Just some pre-production work. Concept art, some design ideas etc. No coding work that I remember. I remember two main concepts being considered: one that was going to follow the Blizzard pattern of a three race split, and one that was similar to what The Creative Assembly did a year or two later with Shogun: Total War, i.e. having a strategic turn-based game on a territory map and individual non-scripted RTS battles that you could take command of if you wanted to.

It could have done with an extra month of tuning, especially the single player campaign, whose difficulty curve is very erratic. However, this of course conflicted with (1), i.e. the drive to get to market as soon as possible given the rival products in production.

Yes, I remember having taken a look at it a couple of years ago.

I think Machines was underrated because of a few factors.

1. It was poorly marketed by Acclaim/

2. It was a little ahead of its time and reviewers seemed not to realize that hybrid 3rd/1st person play was not only possible, but often very useful. A lot of reviews dismissed 1st person as a gimmick, but it wasn't.

3. Warzone 2100 came out the month before and was a similar, and very polished game.

I still have the original box. Shame on Starcraft for never letting this game recieve the praise it deserved. It coudl have become THE 1st person/strategic game! The voice of the units, the graphics, THE ION CANNON OMFG, THE VORTEX ERADICATOR OMSFG!! If only Charybdis had had more time to improve 1st person game and complete the missing weapons and units... I still hope 1 day someone reboots this franchise!

@MrDannian Aww that's a shame, the ending I had imagined was much better. Basically the humans in cold sleep show up/are discovered and the machines turn on them. A little cliche I know but in my head it was a cool "Oh yay humans survived....oh shit!" moment :P

Still have the disks =] I mean acclaim hit the nail on this game. I still think its one of the best RST's out there to date. I've yet to see another rts that can beat this game. God. I wish so wish they made a sequel. If not by acclaim if someone could take the rights and make one. I completely loved this game.

I freakin' LOVED this game when I was little. It is the best RTS I have ever played. Way better than the stupid Command and Conquer games. Not only was it addicting, it had an FPS mode as well! 10/10!

@VERTlGO1usa The main reason it was never popular was because it had such strong competitors.  Starcraft and Warcraft and Command and Conquer are always going tod ominate the RTS market. Not to mention, the AI in this game was very subpar. But hey, it didn't stop ME from having hours and hours of fun with it. :) I love the first person mode. Feels SO intense...

@EdwinSugar The website for this game still works, go there and download the xp file fix, if it said that you are missing some file data, mainly a dll file I think, google it and download that, put it in the machine file and it's working as new

In 2008 I cant find same good and intresting 3D strategy game.

I play Eve-Online, but it poor shit against Machines.

Wow, this still looks pretty good nine years on. And all the visuals in the titles are in-game footage rather than specially-created cutscene anims. The game looked amazing for an RTS at the time. Great game imo, although I'm slightly biased as I worked on it...(hi Mark!)

mhardisty - so why not another Machines then?! This is a great game, and because it is just machines, it has a Total Annihilation feel to it, even though it's earlier, and also because it is just machines, it is suitable for children as well as adults!

We wanted to do Machines 2, but Acclaim weren't up for it. They gave Machines a very small advertising budget...didn't really get behind the game at all. They put most of their publicity warchest behind the somewhat mediocre "Shadow Man".
