    is from the audience

  • lmao im making a show with constant silence and saying nothing its hilarious XD

  • It's better like this. A bit David Lynch in parts.

  • Proving again how we are all under mass hypnosis.

  • A big part of comedy is timing. With the video torn up like this the timing is destroyed.

  • the way the video skips is siezure inducing

  • I didnt laugh that much, but, I laughed pretty hard when she reveals Leonard Nimoy wiped his face with the napkin.

  • I got to be honest, after having enough of the laughter in the episodes and then seeing this video, the audience gives the show more lift. It's just plain dull and boring without them. The audience is still fake to me though.

  • @sessi0000 totally agree... the laughing track/audience in the shows annoys the shit out of me but after watching this I see how much life it gives to the show... still too loud tho

  • Especially in this episode, you'd have to see the whole episode to get some of the jokes in this clip.

  • why is it mirrored?

  • Every single bit of produced media has ambient and background sound effects. You don´t notice them when the´re there but you notice it when the´re gone, complete silence is always going to be awkward. So... this experiment will not work unless you edit some ambience/room tone/background noise/foly sound effects :)

  • @SirPshycoSexy You'd also have to edit out the weird pauses while the actors waited for the audience to stop their laughter.

  • idk how they keep acting without and laughter...

  • This video is soooooo quiet.

  • Jesus, this watches like a Pinter play now.

I guess most laugh-track sitcoms sans laugh-track would, but this seems especially Pinteresque because so many of Sheldon's lines are bizarre non sequiturs.

  • @Nkerklaan This must needs be a top comment. Immediately.

  • Damned if I didn't actually laugh because of those horrible, awkward silences.

  • the best part 2:50 lmaoooooooooooo..

  • the missing laugh track doesn't hurt the jokes, it's the fact that many of the jokes in this scene are running gags throughout the episode, so they don't make sense unless you saw the whole episode.

  • Why is this video mirrored?

  • @edml95 It's a copyright thing.

  • He hugs like Voldemort.

  • Is the video mirrored?? the room is different.

  • thats because most if not all sitcoms have been leaving a second or two after lines for laughter for decades... our brains are just used to it so it doesn't seem like there's actually extra time, until u get rid of the laughter... lol

  • I still like it without the laughter, it's just filled with awkward silences that makes it seem broken...

  • @sarahlunaslim thats because most if not all sitcoms have been leaving a second or two after lines for laughter for decades... our brains are just used to it so it doesn't seem like there's actually extra time, until u get rid of the laughter... lol

  • Who here noticed that it is mirror flipped?

  • apparently , awkward = funny

  • This is like watching a group of school geeks being held in a zoo pen for all the cool kids to laugh at. With the odd weak reference to nerd culture delivered via a violent jab in the ribs and a punchline screamed at the audience's face with all the subtlety of a school pantomime. But everyone's different, some find that funny.

  • it sounds like dead air moments without at least ambient noise and the characters natural scoffs and what not.. but I get the point of this. The laughtrack is key for the show.

  • This episode must take place in the mirror universe.

  • I still found it funny. More so if anything because I could actually hear the punchline to the joke.

  • what a cute hug

  • so bad without the laughter

  • Funny how the Office idiots don't notice that show too has a gimmick. You know what the Office would be like without the nauseating constant zoom-in/zoom-out of the camera every 2 seconds? The awkward silences would be DEAFENING.

Trust me, The Office (and anything with Steve Carell in it) is about as low-brow as they come.

  • i'm brainwashed...i hear the laughter in my mind

  • It is real laughter!! It is sitting people there and laughing behind the camera!!

  • @MrThaSara Oh, you poor, poor soul...

  • Wow.

    It's even less funny now.

    That's like, almost impressive.

  • this was my favourite part of big bang theory ever

  • Do you people understand that it doesn't matter is it canned laughter or "live" laughter? You hear it because the studios know that shows wouldn't be funny without them. And they're right! In fact, it's so NOT funny without laughter that it becomes funny because of it. Some of you may find this still funny (although much less than with laughter) but that is only because you watched it for so long and are conditioned to it. Really, watching this video it's clear the show sucks, except Sheldon.

  • Thank You!!!

  • sheldon's hug is more awkward than voldemorts

  • this is not true because if u watch any blooper reels specifically the latest 1 youll see they have an audience

  • 1:37 to 1:38 what the hell?

  • @MusikCity1 Yeah, I thought the same thing...

  • actually it's not the laughtrack it's actually cuz there's nothing from before to build it up..

  • soooo trippy seeing it mirrored

  • This reminds me drama classes when i was 13 years old

  • What episode is This?

  • without laughter..it's kind of like a drama with no plot -___-

  • this makes you realize how good they are at acting.

  • @gifospd its still not one take

  • Wow. This really isn't funny, is it? Shame, I quite like it.

  • im laughing in the background, thats all I hear :D

  • fuck i've seen this so many time that i still hear the laugher in the back of my head

  • weird, its no as funny

  • interesting to see, thanks

  • i dont care if it isnt in front of the studio. it is fucking funny

  • wow, when i watched this with the laughing, i laughso hard... i didnt even giggle when i saw this...

  • wow, when i watched this with the laughing, i laughso hard... i didnt even giggle when i saw this...

  • wow really fort this was a whole new appartment until seeing comment

  • not funny.

  • this is like a fucking drama without the laughs

  • @MAUROtele lol

  • Hey, look! It's not so funny anymore.

  • i know have a new found respect for laughtracks.

  • hahaha nope still funny!

  • The reason why BBT takes so much flack for using a canned track is because the laughter they use is often a genuine audience response which is louder than an actual laugh track.

  • you realise it isn't a secret that it's in front of a studio audience right? where do you think the laughs come from?

  • The Office idiots always forget that the Office replaces the laughtrack with an equally poorly executed gimmick: shaky cams and nauseating repetitive zoom-ins/zoom-outs every half a second.

And they bitch like they were the first show to not use a laughtrack as if that's some stroke of fucking genius that magically makes a garbage show funny. Har.

  • I thought it was actually funny without the laughter. Infact, it seemed that it was edited to make the pauses seem more tense than they actually were.

  • Wow, I don't watch this show, so when I see this clip, it just looks desperate and sad without the laugh track.

  • Part of what makes this so awkward is that the sound is completely muted when the laughter is cut out without the "non-talk sounds" from people and the background noises.

  • This is funnier when your stoned.

  • Still funny, and adorable!

  • haha its just so awkward

  • I think it is funnier in this way

  • LOOL

  • the room is rearragned weirdly

  • @beanbaggy1 Yes, because the screen was flipped around to avoid copyright issues.

  • Wow, this is awful. Not your video, but the idea that they do this on the set.

  • wow you can actually feel the awkward...

  • i still liked it.

    Awkward hug to everyone!

  • i still liked it.

    awkward hug to everyone!

  • Omg Bridget from 8 Simple Rules! :)

  • I love Sheldon! He's adorablee! <3

  • OH MY GOD I AM SO BORED. no wonder i have never watched this show and cut my cable. Back to reading books and visiting comics on stage! darn diddly

  • This is one of my favorite scenes from big bang. Even without bg laughter it still shows how sweet penny's gift to sheldon is

  • seems so quiet!

  • I still laughed :P. I want an awkward hug from Sheldon Cooper. All Big Bang fans need to watch the Muppets movie...just because it's amazing :D.

  • i dont know who twould think ur an idiot, sounds cool to me

  • No sitcoms are funny without laughter machines.

  • @sangolt88 It's a live audience

  • this is just wierd watching it reverse

  • Without the laughter, "I Possess The DNA Of Leonard Nimoy" is real creepy.

  • I don't understand what's wrong with having bg laugher. Without, it's like watching a comedy theatre play alone in the audience. It's about group experience. It enhances it and makes it better.

  • @teemue television is an exaggeration of the social cues of laughter, smiling faces and attention-grabbing action - what it's really giving you is the junk food equivalent of a group experience. It's fun and it feels good to watch it, though, so it's probably fine - it's not like anyone turned out weird or socially awkward from having TV as their only interest

  • What's wrong with the apartment?

  • Reversing fucked me right up

  • This is depressing.

  • Since it's filmed in front of a live audience, it's extra awkward. You'll have to cut out absolutely ALL the sounds between the lines, which makes it as unnatural as this. Just keep that in mind, it's not this tense on set.

  • super dramatic

  • Why did you duplicate the ''Leonard nemoy '' phrase instead of using the original?

  • every sitcom would be like this. they always pause for laugh tracks

  • pennys tits look huge

  • So this is why real life is never entertaining! It needs a laugh track! :P

  • the apartments on the wrong side!!!

i cant watch it is just wrong! D:

  • love it! 1:37 --- leanord nemoy

  • All the awkward pauses.

  • @caroou92 I imagine there must be a lot of those when you talk to Sheldon...

  • I love Sheldon. He is so cute and innocent like a child.

  • still funny haha!

  • Haha it's terrible without the laughter lol. But I still love TBBT regardless! :D

  • this is weird as shit

  • It's just not the same!

  • Wow, this is better than east enders acting

  • This kinda looks like a drama without the audience.

  • @babyfacedstar thats because they dont speak where there are normally laughs, and it sounds weird..

  • I would advise all of you to watch the special features of season 4, you will see they actually DO NOT use a laugh track and they DO act in front of a live audience, just because they edit out the sound of the laughter doesn't mean it was on a track...

  • I think were beyond laugh tracks, i really dont get why we need them. To be honest i dont see why we ever needed them. I like this show btw and other that have a laugh track just think its kind of useless.

People this is meant to be a joke, he obviously didnt think anyone would think this is the show without a laugh track.

  • @mrfuzzer1 some shows don't have room in studio to perform in front of a live audience. This is the case with How I met Your Mother. THey use so many sets and flash back and fourth in and episode so much that it makes more since to just use a laugh track. It also depends on how many cameras a show uses. A multi-camera show uses A live audience, becasue the mutiple cameras record the crowd audio and they can layer the laughter better on the show.

  • @mrfuzzer1 a single camera show, has to use a laugh track, because all the coverage of a scene is shot with one camera. This means an audience would have to watch the same scence many, many, many times, while each character delivers their lines to camera seperalty. And shows that use audience still use tracks to suppliment a crowds reaction to a joke. And of course some shows don't use a track or audience, like The Office, or Scrubs, or 30 rock. Hope this helped.

  • What a lot of people don't realize is the "awkward pauses" wouldn't be there if there was no live audience, they stop to let the laughs happen so people can hear the lines on the actual show. If you don't know the show, as a lot of comments prove they don't, it's easy to just say it's not funny. Actually watch.

  • This must have been so akward to act in. It is just strange and kinda creepy

  • Having sat through many tapings, the live studio audience is alive and well. It takes about 3 hours to film one 23 minute show...and it does get tedious but still fun. You're also way up high looking into a stage.

  • I laughed at several points in this vid, and the one the vid linked to. guess the show is funny without the laugh track.

  • I still managed to laugh at sheldons overeaction

  • i miss the laughs... :(

  • this is too weird.

  • Leonards in Sheldons spot with it flipped

  • actually my cousin dated the indian guy (i kid you not) and she visited the set a lot and she told me that they do have a live audience but they dont actually watch the whole show, just parts of it because it would get really boring as they have to film a lot of takes and the same scene multiple times, what they will do is bring in an entertainer or something along those lines and when it is time to laugh or ooh or ahh the entertainer will notify them

  • @gje328 LOL

  • 0:52 - just after, you hear a slight intake of breath from the audience indicating where the video was edited

  • the hug looks like rape lol

  • One has to keep in mind that, the studio audience laughter fills in the silences and awkward moments, very much like movie/tv/game soundtracks do. Try editing out the soundtrack from any movie and see if it's still any good.

Family Guy would still be funny though...

  • Without the sound it's geeky nerds with a hot chick conversing in an eerily awkward conversation made more unsettling by the quite noticeable pauses...it's like I'm dead inside not having their laughter.

  • I haven't seen the episode, but I still laughed. I guess I'm not a goldfish. Time to throw away my television.

  • yes sheldon you poses the dna of lenord newmoy

  • Most of the reason this isn't funny anymore is because it's out of context... and the total silence seems totally awkward without laughter

  • lol 1:37 bad editing

  • You couldn't do this to Sanford and Son. God Bless Vintage TV.

  • Has someone done this to Seinfeld?

  • So weird. Somehow it isn't funny without the laughs.

When thinking about all those videos where people comment how annoying they think the laughs are, without them it's much worse!!!

Thanks for making this video, it really puts things into perspective.

  • Not the same....

  • aquire hug

  • wow how do ppl still not laugh, i lol`d so hard all through out the video, like i said on another video like this, it just feels werid to laugh with no one else in the background, but the big punch lines are still jokes, and the minor ones are not funny like they usually are not

  • How does anyone find this funny? It's marginally better with the laugh track because it fills that awkward silence where I'm not laughing, so that I can pretend I found it amusing.

  • funny you can notice the pauses they would do for audience laughter

  • wow it sounds really boring the laughs make a big diference hahaha

  • wow it sounds really boring the laughs make a big diference hahaha

  • you shifted the room... lol

  • Still funny.

  • This is how I talk with people all the time.

  • SO WEIRD BBUT THANKS ANYWAY TO SHARING THIS

  • Yeah, I'm still laughing... The audience had nothing to do with it.

  • why is the apartment on the opposite site?

  • @andrea27ant flipped for copyright

  • @stevarino1989 nice im sure they wont notice.. xD

  • @andrea27ant Sheldons timetravel machine made them end up in a reversed universe

  • It's so weird without the laughter. Strange pauses in the middle of the conversation etc etc.

  • This is what the latest Red Dwarf was like... I know shows don't need laughter to let you know when a joke is coming, but with some it fits well.

  • Newsflash. The scene is funny with or without audience laughter. It's funny because of what Sheldon went through to get Penny the right gift, his reaction to his gift, and what he gives her in return. Also, like people are saying, taking out the laughs completely throws off the timing of the dialogue.

  • TBBT is awesome

  • Maybe it's the changed timing...but wow, the show definetley loses it's humour like this.

  • creepy

  • i knew somthing was buging me. did you flip the image or somthing

  • Well.... what happen to the sound between the sentences then? Why the noise and background noise suddenly drop after each replica?

Sitcom crews behind the camera are allowed and even encouraged to laugh as they feel, that gives the actors feel of timing, not even that is audible here. If nobody reacted, the scene would be rewritten right on the spot.

I'm not saying that they don't add the laughter, but I do say (as a sound engineer) that the audio of this clip was altered.

  • Most American shows just aren't funny without the laugh tracks almost tricking you into thinking they are. You barely notice when the joke has come without the laughter... Stuff like the Inbetweeners is just funny in general.

  • I'd rather the audience in it

  • I've not seen this episode, and I still find this hilarious :P Don't watch the geek show and hate on it if you're not a geek!
