  • I'm not saying he should not be on here, But because of how he finished his career, does he really deserve to be #2?

  • Its ThaR3n!! the ol R3nster...

    - he's a bust !

  • so I guess vernon gholston would have easily gotten a sack against this guy

  • 315 punds and running a 4.6??? thats just sick. really impressive.

  • @AliBoulalaSTP he took steroids though

  • I think a big reason why Mandrich was so high on the bust list was because Barry, Deion and Derrick Thomas were all right behind him. That's three hall of famers who really defined their positions.

  • Despite what has happened on him being a bust, I still gotta give him some respect

  • In 1989 draft, GB could have picked linemen mark Stepnopki or Steve Wisniewski instead, who both became Pro-bowler

  • 1989 NFL Draft: Top 5 Picks

    1. Troy Aikman (Hall of Famer)

    2. Tony Mandarich

    3. Barry Sanders (Hall of Famer)

    4. Derrick Thomas (Hall of Famer)

    5. Deion Sanders (Hall of Famer)

Yeah... You could make the case that Mandarich was the biggest bust of all time

  • @Slotten68 DAMN

  • all this pieces are annoyingly produced.

  • wheres david carr joey harrington akilli smith cade mcown penn st rbs???? mandarich didnt live up 2 da hype but ended his career with the colts good

jamarcus russell is deff da #2 bust in the nfl

  • @MYCITY88 Mcnown harrington smith and the penn state guys yes. Carr is a bust but he doesn't deserve to be in the top 10

  • @110superdude but like carr coming out of college was supposed 2 b a great QB he was supposed 2 b the next great QB just because he was dominent in college in a terrible conference i think hes a bigger bust then art schlicther and aundray bruce

  • @MYCITY88 Aundray bruce shouldn't be on this list but David carr did have some success just because he never made it to the playoffs doesn't mean he was a complete failure

  • @MYCITY88 Carr played on an expansion team. No matter how good you are, this is a team game and it is VERY RARE for one guy to carry an entire team. I'm pretty sure even Tom Brady couldn't get the Texans to the playoffs their first 5 years. (peyton manning might've, but he's a once in a life time type player like barry sanders was)

  • @ViciousZeroEnder Brady's better than manning

  • @110superdude I disagree. Brady has a better system and team around him. Brady misses the season = 11 wins for NE. Manning misses = 2 wins for Indy... thats just my opinion... this debate obviously has legitimacy both ways. My buddies a NE fan, we debate this all the time, lol

  • @lfranklin27 Umm Brady took the 32nd ranked D# to the Superbowl! and 2) Matt Cassel is a Playoff QB with the Chiefs, and 3) If it wasn't for a miracle catch and a D# that never got off the field, and Wes Welker Dropping an easy catch he'd have 5 Superbowl Ring!

    Brady > Manning

  • @vishalb94 Wins apparently dont matter in the NFL because Cam newton was picked ROY over Andy dalton because his stats where higher. I guess it would play out the same with peyton manning VS tom brady, Peyton has the stats, brady has the wins.. By the way without peyton the colts go 2-14... without tom brady the pats go 11-6... its a team effort to win the superbowl, the pats are a different team defense wise in the playoffs.

  • @vishalb94 And Tom brady said himself that peyton manning is a better QB.

  • @stangsaleens7 WTf are you talking about?? He never said that you retarded prick

  • @vishalb94 he said it on NFL network, when being interviewed. And wins dont matter in the NFL apparently, only stats do. i feel your pain because they choose cam newton over andy dalton simply because of stats...

  • @stangsaleens7 Send me a link cuz your BS'ing for sure

  • @110superdude true but peytons a "Rawer" passer. he is a pure passer type. While Brady has the most heart i have ever seen. He NEVER gives up on a play, he never blames others and he just has a great amount of expertise.

  • @ViciousZeroEnder kerry collins and mark brunell took the panthers and jags to the playoffs in the teams second year lol championship games even

  • @ViciousZeroEnder tom brady has a better winning percentage than peyton manning

  • @MYCITY88 Carr had a bad deal. He had talent, but he was Shellshocked. It's similar to the Sam Bradford we saw last season. You can't be good when you're spending every second running for your life and getting drilled.

  • @MYCITY88 david carr isnt a bust...the texans offensive line ruined his career

  • "Greatest O-line prospect ever"

    Key word: prospect

  • Thats why you don't choose guys by only looking at them on paper. See how they play football. I barely pay attention to the combine because that is where busts are born. Mandarich was everything you would ask for on paper but he couldn't play football. The combine stuff is you against a stop watch or against weights. Football is man against man and the combine can't measure that.

  • Coming back after 4 years of not playing is pretty impressive actually.

  • Offensive Linemen are very important without good O-line look what happened to Vick.....Romo....Roethlisberger... Look at teams with good O-line...Saints(13-3)....49ers(13-3).....Ravens(12-4)....Broncos(8-8)(but they got better throughout year and amzed alot of people) this may be my opionon because i play it but serousily they are important look at Anthony Munoz was heart and soul of Bengals... Linemen are just as important

  • I am happy that he ended on somewhat of a good note.

  • don't get a tattoo of a band! that's day one stuff!

  • @Aphytus You have to build teams from the inside out. If you need a QB then yes you'll probably overdraft a guy that maybe should be 10th overall at 2. If you already have a QB you want to build around, you HAVE to go after linemen on both sides. Although ESPN is probably brainwashing you to believe only QBs and receivers affect the game, real football games are won in the trenches. Running backs and receivers are a dime a dozen.

  • Umm yeah O lineman do change games...? You can have an average QB and get good yardage if he has time to process his reads... Look around the league, the teams that finished high have good O lines

  • of course jamie dukes knows all right? HA

  • Comment removed

  • Alot of the guys on this list were victims of too much hype granted they werent that good but the hype surrounding them certainly didnt help

  • An O-lineman should NEVER have been taken #2 overall anyway. That's just plain dumb. When you get a pick that high... You draft a game changer. O-lineman aren't going to win a game for you like a QB, RB, Receiver, or even a DB. And they're DEFINITELY not players that will turn a garbage team into a contender. Regardless of how he performed, this pick was a bust the minute they made it.

You're worried about your O-line when your QB is Don Majkowski and your RB is Brent Fullwood....?!

  • @Aphytus Well, Orlando Pace, an O-Lineman, was chosen 1st overall. And became one of the most prolific Offensive linemen of his era. Did I mention at least he was a multi-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl Champ? An athlete must focus in his/her sport and place him/herself in history if destiny is approached.

  • @Cristian6927 True. But look at Orlando Pace's draft class. There isn't a Hall of Famer in the bunch (save for maybe Tony Gonzalez) Unlike this guy.... Who was SURROUNDED by them. And not just Hall of Famers... But some of the BEST people EVER to play their position in Deion and Barry Sanders.

  • @Aphytus Walter Jones, Ronde Barber, Tiki Barber, Warrick Dunn, Darren Sharper, Jason Taylor, Pat Williams. Like Pace and Gonzalez I believe they will be truly prospects to go to Canton.

Sports Illustrated wondered if Brett Favre and Barry Sanders in the same backfield together, if GB chose Barry instead of Mandarich. Perhaps Super Bowl XXXI won't be the only championship for the Packers during the stretch.

  • Who didn't run over by Reggie White?

  • @freakinyaya88 Erik Williams. He blocked Reggie one on one and won.

  • Mandarich was kinda unlucky in that he was simply a victim of insane hype. I would consider him a bust, but he's not nearly on the same level as Ryan Leaf, who flat out shit the bed. If Mandarich had been a mid-first round pick and wasn't considered to be some kind of legend coming out of college, no one would think of him as a bust.

  • what is the background music called at 2:49 please someone tell me :)

  • Consider this...if the Packers had used their pick more wisely they could've gotten Barry Sanders....that's Barry Sanders playing with Brett Favre on a team that went to back-to-back superbowls.....let that sink in

  • @mrsnruB That's almost as awesome as Jamaal Lewis and Priest Holmes both playing on the same team (they did on that amazing Super Bowl Champion Ravens team).

  • I knew this guy's daughter in high school in Northern Michigan, and I'm a huge Packers fan.... awkkkkward

  • Not going to fault him for what he did in Indy. There's a lot of busts that probably wish they could comeback and finish their career on a good note. But given where he was drafted (#2 overall), what position he was drafted as (OT, but finished as a OG), and what team drafted him (GB, but finished in Indy), you gotta think of this guy as a bust.

He's a failed Tackle that couldn't live up to expectations. GB probably thought they were getting an anchor for years to come. That's why he's a bust.

  • Let's be real--he was a bust! No excuses he just sucked at the next level.

  • My brother and I saw Mandarich before he joined the Packers.

We thought he was the biggest guy we ever saw.

We thought he would be great by just looking at him.

He was so much bigger than any other player we ever saw at that time.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • fuckin JaMarcus Russell is definitely the 2 biggest bust ever

  • It took him 20 years to admit what most of us had already known---and the fact that he showed up at training camp SOME 15 pounds LIGHTER?! Be real now, c'mon as good ad Reggie White was he would NEVER have been able to just THROW SOMEBODY LIKE THAT had Tony kept a portion of that weight---but I think that was really what exposed Mandarich BIG TIME!

  • haha Reggie White DESTROYED him!

  • How is he a bust?? He came back and finished off a high note!!

  • @sosdkny You can only count the team that drafted him. They didn't get what they wanted so he is a bust

  • @110superdude

    I guess that makes sense.

  • @110superdude That plus when you go out of the league for a couple years and most of your hype is based on you being on roids, you're a bust.

  • @110superdude That isn't always necessarily true. A team like the Browns could expect the world and don't get it. That doesn't mean the player is always a bust. Maybe the team is a bust. No matter how much you invest in something, you can't always get what you want if you yourself suck.

  • @sosdkny How is he a bust?? Mainly because of who they took him over. They picked him, an offensive lineman... Number 2 overall. 3,4,and 5 were Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas, and Deion Sanders respectively. He played three years out of his four year contract, and was cut. Need I say more?? All of the other top 5 picks... Are hall of famers.

  • @Aphytus

    ok, well put.

  • @Aphytus mandrich was an under achiever, based on the hype and where he was taken in the draft, but to me a guy like ryan leaf is a bust because he couldn't play.mandrich just wasn't as good as others thought he might be. not really his fault.he just wasn't a hall of famer.

  • @sosdkny Being a bust means not living up to the hype, it doesn't mean the guy couldn't play at all.

  • I recall meeting him in Indy. He was a very nice guy and did finish on a high note.

  • Tony Mandrich knew that Peyton Manning as a rookie was going to be a hall of fame type of qb.

  • plus he went up against reggie white..of course manderich would get embarrased thats like putting a high school cornerback on larry fitzgerald. he will get embarrased

  • if you have terrible footwork as a offensive tackle you will NOT be good. thats one of the MAIN things you have to have. like one dude said he played a position that suited him and was acutally a good guard. was never a problem never had anytime of problems except the steroids but hey at that time every one was juicing

  • at least hes not a total douche like ryan leaf

  • Tony turned out to be a pretty good guy, it just didn't work out.

  • If Tony Manderich would have played as a guard he would had a good career. I mean as a tackle you have to have good feet with speed rushers and he had horrible footwork. With him at 305 to 310 he was an ideal size for a guard at 6'6and being a guard you have to be strong your not dealing with speed rushers. Look what he did with the Colts, he became a guard and had a good career with the Colts as a starter.

  • It's weird looking at the ticker at the bottom showing projected draft picks and seeing how different things would be if those actually happened.

  • well what do you expect, it is Reggie White

  • Good point!

  • @scope1945 Very true.....Reggie White was able to make REALLY GOOD offensive linemen look weak at times. Gotta admire how Mandrich was able to lick drugs, and how he came back and had a decent career with the Colts.

  • @Shadowloks2292 I've read "more worst" comments than yours. Are you sure you're not Mandarich, cause you speak like a goon?

  • i seen more worst players than him

  • He wasn't a complete bust. He played six seasons and retired because he hurt his shoulder, a fairly normal career in the NFL. I remember watching him play for the Colts and he was a pretty good NFL lineman. He just wasn't superhuman.

I guess he struggled in Green Bay but it's common for rookies to struggle. What's the big deal?

  • 2:43.; 'The NFL's Incredible Bust'.

    I don't think so!

  • how was he NOT on steroids?

  • As a Packer fan I'm happy we took him. Shortly after Holmgren came and we got Favre and now we sit 10-0... Had we drafted Aikman or Barry, it all might have come out differently and presently I'm pretty damn happy. And yes I said we. :p

  • To me, Tony Mandarich was the Hulk Hogan of the NFL.; The strength, athleticism, the determination & the heart he had was off the charts.

As I said, before, "I'm a Chicago Bears fan, but, as it pertains to the NFL & their draft picks, such as Tony Mandarich, for example, in general, I don't think he's a bust. I think with his nick-name of 'The Best Offensive Line-Man, Ever', he lived up to it & he was a real force to be reckoned with, without a doubt.".

  • I'm a Chicago Bears fan, obviously, but, regardless of whatever NFL team/teams that I like, when it comes to Tony Mandarich, in general, I don't think he's a bust. I think with his nick-name of 'The Best Offensive Line-Man, Ever', he lived up to it & he was a real force to be reckoned with, without a doubt.

  • 1:08.; Who'd he lift weights with?

  • Casserly was right, he admitted he was on steroids.

  • Im a Packers fan and to think we could have had Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders or Derrick Thomas?? that makes me sick that they drafted this flop.

  • looks like the bigshow

  • i see when he was playing with the packers he played tackle , so the team knew he got no feet but put him anyways!!! to play tackle you need feet thats how i played, then he played guard and ended his carrer good, so the packers put in the wrong spot the wrong times againts reggie white, if he had feet reggie ( god bless his soul) would be put on the ground

  • how is he not the #1 bust? He was taken after Troy Aikman and ahead of Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas and Deion Sanders! All of which are pro bowlers and hall of famers...he is clearly the worst draft pick in the history of the NFL.

  • @VonBurgundy92 cuz ryan leaf was sposed to be the holy savior for the chargers. in fact, the colts spent a lot of time deciding between Leaf and Peyton Manning, prooving how good he was supposed to be. also, this guy came back and played well. leaf didnt.

  • @VonBurgundy92 Aundray Bruce and Akili Smith, both number one picks were worse.

  • @shelleyinthecity but they didn't have near the hype Mandarich had coming out of college...like the video explained, that ESPN cover set the expectations SO HIGH for him. Sadly, he was on drugs and his career was a huge disappointment. But just on who he was taken ahead of, despite the fact he returned, its the biggest bust ever.

  • @VonBurgundy92 Sport Illistrated not ESPN, but yeah I agree, he was kind of screwed to begin with just because he WASN'T Barry Sanders lol It's kind of like the guy drafted ahead of MJ, he could've been a decent player...but he's still a bust.

  • @TheJlkavanagh Exactly. Sam Bowie. He was taken after Akeem with the 2nd pick in '84, and was taken ahead of such players as MJ, Charles Barkley, John Stockton, Alvin Robertson, Kevin Willis, Otis Thorpe......he was taken ahead of 3 hall of famers. He was decent but based on who was taken in the draft and what they became, he is a bust lol.

  • He is not a bust. he came back and played at a high level!!

  • If it wasnt for SI he wouldnt have been as big of a bust.

  • after watching this video, i think he wasn't as bad as he was depicted

  • Wow, hell of a draft year.

  • atleast he made something of himself in the end and thats what matters

  • If he had more experience he would hav been good but they jus siced him tooo much

  • Tony shouldn't feel bad, Reggie's done that to hundreds of other players

  • Jamie Dukes said plenty about Aundray Bruce and he is black.

  • Bigger bust than Leaf. Look at Leafs class. The top 5 only has 1 hall of famer, Manning, who was the only player picked ahead of Leaf. MAndarich's class on the other hand has 4 hall of famers in the top 5, and the only one not in the hall of fame is Mandarich.

  • @BigNastyB16 Leaf was a bigger bust simply because a quarterback infinitely outweighs O lineman in importance to a team and impact on the game. Mandrich played poorly for Green Bay and cost his teams several games by his poor performances. Leaf drug the Chargers down into the very bottom of the NFL and was the key reason they did as bad as they did.

  • did anyone notice jamie dukes, the black guy, is on all of these videos saying bad things about only the white guys?

not that he wasn't right...just saying

  • Favre and Barry Sanders my god that would have been sweet

  • @enjoyitbro If they could have worked together, though. Favre always had ego issues.

  • P.S. One really sad thing about busts like Tony Mandarich and Brian Bosworth is the fact that now if someone comes out of college looking like a monster there's always going to be the suspicion that he uses steroids. Now great college players who are huge and strong are essentially guilty of roids until they're proven innocent thanks to the Mandariches and Bozes of the world.

  • If he had horrible footwork they should of switched him to guard. As a tackle you HAVE to have great footwork or players back in the day like LT, Derrick Thomas, Bruce Smith, Reggie White for him Richard Dent, Chris Doleman would go right around you or through you. As a guard you you have to have great upper body strength and leverage because a DT isn't going to go around you, they will go through you but not around you most of the time.

  • Gotta give him credit. He fell, got back up, rolled up his sleeves and finished his career on a good note.

  • @Pepinlemalin usually I would agree with you and you are right but im a packer fan so i hate this man more than cancer.we could have had barry sanders the best running back of all time.and he wouldnt have ended his career early because he would have been having fun winning super bowls and not rottting in detroit.or at least deion!!!hes not the best of all time(he thinks he is)but he is surely one of the best DBs to play the game.DT EVEN!i curse the name tony mandarich for all time.

  • @Pepinlemalin well said sir...players like him, and antonio mcdeyess (sp?) in basketball are more inspirational to me than a player who's drafted number one and just dominates (manning)

they had to take a HARD fall, and still sucked it up, and made something of themselves

don't get me wrong, i hold manning in high regard, but those two's examples tell me "quit being a bitch and dust yourself off and get back there"...love it

  • That guy came to our school to talk to the fresman football team

  • This reminds me of football's alternative to NBA bust Darko Milicic. But Tony's James, Anthony, Wade, and Bosh were Aikman, Deion Sanders, Barry Sanders, and Thomas

  • Just to think, the Packers could've had Barry Sanders... could you imagine him on that team with Holmgren, Favre, Freeman, Reggie etc? 10 straight superbowls for sure...

  • MandaBitch more like it

  • If you do steroids, you don't deserve any sympathy at all. END OF STORY!!!!

  • this guy has the exact same story as robert gallery. incredible hyped up cant miss prospect drafted at #2, drafted around hall of famers (big ben, eli, rivers, fitzgerald, etc.), sucked ass at tackle and later became a decent guard. scary

  • Could you imagine if the Cowboys really had taken Mandarich that year (as Jimmy Johnson said some of their scouts had wanted)? Jerry Jones' decomposed corpse would probably still be hanging from a Dallas street sign right now, and every passerby would still be throwing their rotten fruit at it daily.

  • i'll say mandarich is the biggest bust ever. 3 players drafted right after him were hall of famers. who was drafted after leaf? andre wadsworth, curtis enis, grant wistrom and charles woodson. except for woodson, who might be a hall of famer down the road, theres not much at the top of that draft that went after leaf. in fact, besides manning, woodson, faneca and moss, there's no other potential hall of famers in the draft.

  • @mstrblstrbhc3 I would say that Tony Mandarich is the biggest non-quarterback draft bust in history, but I still say either Leaf or JaMarcuss Russell is the biggest ever. The quarterback will always be the most important position in football, in some ways the QB is like another coach out there.

  • Tony Mandarich atleast should feel proud of his days as a Colt

  • you know what, other than a lot of busts in this list and in general, tony actually has a great attitude and seems like a genuinely good person

  • @jvigilante17 great point

  • @jvigilante17 After he got his life turned around, absolutely. It's funny how he said that about Manning and was dead on. With age comes maturity; no better example than Mandarich in the NFL.

  • @TheLastMonarch The funny thing is I think he might've done better at that profession than football. The guy was juicin and simply couldn't play @ NFL level, or @ least not at the height of all the expectations the media put on him

  • This fiasco was just a testament to how TERRIBLE the packers management and overall footbal IQ was. At that time, green bay's ownership assumed that players want to play for them SIMPLY because of their rich history WITHOUT willing to open up their wallets and bring in ppl who KNEW football. Superstar players, at that point, didn't even wanna fo NEAR green bay. It was like an outdoor prison in the north pole.

  • @dahomies85 Four things brought the Packers back out from that abyss: Mike Holmgren, Ron Wolf, Brett Favre, and the salary cap era.

  • Epic fail.

  • just think, Barry Sanders , Dieon Sanders, And DT god that is one of the most gay ass picks ever he sucked

  • @kidmaddox8 haha when u look at it now, its a horrific pick, but back then im sure packers fans wernt pissed about it as much as they r now haha
