  • There are two things I love about this video;

    1) It's my favourite DnB beat.

    2) It's not a drum machine.

  • i am not a drummer but i really like his music

  • JoJo made God in his image...

  • Is that Tony Royster Jr. at the end saying "Amazing!" ?

  • @undeknifable

    Thats Spanky McCurdy

  • I'm sure that this film is speed up!!!! ;D...

  • oh my god.

  • If a squirrel could drum, this is what it would sound like (speed wise).

  • the human drum machine :)

  • it looks sped up :'(

  • The guy is beyond great. He's from another solar system... Thx, JoJo for your art, your work, and your professionalism...

  • And people think beatboxing is cool?

  • Propably the only video in youtube that has over 60 000 views and only one dislike and for reason!

  • he would be awesome as a drum and bass liveact :)

  • @djexpanium google jojo mayer & the nerve

  • The bass drum sounds kinda bad imo, but JoJo would probably shit all over most drummers even if he played on trash cans.

  • @wowrazzor the video camera recorded the sound, i wouldn't expect it to be that good sound quality.

    amazing solo

  • @Waxmess

    Point taken :) I agree.

  • @wowrazzor I think 'cause it was a booth he had to keep it compact, but still have his signature cymbal setup, which still give him that classic JoJo sound. It's more of a show of talent than a showcase for the kit.

  • I would pay a lot of money for a "Jojo Mayer covers Aphex Twin and Autechre" Cd.

  • どうやったらこんなに速く手が動くんだろう

  • someone arrest this man on charges of rape

  • some drum solos you listen to, you get bored within 30 seconds because all the drummer is doing is moving around as fast as he can as loud as he can

not the case with jojo mayer. every second, you're craving for more.

  • Sometimes i think i'm decent on drumming... then i watch a video of Jojo

  • 1:25 What a transition....

  • 1 guy plays the flute.

  • I wanna watch an old fashioned balls to the wall solo to bash my head, and now for some reason I want some ecstasy instead

  • how can he say he doesnt really use the push pull technique?!?!!? hes using it nearly CONSTANTLY here!!!

  • @drummerman55

i have seen him in videos demonstrating so I assumed he used it alot.

  • @ariesram74 yeah but in his vids he says "i dont really use this technique much" :D

  • All I can say is, practice perfectly all of the "boring and stupid" stuff as much as you can possibly handle. rinse repeat. noodle just enough to keep it mildly fun. you all will become good if not great drummers. :)

  • Since we know EVERYONE here (including myself) wants his chops, I'll say something different. I WANT THAT SHIRT!

  • @IPstixrawesume lmao

  • Jojo "ghost note" Mayer

  • Man...wow. Amazing.

  • che dinamiche che tecnica che gusto

  • It's really dangerous to take pictures in front of Jojo. He might blow away your cameras with his super-fast rolls.

  • Nice!

  • WHAT TIPE ( SORRY I DONT SPEAK GOOD INGLISH ) SNARE IS THAT x3 ??? LOVE IT (:

JOJO IS LKE THE KING OF THIS (:

  • God... i love Joey Jordison and Travis Barker!!!!............... LOL totally kidding, theyre a freakin joke compared to Jojo.

  • @nintendorox5

Travis. I love going in any youtube videos, be it cooking or how to repair a dishwasher and saying Travis for no reason.

  • And after 100 times of winding up watching this vid..... I'm still absolutely blown away/mesmerized. What a master.

  • Holy crap! Mayer is amazing. Possibly the most inventive and unique drummer alive.

  • What is Jojo doing with both feet on the pedal? Hes fucking amazing

  • @west336699 he is muting the bass drum with his foot to change the sound.

  • @absolutezero6 the foot thing was him putting pressure on the bass head to make the pitch higher, same thing happens when you a tighten a head, more pressure, higher pitch.

  • Did you see when he started making different bass drum tones with his foot???? GOOD GOD!

  • His cymbalas here are epic, anyone know what they are?

  • (left to right)

    13'' fierce hats

    18'' el sabor picante crash

    8'' sabian chopper

    21'' fierce ride

    18'' fierce crash

someone correct me if i'm mistaken

  • thanks man!

  • Comment removed

  • @iwant2piece

Isn't it a 10" he's using normally?? i was trying to find out when i tripped over this :D

Just ordered the el sabor picante hand + AAX-treme chinese today.

And i got the fierce series and a gift card so i can buy chopper. :D! but size hmm? people say the 10" is perfect. Not to heavy. and not to fast.

    Truely sweat cymbals.

  • hm, maybe, not my cup of tea, i never liked them choppers.

if i had to, i'd buy the largest in size i could.

  • His signature sticks are the best!

  • 2:35-2:45 Jojo Goes Gospel Chops! LOL

  • more like Chaffee chops .

  • @PositivelyBored hahahaha

  • I'm twice better

  • Yeah you're right - I do it for breakfast. What does this guy think? :P Like he's good or something :) I'm sth about 4 times better - so let's battle man! :P

  • ahaha

    yeah man let's battle!!!

  • @Goocek

    hahaha;)

  • do you think times goes slower for him?

  • 0:32 is very nice. :)

  • 1:00 look at his freaking snare hand, look at it, that's ridiculous. Way too fast.

  • good job!

  • You know that he is good when this is the only video on you tube without a row going on in the comments. lol Nothing to debate really just amazing playing.

  • @fibbsabaddy

great point. Only a complete tard will come in and say TRAVIZ OWNZ DIS DUDE :D

  • I'm telling you, these stupid Barker fans are everywhere. No matter what drummer you go to, some idiot Barker fan comes out of nowhere and starts trash talking. They're so dumb it's getting really funny.

  • @DCussen I know I have a neighboor at university who is like that and thinks Travis barker is the greatest drummer ever. Fuckin' annoying..Jojo mayer, Buddy Rich, John Bonham are my favourites

  • questo è folle!!!!

  • Guy makes me wanna give up drums and hang myself.

  • amen

  • thats the problem. hes not trying to show off, showing what you can do with drums. its supposed to make you want to try harder.

  • I know. I suck ass really

  • @grandmasterdeafchild Give the man his props, but never give up

  • @grandmasterdeafchild You have a guaranteed view on that video response right here. I JEST OF COURSE. =P

  • @grandmasterdeafchild The only difference between him and you, provided you have a natural sense of rythm, is desire, countless hours in the woodshed, and lots of professional playing experience. When I see guys like this, it reinforces that I can do it too and inspires me to play.

  • @cbfeeling Wise words. He's got more drive oh yeah that's for sure.

  • @grandmasterdeafchild Lol Dude! I feel the same :(

  • @grandmasterdeafchild

he should motivate to go and study 24/7

  • @grandmasterdeafchild he is one of the reasons why I Play drums

  • É muito incentivador ver Jojo tocar!

    great!

  • that wasn't his best solo ..

  • The peice is really cool. I wish the video for it was still up.

  • i envy your skill JOJO.......

  • ya its Far

  • SICK

  • i think he is playing "Far"..he usually plays this w/ Nerve..

    ya.cool stuff..

  • He's playing jabon. A Nerve song that you should look up because theres a drum solo at the end and it ROCKS!!

  • its not jabon. i dont know the name of it but its the song he uses the remo marching pad on. but he adds some of his other solos in it like the solo when he performed at bath university. there might be some licks from jabon though.

but hecks yes the solo at the end of jabon is possibly the best solo i have heard!

  • I know for a fact that the beat is mostly jabon because of the begining beat and the part where he goes from floor tom to cymbal, it's exactly jabon right there. And the beat is too fast. Plus, he and most drummers-if not all- switch up the solos, which is probably why you think it's far.

  • it called Far i believe

  • he is a genius

  • Umm if you're implying Jojo is Middle Eastern, he Swiss.

  • the best left hand i have ever seen - amazing technique - BUT he can groove like mad (that's the real key, man!). JoJo rules - I only want hear more & more!!!

  • innit. left hand is GODLIKE. Its cos he trained as a jazzer. All the best did...ok not completely true but yeah INSANE. WE LOVE YOU JOJO.

  • allstar de foguinho

  • I would give alot to just talk to him one on one. That's all I want. Just a convo....

  • with traditional grip fingers are placed from the fulcrum to the stick tip. in matched, reverse. traditional: therefore it's harder to "choke" the stick from bouncing and that sounds better on snare. matched: small and ring finger easily choke the stick and that (may) sound better on cymbals. my name is Tyanne Chianne Rhamdhanne and this is the truth about matched and traditional grip.

  • buck, derk derk alah, derka derka, muhammud jihad, haka sherpa sherpa, a backala...just kidding thanks for the info :)

  • hahah muting the bass drum with the left foot... that's a new one

  • Everybody give it up For Jojo Mayer!!! Tastefully accomplished...

  • Is it just me that thinks he looks like the French guy from Ocean's 12, aka "The Nightfox"? :) (btw I know JM is Swiss.)

He's simply amazing at what he's doing. Plus, he's very nice too. I was emailing him once, and he answered within 24h. It led to a rather nice discussion about music. He's a really cool dude.

  • vincent cassell you mean.

    I don't think so.

  • Yeah man that's awesome. I emailed him once asking for some advice on band troubles. He replied the next morning, and like you said, he's really nice (considering how busy he is). He is so casual and real about things, kinda like talking to a close friend.

He is (along with Akira Jimbo) my biggest and best influence in drumming and musical approach ever.

  • @oabrahamsson Same here, he was very kind and casual and always replies to emails. Very appreciative of his fans.

  • i wonder if he practices this or if he just improv's as he goes.

  • I think he practices individual pieces and then improvises putting them together when he plays. for instance the "echo snare" he does at the beginning I've heard in a couple of his videos, and some of the fills I've heard before

  • put it this way, every 4 beats is a sentence, and he practices the words, but he improvs the sentence.

  • What.

    Practice time.

  • drumming idol

If i could be just like that that would be cool but i hit too hard to play with that much finnese

  • Dude, Jojo Mayer in an interview said you should stay true to yourself and that you should see your weaknesses as strengths. If you are hard-hitting, then just rock out man, if your heart is is in it then it will sound good.

  • he never stops to amaze me

  • he really is an amazing drummer. my niece audrey 6yrs old was so amazed with his talent. he really makes my niece more interested in playing drums more. thanks for sharing your talent to those who are inspired by you.

  • Though I do not like this style of music. I really like the playing of Jo Jo Mayer. He plays DnB beats on a real kit, and that is very hard to do. Good stuff.

  • I hear ya man hes sick but it be wicked hard to incorporate that into a rock groove

  • Well it's really more breakbeats, or "techno-esque" stuff. It wouldn't really go into rock because that's not what he's going for.

But I agree, he's WICKED insane.

  • AAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!more than perfect

  • i like how if you watch his hands you can see almost all the techniques he teaches in his video. so good though for real!!!

  • Is he for real? Noboby can be this good!

  • he's untrouchable! a god among lowly human drummers!

  • Why when he does rimshots his drumstick is reversed

  • because the sound is better

  • thanks

  • The stick its reversed for rim-shots because he plays trad grip. So when he picks the stick up its in trade position.

  • what pedal is jojo using, it seems so smooth?

  • he uses some kind of special sonor pedal where unlike most pedals that have the spring located on the right, his is located on the left presumably allowing him to slide his foot on and off the footboard on the right side of the pedal. probably so he can do some kind of heel/toe technique without having to kick the chain of the pedal everytime he does it. i think the pedal is probably a custom thing.

  • What's the difference between Sabian and Zildjian in terms of sound? I only found Zildjian a bit more complex in the sound, Sabian is a bit more splashy and crashy, but that's about it, anyone got more feel than this?

  • sabian sound more modern to me

  • It depends on what you like to play and how you play it. I personaly think Zildjian is better because it has a fuller sound and it just feels natural to me. Its good for classic rock/metal. Sabian is more of a short fast sound used in hard rock and pop (which is what is most liked these days). Also if you are still on the fence about it look up Kzildjains. There Zildjian cymbals but they are thinner and have more tin in them making them a bit splashier. Hope I helped!

  • I used to wear those "flaming" shoes. Extremely comfortable.

Yeah. I used to wear the clothing of Jojo Mayer. Be jealous.

  • word up chomps.

  • All Chuck tayors are comfy! :)

  • noone has chops like this guy. like who could pull this stuff off other than him? maybe some marching maniac but that takes away a foot & groove

  • I know this is maybe a stupid question..anyway, does somebody knows what brand is that green/black shirt?? or where I can buy it? Thank you all.

  • Yea BOi!

  • When he used his left foot to change the kick sound, I cried. Jojo always amazes me.

  • That made me die a little on the inside.

  • 1:53 lol so basic i love it

  • amazing

  • His left hand...

  • Whats the size of the side snare drum... so tight sound I crapped my pants, and that pedal... looks like Pearl foot board combined with dw pedal

  • Looks like an 8x4 from the other vids.

  • 10 by something, no 8 you moran

  • ITS THE SONAR JUNGLE SNARE! IT'S A 10x2 OR 10x3! IT'S BASICALLY A TAMBOURINE WITH SNARE HEADS ON THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF IT WITH SNARE WIRES ON THE BOTTOM!

  • "SONOR" lol

  • it's 10x2 :)

  • Awesome drumsolo!

That little breakdown part @ 1:57 was cool! =)

  • jojo is an all sonor guy......................and he is what i look up in the drumming field that is

  • man he's a beast..and there was spanky on the side...another beast in his own right.

  • what kind of pedal is he using???

  • axis longboards i think

  • that is DEF not an axis pedal, looks like the slave of a dw 8000.

  • Duuuh to both of you, he is using sonor giantstep pedals

  • Fraid not, it would be nice to think so to explain his radical ability, but it turns out it is hard application and learning.

He still uses on old sonor pedal, strap driven with a footplate.

Can't remember digits, but go to his website and there is a breakdown

    rad heh?

  • I know that in his website he explains that he likes vintage pedals, but on this video he is using sonor pedals.

He is in a booth, so he must promote sonor drums AND hardware, how would it look if he promoted sonor hardware and he is playing with a vintage gretsch pedal?

  • Dudes, his site hasn't been updated in about 5 years; the old sonor pedal that he used to use fell apart AGES AGO.

for the past 3-4 years he has been using a prototype that he built himself from parts of various other pedals, with the footplate and blue cam from a pearl elim.

however, he is in the process of designing a pedal with a company (not sonor!)

  • Ya, jojo works so much that his flash site looks way dated. This guy is on top of the world, would someone please rebuild his site from the ground up with new media/forums/blogs. Jojo did what no other drummer in history has done. Prove drummer and machine can have synergy.

  • Amen, Brother :)

he deserves more than that pile of dated crap.

and MAN! a Jojo Mayer Forum we could really use one of those lol ;)

  • Its sad. The Nerve album was finished some time ago (like 3yrs or something) and his site has turned into an old pile of shit. Here is the answer- great websites dont pay the bills, but if JoJo created community on his site like Billy Ward- any product he produced would have a small army of backers buying/telling others about it. Its win win, but he does not have to be on the forum. Thats time draining. Someone send this to Jojo, I'll bet he does not even go on his site for anything.

  • Truest words that were ever typed man, ever since secret weapons, his popularity has shot WAY up, everyone's talking about him.

Really, we need a Jojo Mayer Commuity website/forum or something, but I'll bet any money he doesn't even remember that he has a website...

The nerve album was supposed to be released in like 04, but they've had "distribution issues" ever since, and every time I see him talking he always says it's gonna be out "really really soon..."

    *sigh*

  • thanx bro!!! just wondering!!! because at md fest 05 he was using a powershifter eliminator!!! lol and thank you for being nice about it!! there's not too much of that on youtube!!!

  • jojo is sick!! and i love how at the end you can see spanky mccurdy applauding him!

  • HolyGaleRyu, I'm with you on the the headlessness.

    AGGHGHGHGHGHGHHH

so simple.... but i can't fit it into a groove like he can!

    D:

  • check also the video @ "swiss beach 2008"

  • wats that thing he does with hes feet at 3.15

    hes godly

  • He's changing the tone of the kick it's pretty rad

  • 1:53

    My head exploded

  • Jojo is the best!

  • These days watching gospel chops videos i thought those guys were great but i still wondered if someone could bring up sth really new in terms of technique and sonority, After discovered jojo im quite sure that music and musicality has no limits at all!!

  • drum machines immitate him

  • is there some technique to doing rim clicks(cant remember what their actually called?) that fast?

  • If there isn't I'm sure Jojo has made one.

  • again i must say everything he does is all taste so fresh.....hands down hes at the TOP just like buddy rich was!!!

  • is this the force 3007 jungle kit?

  • Kann man sich nur Ehrfürchtig verneigen !!!!!
