A great version but I don't like the way he alternates the base starting on the E string instead of the A for the main melody It just doesnt sound quite right in my opinion.
Doc is one of the best! But guys...I start to have interest about country finger picking style and I notice that doc only use the thumb and the index...is it common in country music? I wonder that because in others kind of music which use fingers picking, people play with all the fingers...
Other players are all over the fretboard on this one. The Doc does it all under the left hand. And the right hand is classic "Doc" thumb and first finger. Saw him in Surbiton, England in the sixties - been trying to do what he does ever since. Getting there...
@hurls8686 Just search ''windy and warm guitar lesson'' here on the tube and you will find some great lessons, have fun. Merry christmas and happy new year!
great playing, but it is even more amazing that he is using only 2 fingers....why i ask myself?it is much easier with the rest of the fingers, and many more possibilities.Still sound great anyhow.
@johnydeltablues: Doc learned this fingerstyle technique by listening to Merle Travis, the same man after whom he named his late son and longtime performing partner Merle Watson; Merle used only two fingers, so I'll bet that's why Doc did it. The scary thing is this performance is nothing like the limit of Doc's dexterity and speed in the fingerpicking style; he was almost as adept at it as his more famous flatpicking. The man was/is an under-appreciated genius.
hey guys, fans of Doc Watson should definitely check out Kent Gustavson's new book, "Blind But Now I See, The Biography of Music Legend Doc Watson " @ his Facebook page, "Doc Watson Book".
@charchives: Don't know for certain, but Doc - like Ray Charles and other blind musicians - learned to rely more heavily on the senses he has, and has developed them to an extraordinary level. I can vouch for Doc's ear, though; when I saw him live, he could tune perfectly to pitch w/o electonic reference. Very good relative pitch or even perfect pitch. Not sure which. His time is also extremely accurate - he sets a tempo and then keeps it; it does not wander around like with some folks.
i would literally have given, and still would give, my life to have been there, sitting right in front of him. NONE whatsoever can compare to the Doctor Himself.
wonder if he has any "braille" type markers on the back of the neck to help him out? Regardless, I actually own this DVD from Homespun Records. It's a great lecture which also covers several other tunes including Deep River Blues. uh Mazing.
@chazeman2 no doubt! I mean with my limited skills I can play fairly accurately w/o looking. Even in complete dark. Which is actually easier than simply not looking for some reason... go figure
@GuitarSlinger2112 No way brother. Doc just KNOWS. He is the greatest guitarist on the face of ther earth (and blind to boot) I once saw a man hand him an old Alvarez guitar, probably a 1972, and doc simply said "hmmm....alvarez, eh?"
Doc Watson just blows me away. How a blind man can play fingerstyle will always be a mystery to me. Even Tommy Emmanuel needs to look at his chords every once in a while. Awesome!
1:22 is the best part of the whole thing, that one little pause and bend of the string blew me away! the little things like that is what makes Doc a national treasure in my opinion
I think he is muting them with inside of his palm close to his thumb.. Kinda like when you play heart of gold by Neil Young. You hit the string with your fingers/pick along with your palm at the same time.. Give it a nice loud dull sound. I think the only string Doc is muting is the big E..
Vamp is the Boom Chic played with the right thumb on muted 4th 5th and 6th strings. the ring finger of his left hand is not muting anything he plays an Am chord with two fingers the middle finger is bridging two strings so the ring finger is free while Am is being held
I wouldn't say he is underrated. If you know who he is you know hes badass. But unfortunately, there are too many fallout boys our there taking away from the real talent.
