They obviously made astute astronomical observations and conjured up fancy legends connecting the things they saw with the things they could understand. What needs to be improved today that comes from time, or a calender. Especially that things are always improving everyday. I think that mental focus will change along, not abruptly, but mildly. I think that we are already are in that change. Because the earth is round, so nothing just happens. Everything gradually evolves into the next. 2012 is just a scientific focal point. Besides people need to address what they are doing to our environment before they can start worrying about an apocalypse.

2012 marks the end of the calendar, not the world. They obviously made astute astronomical observations and conjured up fancy legends connecting the things they saw with the things they could understand. This idea is ridiculous today because over the past few centuries science has helped to squelch ignorance. Now, if there were a comet or some other large body heading for earth scheduled to arrive in 2012, that would be a different story. I think there are some big ones that come close and soon!
