat, I guess...but robots have no place in art, imo, and i hope the day never comes when computerized music is preferable to true music (though it may be a little late for that already)...sad! :(

It is real!!! Exactly. Do you think they would spend the money to make a robot that holds a trumpet, and fakes playing it? That would be almost as much of a waste of money as making a robot that actually plays the trumpet! It will never play as well as a human. It is a waste of time, and valuable resources. How about a cure for cancer? No, I think we need a robot that can play "its a small world". Which incidentally is one of the worst songs ever written. Good choice guys.

just because its a robot doesn't mean its not good. the only flaw with being a robot is the lack of cerativity, therefore it will never be able to go imrov. or freestyle. it will only be able to play what is already written and programmed into it.

It was also supposed to show off the mechanical and electronic advances. It's not that easy to design a robot that can do something like playing a trumpet or violin.

Some people are so ignorant,yes the robot has a form of soft lips.Look it up. It's like when you put grass between your thumbs and make it vibrate,except this is more complex than that. I saw a hole whice could be it's "mouth" and maybe inside that is something that helps for the embouchure. You know like to tighten to make higher notes.

i play trumpet to, i was wondering how he made the sound with a metal mouth too. but his fingers do match the notes, you don't have to press the botton each time for a new note. it could still be real though, maybe toyota has thought of a new way to create the sound?
