  • What's the song at the end?

  • to me the movie was ok, i just didnt like how the story was almost the same as in Dances with wolves, or how we just see the flesh cast counted times, to me the effects steal the show, gotta admit they are amazing but i got tired of watching them for so long, as for the cast it was ok just wish i could have seen more of them

  • The story was nothing special, the film was. Stunning and very entertaining. Did people really expect to find something deeply intelligent , thought provoking and eye opening in a James Cameron action film? I'm pretty sure he aims to entertain on a large scale, not to educate with his films. Guess I'm one of a few that enjoys well made action films as well as subtle + intelligent "artsy" films.

  • Who is James Cameron?

  • @jakemiller5000

LOL. No wonder Cameron still has to show his previous films in his trailers.

  • "Avatar is the new Star Wars."

I couldn't say it any better myself.

  • here is someone who is not a fucking retard

  • The reviewer probably has no idea about cinema, CGI or SCIFI for that matter. No, Scifi is nowhere near about world exploration. The graphics were good but again nowhere near out of the uncanny valley. Heck, even Blizzard has done a better job with animating characters. What is the film good about, is experience in picture. Sure direction of the scenes in marvellous. But that is only it. The plot is a copy of a number of films and books and thankfully Cameron acknowledges that.

  • @hellegennes the "reviewer" knows exactly what he's talking about and sci- fi IS often about exploration unless you've never heard of star trek. Good sci fi is about taking the audience somewhere they've never been. The argument that Avatar was borrowed by a number of other stories, I dunno what world you live in where anything is absolutely original. Almost everything is borrowed from something. Blizzard, btw, has never made a movie, only short animations.

  • @FuryoftheFilmFan : I have been reading scifi since I was 10. I can pretty much tell you this is crap. Whatever fits the bill of "exploration" is labelled as "adventure", not scifi. Of course scifi works of art can work on that theme but the genre comes nowhere close to be characterised by it. Plus, building on themes and archetypes is different to copying from certain works of art. Oh, and Blizzard doesn't run on a $400 M budget nor is their purpose to make feature length films.

  • THREE WORDS: WHAT THE FACK!

  • oh, no fury! you got sucked into the cg is great so that makes up for the lackluster story BS too? james cameron is turning into micheal bay with this one, and years from now people will say it's dated with the special effects we'll have then. terminator, great, terminator 2, awesome, even titanic at least tries to have a story.

  • @mack0035 Graphics make videogames good?! So Street Fighter 2, Samurai Shodown, GoldenEye etc. are all bad games because they dont have shiney visuals?....

  • What I love is that it treated Pandora like a character... the cinematography uses every frame to treat it like a character and not just a background which reflects on how the marine learns to love it the same way a love story focus's on the character's love interest.

The ONLY other film I'VE EVER SEEN DO THIS BEFORE was Kubrick's film THE SHINING. No other movie I've seen do what Cameron and Kubrick did with their world and that is a strong directorial trait EXTREMELY RARE in a filmmaker

  • I hate complaints on this movie... its ignorant to dismiss this movie just because it has similar themes to other films... Star Wars took every mythology and folk tale and rolled it into one movie... that's what made it so great.

Most Oscar films are low concept. Departed for example is a remake plus its like any other cop movie we've seen... just executed extremely well.

Avatar was taking a story we've seen a tweeked things with it to make it its own movie. I'll explain in a 2nd post

  • you missed 1 thing. there is a hidden message in avatar that not many people saw.

now its obvious theres an anti war message but there is 1 more.

    SPOILERS ALERT!

the hidden message is basically people spend far too much time on the internet. if you think about it the guy is crippled he cant do anything but he then "connects" to a "computer" and while tehre he can do basically what ever he wants just like the internet.

  • I hate how people think it's clever and discerning to rip on Avatar. it was far from perfect, but no aspect of it sucked! The story was perfectly serviceable- not entirely original, but still functional. The acting was good, and the CGI was unbelievable. Avatar was a great experience, and no amount of pseudo-film snobbery will change that. Fury was, as always, completely right in the points he brings up!

  • I really enjoyed this movie, thought it was great, but at the same time I thought it was highly over rated some people were like best movie ever made.

  • The best 3d movie... and I watched it through a flat screen. Also, the characters are stuck in 1d.

p.s. @furyofthefilmfan :Did you get motion sickness or something?

  • The ovie is an unamerican piece of trash.

  • @TheRandomAssassin1 yes because thats why it sucks >_>

  • I wasn't entertained by the movie...maybe I was over-hyped or something. I didn't expect much out of the storyline, but I guess I found out a bit about myself: beautiful graphics < ok story + horrible characters. (For me personally anyways). On a very personal level, I did feel like the story was a little preachy since I was manipulated into hating the military who attacked Pandora. Some people felt very 1-d despite the 3-d graphics I saw at imax. But characters wasn't the point of the movie so.

  • Hey Fury, as a fan of this film,I've got to ask:

now that it's been a few months since it's release and the hype has died down, do you still have the same feelings about the movie that you did in December? Do you still think it's gold?

  • Its weird. Why don't more people acknowledge the blatant rip offs from fern Gully?

I enjoyed this movie immensely, But I couldn't stop thinking of Fern gully

  • @twiztidlestat Because Ferngully isn't the first going native story with an eco-friendly message.

There are works written by in the 19th Century that were basically Ferngully but with a European forest setting instead of a tropical rain forest one. I think they had fairies in them also.

Also, Avatar is more influenced by the John Carter of Mars books by E.R. Burroughs, which themselves contained messages decrying industrialization and the destruction of the natural world.

  • @togio100

I agree, but this did truly take alot of specific portions of fern gully

  • @twiztidlestat Because its not a ripoff of FernGully. Cameron wrote the story for Avatar in 94, before FernGully was even out.

James Cameron is both a writer and a director, the stories he directs are his, not someone elses.

  • @MrEffectfilms

Incorrect. Fern gully came out in 1992, Pre-dating this supposed written of Avatar by two years. Sorry

  • @twiztidlestat Well, regardless if it really were just a rip-off Im sure there would have been some sort of lawsuit for it, point being its Camerons story and his alone.

  • @MrEffectfilms

My point, was obviously LOST on you, I stated that he obviously snaked ideas and blatant scenes from Avatar. Look at the construction truck attack scene etc

  • well to be honest this movie is just a future version of pocahontas but more badass.... dont get me wrong this movie was freaking sick watching in 3d on shrooms the visuals melted my mind!!! i give it a 10 a freaking 10!!!

  • I watched it yesterday. And I personally don't really care if the story is unoriginal, the visuals are just AMAZING and glue you to the screen. I would watch this movie again only for the visuals! As for the story although it is not the most original (but which story is really?) I think it was done well enough so you could relate to it. It didn't leave me totally cold or annoy me immensly.

  • this movie was fab but the creatures creep-ed me out! it reminded me of Pocahontas in many parts. i don't blame Jake for wanting to stay in Pandora because he can actually walk, i mean would if i couldn't walk! very intense movie a true love movie and a 5 star movie and as u said that's how 3d should look like!

  • It was a honest movie, but it wasn\'t that scary, could earn been scarier. I watched the unrated version on DVD, and there wasn\'t much difference...watching it now at freemoviehq . o r g

  • sorry but you are just wrong. To simplify this movie just because it reminds you of two other movies is pretty ignorant and I'm sorry you can't come to enjoy this film because of that. In terms of Star Wars, this movie pushes technology the way that movie did, it took us away to another land the way star wars did and the world agrees with this movie being #1 week after week ....just like star wars did.

  • Well I don't think someones opinion on a movie can be just wrong. As far as story goes I think it was very weak. This base on Pandora, how did it get there, why would gunships get hammered by spears? I mean it's so stringy and weak, what is planet Earth like now? The ending was frustrating and predictable, no twists or anything. The movie doesn't really work focus on his experiences, it focuses on the cute CGI work. Simple, yet weak story but I must say, it was executed well.

  • @FuryoftheFilmFan Fuck technology! From now on it will be all effects and no story because of this movie. Avatar has no form of substance. Giving this film a good review because of effects is like giving Transformers 2 a good review because of effects. I don't give a shit if it is revolutionizing cinema with the effects. When Star Wars did that it backed it up with a good plot and characters. Avatar has nothing to give me. It is ruining cinema, and only gets a 1 out of 4 from me.

  • @FuryoftheFilmFan the dialouge was the movie's weakest part

  • @mack0035 Don't forget to mention that they insult our men in uniform.

  • @mack0035 Actually graphics make 'a good part' of movies and video games. Good graphics in video games make it visualy entertaining, it goes the same with movies, films like Avatar tried to create lovely effects that are out of this world. The way Avatar was made it needed good visuals. Not always the case though, 2012 looked awesome but it was just shocking.

  • When you mentioned how painfull blue things can be I got Doctor Manhattans penis in my mind, lol

  • im going to get a lot shit for this but i hated this movie

  • Just been to see this today in 3D and it is "Simply Stunning"!!! It truly "is" an "experience"!!! I enjoyed the simplicity of the story and the way that it allowed you, as the viewer, to revel in the beauty of the planet!! "More Please"!!!!

  • It's been reported that people are feeling sad and abandoned after leaving Avatar- depressed they can't go live in the world that it creates- and I completely understand. You're right in calling it a "life event", a must-see: it creates the most gorgeous world I've ever seen.

Last time a movie blew me away like this was "The Matrix" ten years ago- it is the new "Star Wars"- and James Cameron's masterpiece.

  • i meant when i said " poor equipment " it was 1999 when they did the voices thing and then over the years they got better stuff to use in the movie then put it on the big screen

  • i've seen it when it came out in 3-D it looks really cool felt like i was in the movie lol it took 10 years!?!?!?! i heard it took that long because the stuff to make these kind of movies well wasn't that good and was 1999 when they were thinking about it and then 10 years later it finally started to come out they had poor equipment so the movie would have been a lot better if it came out in 2020 no i was joking this is a good movie but this comment is long amazing

  • I saw this in Real D 3D at my local cinema and it's visually stunning, beautiful. I felt as though I really was on the planet Pandora. And much of that came from actors performances, which captivated me to "love" their world.

  • AVATAR IS SO AWESOME!!!thank you again,Fury, for giving me the heads up about this movie!!

  • They should have used image metrics for the facial capture.

  • thats the first thing a said after i watched the movie "its like star wars was in the 70's. im not even a fan of star wars since i was born in 92, but im sure if i was there in the 70's id be a huge fan. im a huge fan of avatar though, to me it's the best movie to ever come out. i wouldve paid 100$ to watch it. i only really paid 10 lol and i kept the glasses :D

  • We are on the same page my friend, great review as always

  • I went to see this movie, and WOW. I was hooked to the screen throughout the whole movie. Not just me, but the whole cinema was as silent as if there was nothing but the movie.

It was an incredible experience, one I'm sure to remember for a long time. I did come out of the cinema wishing Pandora was real.

Sure, the story is cliché and all that, but at the same time, there was some amazing, magical depth in it. It's different to anything I've ever seen, and I was infatuated by the Downfall.

  • Saw this in IMAX 3D and it was worth it! The last movie I saw in 3d was Beowulf and did not enjoy some parts of that movie but this is different. This is 3D done right! Every scene was just beautiful. The colors, the cinematography and the action was great! Haters were so focused on the story and logic that they did not see for what the movie really is. Shame really.

  • I am a lover of nature and the natural world. One thing this movie did for me is not only remind me why I love cinema, but why I love nature as well!

James Cameron has created such an amazing world and a culture that you realy feel for and care about. So despite the predictable plot, I was realy sucked in and enjoyed this movie all the way through!

  • I have been very sceptical against this film but it seams that its getting high reviews everywere i look. The reviews made me want to check it out when it comes out here, but sadly I will have to see it in 2d.

  • the dialog isn't bad. It's just not brilliant.

Guys, keep in mind. This is James Cameron we are talking about. He's not exactly Shakespeare when it comes to the dialog.

To his credit, though, each character did have their own unique speech pattern. And nothing they said was out of character

And the chemistry was there. You really believed that Jake and Neytiri fell in love with each other.

  • Fury ...I don't understand. This version is still working, so why upload the other one ?

  • bring IMAX to europe godammit

  • lol. Whaddaya mean? There are quite a bit of Imax theaters in Europe. Google up "imax venues" and that should lead you to a list with all Imax theaters in the world, with their respective addresses/locations.

  • This movie is the last nail in George Lucas' film making coffin.

  • awesome movie. who cares about the story being predictable. this is a breakthrough in film making. i'd give it the gold fury award

  • See I think thats what most people say, "who cares about story". If thats the case then, just screw the dialogue and just go see the effects and images. Isnt that the original purpose of film, to tell a good story?

  • Great review, Fury! Almost totally agree... Dad and I did find it a tad preachy, that's all. Saw it in IMAX 3D, and I was so impressed with the 'naturalness' of the 3D. I was totally along for the ride!

  • This is probably one of the best movies of the year and its definately gonna become a classic just like aliens and terminator Effects awesome action awesome Characters awesome story meh dialogue meh I mean god I felt like i could touch the characters ar points my god and this world there are so many unique creatures i love i hope more movies are made like this the only real problem i have is that seen when the entire tribe just embraces sully when he finds the toruk and just decide to follow him

  • This movie was amazing definately the best effects i have ever seen

  • there isnt an imax near me so is it worth going to see in a normal cinema?

  • yes

  • I saw the movie in 2D, and I still thought it was awesome. And I can't wait to watch it in 3D. And some people have told me that since Avatar wasn't filmed with Imax cameras, the quality actually looks worse on an Imax theater, since it's a larger screen, but the quality of the film is not good enough for it. So in the end, a normal theater with 3D would probably be better VISUALLY. Imax is still unbeatable in terms of sound :)

  • I have an appreciation for cinema. I like learning how movies are made, I like listening to the directors commentary, I like reading/listening other opinions on movies, and I just like film in general. I have been wanting to see this movie for a while now and some of my friends eiether don't because the plot looks cliched, or they do but ONLY for the action. Fury, if they see this is there going to be a huge debate over the opinion of the film afterwards? Is it actionpacked or is it story? Both?

  • Exactly.

  • It's both, and more. It transports you to another world, and in the end, you'll want to be a na'vi and live there.

  • Thats it exactly!

  • @Carcass1701

    What's it exactly?

  • Meant to reply to marksman... cheers :)

  • I see a lot of people of course are in love with the effects. Is that really a surprise to people, this is the guy who made Titanic right. I would expect nothing less than good effects.... I have yet to see anything about how good the plot and story were. Im tired of paying all this money to see underdeveloped stories that are really just "special effects" excuses to get you to the IMAX theater. Thanx FURY much luv

  • The story is predictable, but the way it is told and the emotion is good.

  • nice review man

  • cool review

    the 3d was awesome

  • Fury, I watched the midnight premiere in IMAX 3D....I was blown away. Seriously, Cameron has done it again.

The haters will always find something to hate, but that's their problem. If they can't see a good thing when it's in front of them, not my loss.

  • Did you change your idea about "You have to see it on imax"? Im going to see the film tomorrow :( You should play uncharted 2 :D

  • going to see it tomorrow :D

  • ugg, my sinuses can get me down like nothing else. I'm wanting to see Old Dogs. I bet my hubby will make me go to this one instead : )

  • Great review as always Fury! Even though we slightly liked it less than you, it's still a kick ass film! Also I don't know how anyone can't see this film in IMAX 3D, they have to start making more Imaxes.

  • It's a shame there're no IMAX here in Portugal. I think there was one, but it shut down a few years ago. I hope it's on 3D at. the movies though.

  • I was a bit sceptical of this film, sure I knew it was James Cameron so it was going to be good for maybe not the right film for me. This review seems so enthusiastic I'l give it a go in Imax thanks fury

  • fury, you rule! Gonna see this in imax3d tonight.

  • the 3D effects were nuts!!!! and I hope you get better homie

  • Seeing later tonight with 2 friends, so pumped :)

  • good review, cant wait until green lantern comes out next year

  • I saw it yesterday with my girlfriend. It was truly amazing. The 3d was crazy, the effects were beautifully done, the plot was mostly really solid and gripping... and it just had that instant classic feel. I wasn't a fan of some of the pacing and lack of explanations, and the ending kinda was a bit shallow for me, but still, I really don't care, it was mind-blowing!

  • Hm, I've been really skeptical towards Avatar because of the insane hype. Your review though, made me think that perhaps there's hope.

  • Saw this yesterday aswell.

The 3D wasnt as in your face as what little other 3D id seen. And I think thats what made it work so well on this movie. No cats jumping into the camera (the trailer for that raining meatballs movie that was shown before avatar started had painful 3D effects.

    I give the movie a 5 out of 5

  • Please, change the theme song. It's terrible!!!!

    Good review. :)

  • there will be changes soon, no worries =)

  • This movie really deserves the gold fury award.

  • Before I comment on the review, I want to say I hope you get well soon. The effort to make this reivew is greatly apriciated!

    Peace :).

  • Thanks dude, after I uploaded the review I passed out with a bottle of orange juice next to me.

  • No worries. As for the review it's self, I love the objective analysis of the films deapth as always! I'll be seeing this film later today. Sadly can't get public transport to my nearest Imax theater, but I will still be seeing it in 3D!

Would you say that while the bare bones of this film are a little basic/traditional, the meat of the film is what realy makes it special?

  • absolutely, to me that's what made this film for me.

  • I wish the closest Imax theater to me wasn't all the way in another city.

  • Same here. I have to drive an hour and 11 minutes to get to the closest one...

  • 2bad i cant see this in 3d

  • I loved this movie. I didn't see it in 3D or Imax (unfortunately) but even with that, I loved every second of it. The depth and detail that was put into this world, and how amazingly done the CG effects were done (best I've ever seen, BTW) and how realistic and expressive the na'vi were (again, best CG characters I've ever seen) really just transported me to this world, which is really what films of this genre should be about: pure, out-of-this-world escapism. Can't wait to watch it in 3D :)

  • I saw Avatar yesterday, it was EPIC!!!

By the way, maybe it's just me, but you don't sound sick.

  • this movie kicked ass

  • Feel better Fury!

This movie is awesome, awesome, awesome!

Great, universal story, great characters, great...well, decent dialog, and awesome spectacle all rolled into one.

  • The movie was awesome.. I saw it in both 3D and 2D... Even in 2D, movie was brilliant. The story and characters stand for itself whether in 2D or 3D... James "God of cinema" Cameron has created a world more stunning than god himself :)

  • I just came back from the IMAX viewing here in NY, and all I have to say is WOW. I now hang my head in shame for ever doubting James Cameron!

This is a cinematic achievement and simply one of the greatest films ever made.

If this movie isn't up for best film then I'm never watching the Oscars ever again.

Everyone MUST SEE THIS IN 3D!

  • Which theater did you go to?

  • I went to the AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13 in the City. It has one of the best IMAX screens in Manhattan in my opinion.

I also got to keep my IMAX glasses as a souvenir! ^_^

  • great review

    feel better man

  • thanks man

  • Avatar was alright. Visually it was freaking epic, but it was way too cliched and ran for way to long. Otherwise go and see it fo sho.

  • my eyes almost poped out when i saw this movie

  • Im going to see in 2 days in IMAX. .yeeeah! !

  • To be honest, the effects look like a Robert Zemeckis animated movie. T2 and Jurassic Park are more than 15 years old and still look better than this.

  • Have you seen the movie?

  • @FuryoftheFilmFan, the trailer. I know, I know, it probably looks a lot better in cinema, but.. I don't know. It looks too "shiney". I can't really describe it. I expected better from the most expensive movie ever made. Dictrict 9 had a budget of 30 million dollars, and it looks way better. (judging from the trailer, obviously)

I'm dissapointed by the overuse of CGI anyway. I always thought the CGI used in T2 or even Jurassic Park(which both had groundbreaking special effects) is nessecary.

  • I Can totally understand that, believe me my friend and I went in with some reservations ourselves. The trailers don't really do this movie justice there's a lot of subtle things in the world of pandora that really make the planet feel alive. It's easy to make a dinosaur feel alive or a monster but an entire planet..that's where Avatar does an amazing job.

  • Thanks for clearing that up. Oh, and I hope you get better soon!

  • Thanks man ! appreciate it

  • great review, movie of the year easily

  • district 9 was better. more orginal

  • I'm sick as a dog man. thanks

  • I thought Avatar was fantastic, but District 9 was really good too.

  • I envy you.

  • Hey Fury remember me from your chat? Man I saw AVATAR in IMAX-3D today. Blew my mind. Movie of the year for me, definitely.

  • hey bud wsup, glad you enjoyed the movie.

  • Awesome REVIEW!!!! I totally agree with you. This film was incredible!!! I saw the 12:01 showing. I was surpised that there was no line. Some people I know don't want to see this because they think it reflects on our war & it makes our troops look bad. I say screw them. I'm only worried that my friend will hate it because it will be slow to him. Sure it's slow in the beginning, but like District 9, it's ment to bulid up the everything. Sam Worrington really steals the film. Great reveiw.

  • Awesome review Fury i saw Avatar last night, clearly the best movie of 2009, sadly there is no IMAX theaters in Denmark so i will have to miss out on the experience, atleast i got to see it in 3D, i never been a fan of 3D found it to be overhyped IMO, but i loved it for Avatar, i rarely go to see a movie in the theater more than ones, but i will probaly see this again

  • @jlauritsen

I also can't see it in IMAX... So I have a question for you, was it good on a regular 3D screen?

The only IMAX screen in Saudi Arabia is a 10 minute drive away from where I am, but they don't show movies on that screen >:(

  • @jubailblast It was very good, well worth the money, this is the first movie i have seen where i feelt 3D really added something great to a movie, you should go see it in 3D imo

  • @jlauritsen

Ok thanks... I'm really excited to see it in 3D now!!!

  • Good review Fury. I didn't mind the plot because it was well executed. Pandora was the real star though I have a soft spot for Langs Quaritch character. The 3D was interesting but didn't blow me away: I didn't find it much more immersing than watching 2D, probably because I've always found it easy to immerse myself in movies. Avatar is a sure sci-fi classic much like District 9 and the fantastic Star Trek reboot. 2009: a great year for sci-fi!!!

  • Its been a whille since you give the gold to a movie, so im gonna see it the most fast as i can

  • excellent review!

i must ask how would you rank cameron's films?

feel better and keep up the good work

  • I'm still on the fence with this movie. Sure, the animation looks cool but I keep hearing the story and script is weak. For me, if a movie doesn't have a good story, it's not going to be one that I'll remember for awhile.

  • Well I suppose I should take back all the negative things I've said towards this film, well towards James Cameron and his outlandish comments surrounding the film. It's good to see that this film actually does deliver on the majority of the hype. All it really took was seeing the blue creatures smile, I was sold on the technology. Colour me excited for this one.

Great review. Fury, how do you think this stacks up next to other James Cameron classics like T2 or Aliens?

  • im seeing the movie in about 11 hours in imax 3D for my 18th birthday. this is my first imax 3D. so yeah i feel like an insanly lucky 18 year old and i get to see it with my girlfriend who put me through hell with New Moon (oh god even typing it seems to bring back the testicular pain that i had to endure to watch it) but i hope she likes it all the same after all its a guy's role to endure all the pain and supposedly not cry then we're going for lunch so yeah i get my slice of heaven to

  • has it toped district 9 for you i lived avatar but not as much as district 9

  • So, Avatar vs District 9; what do you prefer now?

  • @dylan9094 Avatar all the way

  • Hey Fury! Movie looks epic. Seeing it in IMAX 3D Sunday. Look forward to it!

AVATAR is this decades STAR WARS/ Wizard of Oz/ The Matrix/ Terminator 2/ 2001: Space Odyssey/ any other movie thats set the bar for visual effects, I'm happy to say so!

  • not 2001 on effects yes but story and story telling nothing has or ever will come close to 2001. but every one go see this film i saw it on a regular screen at i loved it wish i had a imax

  • Exactly, notice none of these films were praised for being well written films. Just a bunch of well done effects. Whats really not fair is that these types of films really belong to the post-production teams. They are the ones that should be getting the praise. Without them, these films would be total crap.

  • i agree

  • I think I should really try watching this movie.

  • Great review man

  • It's amazing what Star Wars did. It inspires two soon-to-be-famous directors to start making films. The first of which is James Cameron, who is every bit as good as you say he is. The second is Roland Emmerich, and I think we all know how that turned out.

Great review. I'm seeing this tomorrow! Can't wait.
