I actually liked this even though this game probbably isn't real.My favorite is Chrono Trigger because its in dragon ball(z and gt)art.So I was really bummed that SQUARE ENIX compleatly forgot it and started making it all Final Fantasy-like,which I don't like.So it would make me happy if Chrono Trigger became a series,but in its TRUE fashion.But again,good work!I just wish it wasn't in Final Fantasy art but thats just me expresing my opinion.
@GirlGamingManiac1 Since it appears you probably don't know, this was a fan project shut down by Square Enix when the game was 98% complete. They did this knowing that they would do nothing with the franchise. In other words, Square's reputation with Chrono Trigger/Cross fans is about as good as Capcom's current reputation with Mega Man fans.

@chrisliam2 Sorry to break it to you, but this game was only 98% complete before they got a cease and desist letter from Square Enix to stop all rom distribution and delete every other Square Enix related rom hack. The only thing they could keep was there CEMemorial YouTube channel. Saddly this never came to be.
y'know, I find it odd that it was C&D'd, considering they mention that it is a fan game, and that all the char. belong to Square-Enix, IN the game. What a load of shit. Anyway, looks nice. Hope there's still a version of it floating around somewhere on the net.
I guess things don't change in two years...a little sad, really. I wonder if it was the death of the Mega Man Legends 3 project that made me think of another game (that being this one) that got shut down after so much publicity (granted, relative to other fanworks), and thus brought me to want to poke around to see if anything somehow had changed. I guess it was a silly hope. But I like to think I can't be blamed for that. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, I'd hope.
If I might risk mentioning a personal opinion (God forbid those on the Internet, heh), after this incident and Final Fantasy 13 (which I just couldn't stand), and to a lesser degree Dissidia: Duodecim, I'm not far from giving up on Square(Enix) entirely. My fanhood started with Final Fantasy 7...will this be the end of it? It would be a shame. But if this is SquareEnix's true face (heh, FFX flashbacks), then I guess it just might have to be...
@BohepansTheThird What's wrong with Dissidia? I know, the story isn't great, but it isn't really the point of the game. But XIII really sucked compared to the rest of the series. I think the last really great game of the series was FFX, the last made by Squaresoft. The things that came later just weren't the same anymore. They don't make remakes either, although millions wish for it. AND if the fans are trying to make them themselves, they forbit it. Yes, I'm talking about Crono Resurrection.
Oh, I'm actually just fine with the storyline in Dissidia games. Some people might complain, but I was drawn right into it. (Maybe I'm easily entertained, heh.) Like I said, definitely to a lesser degree. Just, sometimes, I really get frustrated with fighting the AI. (And because I don't know anyone in my area that also plays Dissidia or Duodecim, multiplayer is no good. No AdHoc Party on my PS3, either - the WLAN Switch on my PSP is unfortunately broken.) That's all it is.
As for the FF series by itself, I will say that my favorite actually is FFX, so I can at least agree it was a great game. I admit that I was originally on the fence about FF12, struggling between what I agreed with and what I disagreed with. But ironically, FF13 saved it from borderline and actually made me like 12. Go figure on that one, heh. (Before 13, honestly, what FFs I had played, I honestly didn't think were overall bad. Not even FF8, and I couldn't stand Squall at all, at one point.)
@BohepansTheThird None of the FF's were really BAD games yet, some of them are with my favorite games of all time (FF5, FF9), not even XIII was a bad GAME in my opinion. It just really sucks balls because it has "Final Fantasy" win the title, and it doesn't deserves it. Even the fangame in the video above is more worthy of this title, although CT isn't even a part of the series. And, well, I haven't even played 12 yet, I can't say anything about it.
There is something called "copyright" to promote innovation, but there is also something called "fair use" that promotes innovation. Keyword, "innovation". Fair use is the reason why people on Youtube can upload AMVs but its also the reason why people can reverse engineer software.
Personally, Rom editing is the only time I really see the use of assembly. Assembly does't see much daylight these days especially when u got all these high level languages.

@cyberpsygen7 Do you have links or evidence? All I have ever read is conjecture and no evidence either way. Camp A will have you believe SE sent the letter, and can produce evidence of the letter. Camp B will have you believe a member of the team faked the letter, however they offer no evidence other than an accusation of a matching IP, if there is no real evidence it is likely a false accusation.
@nado2s they can NOT produce evidence of a real cease and desist, and square has never acknowledged making one. the main guy was super paranoid about getting sued and closed it down himself pre-emptively because he is a coward. when the flames of eternity team continued the project without him, his ego forced him to release his "true" vision. they also took their little forum private so you couldn't go in there and call him out on it anymore, so he could keep his little flock blind.

Man... When I read that you'd destroyed all the roms (I hope it's a lie) I felt like a part of me had dropped out of the Earth. Already I can see how much time, effort and love were put into this project. It breaks my heart for the creators to see it all go down the drain.
OK. I just watched this whole playthrough and now I'm watching it again. This game is great. You can really tell how much hard work the makers did to build this game. I can understand Square Enix wanting to protect their work, but shutting this down... It doesn't sit well in my stomach. At least we still have the videos. That way the memory of Crimson Echoes will live on.

hey i download an chrono trigger hack: Chrono Trigger - Flames of Eternity and now i stuck in this weird destroyed level cant remember the name. but why i stuck? also Crono has a attack called Thunder Sha and i cant fight all the enemys.
The former 'SquareSoft' is dead. The ones that made FF6 and tons of other awesome games, gone...the hollow shell of crap that's 'Square-Enix' just is content to churn out crappy Final Fantasy 'gaiden' games and sidequels and shitty MMOs that are so horribly broken they ended up waiving the monthly fee. Seems as if they made enough off the newcomers that they could afford to do that.

Flames of Eternity isn't a 'more complete' version, its based on an alpha version of this game. The 'FoE' creators took content from the creators of Crimson Echoes, and did so without permission or consent. The FoE people can all go DiaFF for all I care!
So please do take care never to assume that FoE is anywhere near the quality of CE. I actually played both, and there's no comparison :)
Techniqually it belongs to Square Soft and Enix had nothing to do with the production of the first or second (I think) of Chrono Trigger and as such, I think Square Soft should get the credit, not Enix.

I've got a problem with starting-up the game: when the cat says: "CHRONO'99:3..2..1.." I see the debug room for about a second and I don't see the character name choosing part. Everybody has got the standard names, like Crono is just named Crono. I've got CE-final.ips. Does anyone know how to solve this?
This can be considered a '99%' version, not 100%, so one of the things done was a 'quick and dirty' hack to bypass the debug room, thus also bypassing the naming perhaps. Its a minor quibble considering you're able to play what few people are able to play.
@jcdenton2k ye I think you're right. But i've found out how to give the characters custom names. You can either download a chrono trigger save file editor or just save the game. Then, when you've saved the game, you must start a new game. Then the windows pops up in which you can give the characters custom names. It's quite playable. If you're searching for a more complete version of the game you need to google for "flames of eternity".

I happen to have come across the leaked alpha, and it was a bit rough around the edges but definately showed potential. I then acquired the 98% leaked version shown here and I was blown away by how fantastic it was. Then of course, a kind soul managed to release the 'gold' release, newer than this version, January 2011, 99%. Fantastic, its a shame most won't get to play it.
If you wanna find it either use google or torrents, its out there already.
@jcdenton2k I have the leaked game now and I have to ask, are you sure it's even more complete than the videos shown here? It still showed the debug room but then went shortly to the Prologue without letting me alter the names or talk to those guys. Seems like it might be a 99% finished patch but I think we can only guess as the original team will probably never comment or confirm this on the leak in fear of legal action.

@PsychoKrazyTime come to think of it, my "oh so precious Square" started going downhill at 8. Square merging with Enix was bad for the traditional Square RPG because the company shifted focus to including platform and console gamers.
If I did beat this i would say it was true to the story. I'd also say how epic the story was. But since i've never played this game i'll just complain. I hated how emotional the game could get for long winded dialogue. I hated the amount of work it takes to enjoy this. Editing save games... Adding dialogue. WOW when somethings broken it's like gee "how does i edit gaym." I wish i could have been one of the few privileged to figure it out. But alas i'm dumb.

Easy way to get past the copy ight infrigment, change the name of the rom, repost it with a different alias, and alter the names by 1 letter, like turn chrono into Krono and make it like, krono flame or somthing and dont call it a rom hack xD its a loophole,

Well, Chrono Trigger isn't in stores anymore. It's from the SNES era, so needless to say, there'd be no sales to decrease.
But of course I assume you're referring to the DS remake. I guess that's a possibility, but Chrono Trigger DS was an enhanced remake. I mean, the only way to play the new content is to purchase that, or download that ROM.
Well, from Square's POV, you could argue that fans had two options: take basically a port of the original SNES with some extra features, or a fan-made 'true' sequel to a loved game. So Square probably thought that people would go to this than their DS version. I know I would play CE in a heartbeat over the port.

squareEnix didn't just pick on CE, their famous letter demanded the removal of ALL hacks, and even prohibit the teaching of other people to hack the game. From these demands I'd venture that they just don't want people (which is to say the fans) be near any hacks at all.

I think the game looks great, but there's alittle too much stuff in it. Its becoming too big and might topple upon itself. I think JudgeSpear left to work on a smaller, more Mario-only fan game. I keep wanting to make games with Lunar, but I keep hesitating for some reason.

Chrono Resurrection was shut down because it was a remake of Chrono Trigger not approved by Square Enix. Crimson Echoes was shut down because it was a ROM hack. I think Crimson Echoes should have been built on the Chrono Resurrection engine, that way we would have the the 3D Chrono Trigger sequel Square Enix would've never let us have. Anyone else agree?
Well, you can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the makers of Resurrection were attempting to profit from it. Like it was a whole new game that they wanted to sell. It was well within Square's rights, and perhaps best interest to discontinue that. But ROM hacks like Shiny Gold, or the Mother 3 Translation, among others weren't shut down, and I don't see why Square saw fit to stop this one. I can't comprehend why a non profit tribute to one of Square's games could be a threat.
No, no, no. I'm well aware that they were made by different companies. What I don't understand is why Square cares so much about ROM hacks when other companies don't. I guess my wording before was kind of off ^_^; But yeah, I never was under the assumption that mother or pokemon were Square's property. Just baffled why they went to this extreme when other companies left their high profile ROM hacks alone.
It seems as if Sqaure-Enix specifically does not want any kind of "Chrono Trigger" related software being made, probibly for the single reason that they are in development of one already and want it to be new and exciting to the public and the fans, maybe they don't want anyone stealing there thunder perhaps?

The only thing they could keep was there CEMemorial YouTube channel. Saddly this never came to be.

I guess things don't change in two years...a little sad, really. I wonder if it was the death of the Mega Man Legends 3 project that made me think of another game (that being this one) that got shut down after so much publicity (granted, relative to other fanworks), and thus brought me to want to poke around to see if anything somehow had changed. I guess it was a silly hope. But I like to think I can't be blamed for that. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, I'd hope.

My fanhood started with Final Fantasy 7...will this be the end of it? It would be a shame. But if this is SquareEnix's true face (heh, FFX flashbacks), then I guess it just might have to be...

@BohepansTheThird What's wrong with Dissidia? I know, the story isn't great, but it isn't really the point of the game. But XIII really sucked compared to the rest of the series. I think the last really great game of the series was FFX, the last made by Squaresoft. The things that came later just weren't the same anymore. They don't make remakes either, although millions wish for it. AND if the fans are trying to make them themselves, they forbit it. Yes, I'm talking about Crono Resurrection.

Oh, I'm actually just fine with the storyline in Dissidia games. Some people might complain, but I was drawn right into it. (Maybe I'm easily entertained, heh.) Like I said, definitely to a lesser degree. Just, sometimes, I really get frustrated with fighting the AI. (And because I don't know anyone in my area that also plays Dissidia or Duodecim, multiplayer is no good. No AdHoc Party on my PS3, either - the WLAN Switch on my PSP is unfortunately broken.) That's all it is.

As for the FF series by itself, I will say that my favorite actually is FFX, so I can at least agree it was a great game. I admit that I was originally on the fence about FF12, struggling between what I agreed with and what I disagreed with. But ironically, FF13 saved it from borderline and actually made me like 12. Go figure on that one, heh. (Before 13, honestly, what FFs I had played, I honestly didn't think were overall bad. Not even FF8, and I couldn't stand Squall at all, at one point.)

@BohepansTheThird None of the FF's were really BAD games yet, some of them are with my favorite games of all time (FF5, FF9), not even XIII was a bad GAME in my opinion. It just really sucks balls because it has "Final Fantasy" win the title, and it doesn't deserves it. Even the fangame in the video above is more worthy of this title, although CT isn't even a part of the series. And, well, I haven't even played 12 yet, I can't say anything about it.

There is something called "copyright" to promote innovation, but there is also something called "fair use" that promotes innovation. Keyword, "innovation". Fair use is the reason why people on Youtube can upload AMVs but its also the reason why people can reverse engineer software.
Personally, Rom editing is the only time I really see the use of assembly. Assembly does't see much daylight these days especially when u got all these high level languages.

@cyberpsygen7 Do you have links or evidence? All I have ever read is conjecture and no evidence either way. Camp A will have you believe SE sent the letter, and can produce evidence of the letter. Camp B will have you believe a member of the team faked the letter, however they offer no evidence other than an accusation of a matching IP, if there is no real evidence it is likely a false accusation.

@nado2s they can NOT produce evidence of a real cease and desist, and square has never acknowledged making one. the main guy was super paranoid about getting sued and closed it down himself pre-emptively because he is a coward. when the flames of eternity team continued the project without him, his ego forced him to release his "true" vision. they also took their little forum private so you couldn't go in there and call him out on it anymore, so he could keep his little flock blind.

OK. I just watched this whole playthrough and now I'm watching it again. This game is great. You can really tell how much hard work the makers did to build this game. I can understand Square Enix wanting to protect their work, but shutting this down... It doesn't sit well in my stomach. At least we still have the videos. That way the memory of Crimson Echoes will live on.

I understand you need to get the word out and beta test but why not have trusted close friends do the testing and you can do all your media stuff after its out...

The ones that made FF6 and tons of other awesome games, gone...the hollow shell of crap that's 'Square-Enix' just is content to churn out crappy Final Fantasy 'gaiden' games and sidequels and shitty MMOs that are so horribly broken they ended up waiving the monthly fee. Seems as if they made enough off the newcomers that they could afford to do that.

Flames of Eternity isn't a 'more complete' version, its based on an alpha version of this game. The 'FoE' creators took content from the creators of Crimson Echoes, and did so without permission or consent. The FoE people can all go DiaFF for all I care!
So please do take care never to assume that FoE is anywhere near the quality of CE. I actually played both, and there's no comparison :)

Techniqually it belongs to Square Soft and Enix had nothing to do with the production of the first or second (I think) of Chrono Trigger and as such, I think Square Soft should get the credit, not Enix.

I've got a problem with starting-up the game: when the cat says: "CHRONO'99:3..2..1.." I see the debug room for about a second and I don't see the character name choosing part. Everybody has got the standard names, like Crono is just named Crono. I've got CE-final.ips. Does anyone know how to solve this?

This can be considered a '99%' version, not 100%, so one of the things done was a 'quick and dirty' hack to bypass the debug room, thus also bypassing the naming perhaps. Its a minor quibble considering you're able to play what few people are able to play.

@jcdenton2k ye I think you're right. But i've found out how to give the characters custom names. You can either download a chrono trigger save file editor or just save the game. Then, when you've saved the game, you must start a new game. Then the windows pops up in which you can give the characters custom names. It's quite playable. If you're searching for a more complete version of the game you need to google for "flames of eternity".

I happen to have come across the leaked alpha, and it was a bit rough around the edges but definately showed potential. I then acquired the 98% leaked version shown here and I was blown away by how fantastic it was. Then of course, a kind soul managed to release the 'gold' release, newer than this version, January 2011, 99%. Fantastic, its a shame most won't get to play it.
If you wanna find it either use google or torrents, its out there already.

It still showed the debug room but then went shortly to the Prologue without letting me alter the names or talk to those guys. Seems like it might be a 99% finished patch but I think we can only guess as the original team will probably never comment or confirm this on the leak in fear of legal action.
Still, this is pretty damn good, glad I never watched all the vids.

If I did beat this i would say it was true to the story. I'd also say how epic the story was. But since i've never played this game i'll just complain. I hated how emotional the game could get for long winded dialogue. I hated the amount of work it takes to enjoy this. Editing save games... Adding dialogue. WOW when somethings broken it's like gee "how does i edit gaym." I wish i could have been one of the few privileged to figure it out. But alas i'm dumb.

but without many of the awesome portraits, and a lot of Crono's dialog is gone.

Damn you Square. I haven't played a Final Fantasy game since VII, and the only product of theirs I would consider buying would be a Chrono Trigger remake or sequel or expansion.
Crimson Echoes seemed like exactly the sort of project that Square should have done long ago, had they even the slightest bit of desire to continue with the Chrono series.
Instead they just attack the fans who do what they cannot or will not.

Square Enix only cares about money, NOT their fans; and what they did here is proof of that. You know, if you spread it widely earlier, even as an unfinished BETA version, it would be impossible to remove all the files. SE wouldn't have been able to stop it.

I think its because this is a rom patch, and this will attract more ppl into playing the rom of CT rather than the retail product, which may decrease sales of the retail product

Well, Chrono Trigger isn't in stores anymore. It's from the SNES era, so needless to say, there'd be no sales to decrease.
But of course I assume you're referring to the DS remake. I guess that's a possibility, but Chrono Trigger DS was an enhanced remake. I mean, the only way to play the new content is to purchase that, or download that ROM.

Well, from Square's POV, you could argue that fans had two options: take basically a port of the original SNES with some extra features, or a fan-made 'true' sequel to a loved game. So Square probably thought that people would go to this than their DS version. I know I would play CE in a heartbeat over the port.

lol, really. I guess it's because I sold my original, but I'd do the contrary in a heartbeat. A portable version of a game I'd m,issed. Good deal. Not to mention, this is a simple ROM hack. I'd expect more professional quality from Square.

squareEnix didn't just pick on CE, their famous letter demanded the removal of ALL hacks, and even prohibit the teaching of other people to hack the game. From these demands I'd venture that they just don't want people (which is to say the fans) be near any hacks at all.

i dont think so,they make good mario games,but they ruined everything by mixing mario with halo and other shooting games (sonic and megaman are okay,but throwing in ghost n goblins and halo? its just too much,it sucks,i played it and it sucks,also it needs 100 hours to open)
if you want a real mario fan game play super mario bros x,cant express how awesome it is,also it gets updated on every 2 months or more

I think the game looks great, but there's alittle too much stuff in it. Its becoming too big and might topple upon itself. I think JudgeSpear left to work on a smaller, more Mario-only fan game. I keep wanting to make games with Lunar, but I keep hesitating for some reason.

yeah,judgespear did announced that he will abandon work on mushroom kingdom fusion and work on standalone small mario game and some other ppl continued to work on mushroom kingdom fusion

That being said, perhaps they didn't feel that was strong enough, so it is quite the possibility. But then again, aren't the bulk of sales in the opening week? Were there enough potential sales left, do you think?
Then again I guess from a buisiness standpoint, even one potential sale would be worth defending, so I acknowledge the point. That very well may be it.

Chrono Resurrection was shut down because it was a remake of Chrono Trigger not approved by Square Enix. Crimson Echoes was shut down because it was a ROM hack. I think Crimson Echoes should have been built on the Chrono Resurrection engine, that way we would have the the 3D Chrono Trigger sequel Square Enix would've never let us have. Anyone else agree?

Well, you can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the makers of Resurrection were attempting to profit from it. Like it was a whole new game that they wanted to sell. It was well within Square's rights, and perhaps best interest to discontinue that. But ROM hacks like Shiny Gold, or the Mother 3 Translation, among others weren't shut down, and I don't see why Square saw fit to stop this one. I can't comprehend why a non profit tribute to one of Square's games could be a threat.

Mother 3 fan translation wasnt shut down because Square did not make it....it was made by Brownie Brown and published by Nintendo....so yeah.

No, no, no. I'm well aware that they were made by different companies. What I don't understand is why Square cares so much about ROM hacks when other companies don't. I guess my wording before was kind of off ^_^; But yeah, I never was under the assumption that mother or pokemon were Square's property. Just baffled why they went to this extreme when other companies left their high profile ROM hacks alone.

It seems as if Sqaure-Enix specifically does not want any kind of "Chrono Trigger" related software being made, probibly for the single reason that they are in development of one already and want it to be new and exciting to the public and the fans, maybe they don't want anyone stealing there thunder perhaps?
It's a theory, I'm just shooting in the dark here, but that might be it.

So there's really no way to play this? A shame. I honestly don't see the logic in cancelling a little non-profit ROM hack. I mean, people do it all the time. Why was this one different? A little something the fans did out of . . . I hesitate to say it, but love for the series couldn't possibly be a threat in any way. Bah. I'll never understand big corporations.
