From Detroit... Cracks me up how people from NY, LA & elsewhere say how 'dangerous' Detroit is! EVERY City has bad areas, I'd take my chances on the East side than most parts of South Central! If you visit, lots of unique year-round recreation, CANADA!, Big Lakes, restaurants and nightlife, and one of the hottest arts scenes and music cultures in the WORLD! Any Hollywood type that has actually filmed here (not CGI of San Diego!), and they'll tell you about the awesome people & places.

Depends on where you live in LA. There are more conservative little communities in LA that are expensive (to which I live in, although we students are more to the liberal side, the ones running the place are conservatives. But again, there's better schools in conservative areas).However, the downtown areas where others live, you can get about anything with 20 bucks.
