  • Metroid sounding or not, can we just listen to the music please?

  • This arrangement made me really angry. What a mess..

"Hey, let's make a Metroid arrangement but without any actual Metroid themes so we can reflect a deeper meaning of the game"

Makes like totally sense to me.

  • Not just a simple medley of the Metroid themes, this piece goes deep and reflects the whole style and feel of Metroid, being very artistic and complex. It doesn't simply echo the main Themes to be redudant like every other common medley, and I can appreciate and respect that.

  • @Furnardan Really? Cause I played all the Metroid classics. And truth be told, it doesn't reflect any of the things I relate to Metroid. Artistic and complex are words that can mean anything.

And honestly, if they don't echo any themes of the games they're supposed to represent then the arrangement doesn't have anything to do with Metroid.

It's just a big mess and the arranger also managed to totally destroy the Metroid theme.

I was there and I hated every second of that arrangement.

  • @Schokioki I'm sorry to hear that.

tbh, it sounds like someone took the atmosphere of Metroid and tried producing "atonal" work that would impress all the contemporary advant-garde/atonal critics. You have to have your ear highly tuned to hear all the brisk, come-and-go sounds of Metroid in the piece, not necessary just themes and melodies. True, it doesn't please the common crowed with it's lack of blunt theme-after-theme traditional style, it's more of an experiment in advant-garde

  • @Furnardan I can't help noticing your condescending attitude towards "blunt theme-after-theme traditional" compositions for the "common crowd"...

Eventually, it's a matter of taste, of course, but I think it was far too much in this one.

Furthermore, I wouldn't call the" Symphonic Fantasies' " Chrono suite blunt but beautiful though it's not much changed and fits your "theme after theme" description.

  • @Schokioki You misunderstand my direction, dear sir. I appreciated all the works in this concert, including the Metroid suite. Condescending? No, but trying to make a point, I can appreciate a work that is out of the ordinary. I'm just trying to influence an open mind, and I am in no way trying to argue or have an attitude towards you or the other works.

  • Is there any Metroid theme here ? Oh yes... at 6:20...

  • lol there sure dressed up for this garbage

  • I think people forget that Metroid is sort of a horror game. and it should remain Horror space adventure.

  • This is a horrible interpretation of metroid.

  • The german announcer said what the lyrics of the mean (before or after they played it... i forgot it).

The Lyric's are about Samus' constant Fear how broken down she is deep inside her... And i think they Nailed that Feeling :/

I didn't played Metroid other M, and the game was released slightly before the concert, so i don't think the Story of the Game was in any kind involved in the Lyrics.

But there was a manga released before, which explains exactly that.

Maby Other M wasn't that betraying?

  • It's awesome. I'm just sad I didn't recognize any of it until I was two minutes in. Although, with that kind of music, I'd say Samus doesn't need an arm cannon and the Varia Suit, she needs a sword and shield to keep up with the rather epic arrangements. :)

  • A metroid movie would be awsome. Uma Thurman could play Samus's roll, not a young, but a mature one.

  • Need a Metroid Prime part

  • people the reason this video keeps getting hate is because no it doesent sound like metroid, true, but its still really great, stop comparing it to metroid and you might just appreciate it ALOT more

  • I don't hear metroid at all.... but I can say they did a great job with the piece because it looks very difficult to play.. they played it as if Samus was defeated...

  • I understand it must've been difficult for them to play out the themes, but I honestly hear no resemblance whatsoever to any track in Metroid.

  • Original is much much better.

  • lame choice of tracks. lower brinstar ( red soil) would have been great.

  • not good, just using all that fancy stuff doesnt make a good composition

  • It all sounded really drunk and disorganized to me. The line between (over)working hard and hardly working is a bit blurred here.

  • Is 3:05 an attempt at "Crateria - The Space Pirates Appear"? 5:08 was supposed to be Ridley's Theme... can this get any more terrible? At 6:17, the trumpeter totally messes up on "Galatic Warrior - Theme of Samus Aran", but atleast it's a theme they got somewhat right (and recognizable). What a horrible arrangement.

  • this is all wrong....damn, metroid has some masterpiece musics, THIS is a terrible and lazy medley...

  • hmmmm... i don't enjoy that arrangement like the other ones, but it still is very good, very interpretative, very "big"... like an sci-fi movie opening theme... in fact, i was a bit rememberred of "Predator"...

  • Impressionism is usually used for technological and ambient soundtracks, seeing as Metroid tends to go for that....well they tried impressionism, i mean i don't really hear the usual metroid style, not something you would hear in a game, but i think its a good rendition...

  • Hm... Given how good the rest of the symphony was, I'm pretty surprised by this. It's not bad, but it's just... odd how it's not very Metroid. Hell, it's like the composer tried to channel Other M's music, which is definitely NOT a good thing.

  • Is the first part supposed to be Donkey Kong? That's what it says...

  • Metroid where? The song is nice, ok, BUT NO METROID.

  • it was pretty bad actually, I rather listen to the super metroid OST or even metroid prime than this...expected better from an entire orchestra. :(

  • Only identified Samus' theme >_>

  • One of the guys in the choir looks like Harry Potter. XD

    That aside, love this piece. Not quite sure about a couple of the themes, but I recognized others... but then, I've only played the Prime games. ^_^;

  • when does it start sounding like metroid?

  • I'm amazed at how bad this one was when all the others were so good. I heard maybe 10 seconds of something that sounded like Kraid's theme near the end, and then that weird-ass minor key version of the Main theme in the last 40 seconds. Other than that, I couldn't recognize a single piece of Metroid music, and I have a very good ear and memory for music. Metroid has so many memorable and energetic themes, and they used none of them.

    Very odd.

  • It sounds pretty good as a whole orchestra but I don't think it caught the feel of Metroid at all. Metroid music is either fast paced or slow and ambient...this was slow and dramatic. I couldn't make out like any of the original tunes aside from the Ridley theme and Samus's theme (which in my opinion was the only Metroid-ish sounding part in this). The Ridley part was watered down, drawn out too long, and overall just was overshadowed by everything else.

  • having heard the super mario galaxy suite,I was very enthusiastic when I saw this, and alas was even more disappointed. The only part that I liked was the end with samus' theme,I still get the picture of her possibly being tortured by mother brain whenever I here this. And sadly enough, the zelda suite was just as disappointing, with still more original song and less letting the themes we know and love come to life. I really dont want to hear a song with the metroid title when it really isnt metroid

  • I think it's very good musically, but I have to agree that I don't really hear much by way of metroid until very late in the video..sort of disappointing, really.

  • Seems that the arranger definetely likes Elliot Goldenthal, Stravinsky and others more than the acutal composer :-D

  • The reason we're not hearing Metroid themes in it is because they aren't the ones we would expect to hear. I hear the Aurora Battle from MP3 for instance, I think, a tune or two from the NES metroid, Fusion, Ridley's theme (heavily orchestrated and in swing tempo).

  • Ridley's theme @ 5:05 Its a bit slowed down than what you hear in the games though.

  • Frankly, I don't recognize any metroid theme in this. Well at 6:16 there is something. But it doesn't even last to 6:30. Then there is a bit singing that sounds a bit like the metroid theme and that's it. WTF?

  • I don't hear anything that sounds like Metroid until 6:12

  • well ok, but where's the metroid music in this?

  • Im pretty sure this isn't the metroid suite.

  • I never really understood what the point of the conductor was, if the people playing the instruments don't know when to come in then why are they even playing the song?

  • @CaptainNooodles They do know when to come in dumbass. Trust me. I'm a musician. This is just one of those songs where its all crazy and unpredictable.

  • @AgentStark427 Well there was no real need to call me a dumbass, it was just a question

  • @CaptainNooodles Well, Im one of those guys who you really dont want to piss off.

  • @AgentStark427 Fair enough, I hope I didn't piss you off sorry :D

  • @CaptainNooodles Why are you apologizing? You just asked a simple question. I'm sure the role of the conductor is confusing to a lot of people who aren't musicians. College kids talking trash on the internet are a dime a dozen. There's nothing to be afraid of. It's supposed to be part of the fun, after all.

  • @AgentStark427 And the comments section just gets classier and classier. Why not lay on more idle threats? I'm sure it will make someone respect you... one day.

  • Any place to download the full video for this? Instead of all the part files.

  • The only thing that I recognized was the tourian theme.. and the galactic warrior slightly near the end. Everything seemed like it was out of place..

  • Is there a reason this is labeled "Donkey Kong Country" at 0:18?

  • @nommable I thought I commented about that first until I saw your comment.

  • @nommable

I think it was meant to display what the previous song played is / was. I was a bit confused myself, but either the guy that prompts the screen to tell everyone of the upcoming song is smoking fucking crack, or what I just started us out with on this comment is how it is being done.

  • Alas Germany, my Gothic brethren, you are fantastic with your art, but however you can be too experimental sometimes. This composition failed to grasp the emotion with Metroid. True the music is ment to have a fearful feeling to it, but the music also must feel exciting, like an adventure!

  • What a disappointment... D:

  • what's with these unrecognizable and ostentatious arrangements?

  • I was so excited to see this. As a huge Metroid fan, I expected an incredible performance. What I got was something that's utter crap and completely unrecognizable. I apologize, but this was just completely disappointing. I only recognized about 10% of it. The rest, I had no idea... and I'm a HUGE fan of the music of Metroid. I missed the live broadcast of this and I was mad about that. I'm not mad anymore. In fact, I'm happy that I didn't waste my time. Video Games Live is the way to go.

  • @WiiGamin92 video games live is the fast food way of video game music. it's nice, easy, and you recognize all the themes instantly. this metroid fantasy is a work of art and dares to be complex. the harmonies often are far from traditional and there's always a feeling of angst, but also resilience. that said, i like both the video games live and this approach, they are simply different.

  • Great performance, terrible arrangement. Sounds good on its own, but when compared to anything Metroid... you hardly get any of that. I like the idea, but Rasch should've infused more Metroid and taken less liberties...

  • Are you sure this is Metroid?

  • Absolutely terrible, as a huge Metroid fan I am very disappointed with this. It was a complete and utter mess and when you compare it to Zelda and Galaxy's performances...I really don't know what they were trying to do here.

I could make out Tourian, the Super Metroid fanfare and that was about it. Overall a very very poor performance and it was nothing on Videogames live!

  • This is terrible.

  • Maybe if it wasn't so discordant in style, the super metroid might have sounded actually good.

  • what a disaster ...all the other suits were very cool but this one sounded awful :( very disappointed

  • the only disappointing part of the concert...

Lower Norfair? Oder irgendwas, das ich kenne?" :/

    Das ist wirklich NICHT gut.

  • Why could i, a die hard Metroid fan, hardly even recognise any of the Metroid themes?

VGL's Metroid suite was also a letdown, compared to their amazing Castlevania medley.

Is there something about all orchestral Metroid arrangements having to be as obscure as possible?

  • Eff you Germany, this is an insult to Metroid.

  • Comment removed

  • Oh no....I missed it.... again... -.-

  • Love it, hearing a choir sing norfair is pretty exciting! Feels like I'm watching a Metroid movie. I like that it's fairly interpretive, good job!

  • What a waste of an opportunity to make a beautiful Metroid suite.

  • Metroid meets 2001 - A Space Odyssey maybe. It's nice to let the composer flex their muscles once in a while, as far as variations go this is some very nice work with Super Metroid. But I still wish they had let the themes come to fruition in a familiar, less melodramatic way.

  • This concert was a GREAT idea, so don't get me wrong, but I didn't get much out of this song. The suite was definitely written as more dissonant than anything, but it only sounded like Metroid to me for maybe 20 seconds. Oh well.

  • That fucker didnt even wanted to do a metroid composition. Fuck him.
