enjoyed the twist...black rappers, athletes, entertainers have a face in the media...on the surface it may seem like a sterotypical potrayal of how black people can become wealthy but after taking a closer look...rappers, athletes, entertainers actually are business people...that's why they stay wealthy...or just some of them
It's a year since CNBC hyped "Newbos" as an important book by correspondent Lee Hawkins. BUT IT REMAINS UNPUBLISHED!
Ebony's profile of "bachelor of the year" Hawkins:
A reporter for WSJ, Hawkins is also a recording artist who enjoys traveling, running and improv. From a family of gospel singers, Hawkins' first CD, Serenade, was self-released. The woman for him is "God-fearing," cultured, educated, driven, aware and involved, and has a strong sense of identity.
check out jubril on youtube, he shows a good amount of blacks who have made it going the business route. he has some good interviews also. check him out.
the majority of athletes in the NBA,NFL,MLB are making so much money in their 20's and the majority of them are broke in their 40's, and a small percentage of them are having legal issues and illegitimate children, and sometimes there is just as much violence in the rap/hip hop industry than there is in the streets. If you consider this behavior class or OVERclass you really need to up your standards in the way you make money.
@gidgetmonroe Yeah, the real black elites enjoy generational wealth and are highly educated. Typically they have old ties to fraternal organizations. They abhor the entertainment route to "success".
actually in AFRICA many people are getting richer than ever before there are about 10 new african billionaires since 2003 alone, but AFRICA have a long way to go still.
I dind't get to see the show originally but looks like I dind't miss anything since they only showcased the usual entertainers. I was hoping for more business people.
I saw this the other day and this shit is pure rasim at its finest. CNBC states that the only way for blacks to obtain wealth is to be in either sports or entertainment being a future entrepreneur and current college student I took great offense and the documentary kind of discouraged me. Until I did more reaserch and found out that more blacks obtain wealth from business so CNBC can shove that up their ass more colleg edu blacks are aiming for the boardroom not the rim.
I know exactly where you're coming from. I've had alot of black friends
who really don't subscribe to any of the bullshit that the media feeds the public. I have one friend in particular who graduated from BC in 07' and he's a pretty bad ass Logistician who gets paid more than all my other friends ! It's bullshit, complete bullshit what we see on tv, BTW, IDT CNBC is racist just that not too many people would tune in to watch the life of a logistician or financial adviser!
@Tdahoodfella Being from around the way myself and a college student I found this documentary to be sickening also. What's even more disturbing is that their "WHITE" counterparts in entertainment are left out of the conversation of overclass. When the Kardashians and the cast of Jersy Shore are paid millions of dollars to party, get laid, and look pretty for the camera, they're not considered overclass. They're young americans there to entertain the public. Go figure.
Poor choice for a title New Black Overclass". Just what we need...another rich class of citizens. I applaud the achievement and creativity of NEWBO's, but their dreams and goals are not mine.
@30: This makes the real black upperclass want to throw up... or at least escape to Oaks Bluff!

I only wish they documented more black business people, rather than the stereotypical athlete or rapper.
It was a good documentary nonetheless.
