I love this song, my dad had this on old 78 way back in the 60-70's. It was very popular when he was a kid. I heard this recently in the Verona Restaurant in Alexandria, LA. and couldn't remember the name. The owner Tony (who is a gen-u-wine Italian) gave me the title and I decided to youtube for it. Think I'm going to run down the CD.
i love the fact that i have an italian backround! as my nonna would say to all of us "Goda Blessa you" (r.i.p nonna) but i gotta say i am so proud to have italian blood in me, especially when we won it all in '06 baby!!!!!!!!!
I think our wonderful Italian friends have it right. We in the US work under stress levels that put many people into an early grave. There is a time to work, & a time to enjoy life in general. We Americans have forgotten about the last half of that. I lived in Europe and saw how they approached life. Outstanding attitude. Good wine or beer, good food, good music, good communication between family...living life as it is meant to be. Savor life & enjoy its treasures. Ciao! Peace. Bear
God bless you Grandma. I will never forget a cpl yrs ago, you singing & knowing all the words still at 88 yrs old & entertaining us. I miss you sooo much! Grazie Mille for the post!!
Thank you !! This reminds me of when I was a kid every weekend the whole family would come over and listen to this among many other Italian songs.. They would sing play instruments along with the men playing this Italian finger game...Can't remember what it was called. Then yes of course the woman were cooking & that lovely aroma coming from the kitchen rom the whole made sauce and bread among other things. Thanks so much for bringing back the wonderful memories of childhood.....
My nonni came over from sicily & my aunt was trying to remember the words to this song from when my nonno sang this to her as a kid (it was x-mas eve & she was a little tipsy at the time). I wanted to see it for myself. Molto Grazie!
@italianman1992 Very endearing to hear bro. I think all Italian children have heard this song from their Nonni and it's a great part of our upbringing. God bless. :)
"Eh, Cumpari!" is a novelty song. It was adapted from a traditional Italian song by Julius La Rosa and Archie Bleyer in 1953, and sung by La Rosa with Bleyer's orchestra as backing on a recording that year. Shows just how much sguaraus1984 knows, the song actually originated in ITALY.
@1294pedro Actually 99% of them can't tell the difference between Sicilian, Neapolitan, Calabrese, Italian and broken English with an Italian accent. But all five plus the hybrids between them are "speaking Italian". Long story short, to the average American: Italy=Southern Italy.
Italy is narrow and long. From the northern German speaking regions to foggy Turin and Milan, from green Tuscany to Rome and down to the South. Italians from top to bottom really dont feel culturally bound.
your translation is in sicilian dialect; the italian correct traslationtion is: hei compare ci vuoi suonare? Che si suona? il flauto! e come si suona il flauto?... etc
Haven't heard this for years! when we were kids in the 50's my aunts uncles and my cousins would come from Staten Island to My grandparents house in central Jersey for Sunday dinner in the cellar of course, and my uncle Andy would play his guitar and they would sing along in Italian for hours and we would always love hearing this song!
omg we use to sing this, pepino and lazy mary when my mother was still alive. she died in 1970. In the 80's when my nonna died we found a tape with all the songs on it. aaahhh this brings back mememories. I am second generation napolitano born in the us
It's funny how Americans consider Italy being a big Naples and the national language of Italy being Neapolitan. They sometimes consider Sicily. They probably think of Milan as the capital of Fashionland and of Florence as the capital of Oldstuffland. And I look like Supermario. Just kidding :P
@DanyNicola It's very true. Now everyone speaks neapolitan dialect in italy. You actually have to travel to the inner inner parts of someplace else to hear a different dialect.
My Mom used this song to teach us kids basic Italian. It was also a great car-song -- By the time we got to latrompetta, Dad was ready to drive the car into a tree.

Thanks _ I'm part of the generation that lost my Italian once I started school because we thought to BE American meant we shouldn't ALSO speak Italian. Even when I learned Italian (Tuscani) in college, I found I couldn't speak to the folks because even though they knew 3 dialects, they didn't speak the "standard Italian". Thanks for bringing back some memories and also giving me a chance to pass some of this on to my nephews, etc.
Hey ieguy.....I have a similar story. I am Calabrese and my parent were born there and I was around the Calabbrese language all my life. However, I didnt understand that well or speak. @MultiPizzapizza My grandpa was brought up using the Sicilian dialect, but when he and my grandma went to Naples, they figured that they'd be fine but my grandpa had no idea what people were saying!
