One of his best yet although a benefit for homeless was being put on in his hometown Gainesville Fl. he refused to join even for one song. A Gainesville High School graduate that got lucky but won't help the community? Mixed feelings about Tom.
:-) One of my favourite TP and The Heartbreakers tracks!!! :-D I would really appreciate it if some of you guys and gals checked out my little cover version ;-P It would make my day!!! :-D
does any one know what guitar tom petty is here i have been trying to find out for awhile now and i still can't find anything out about it. info would be very helpful thank you
I think it's a Vox Guitar. Don't think you'll find any of these at Guitar Center. He still plays that guitar on one or two of his songs in concert. He Usually plays the Rickenbacher on this song in concert.
The only cover that comes close to this original is Elvis Costello's. Saw him at the Tower Theater in Philly in '86 or so and he did "spin for hits" night. He'd invite a fan onstage and they'd spin for a song, with choices to watch "Moonlighting" on TV, watch him or get into a go-go cage and dance. A really cute girl came up and spun this song. She completely freaked in the cage to it. He almost couldn't do the song, he was so intent on watching her. Maybe the best memory of concert song ever!
I was a 16 year old Australian/ American girl exchange student in Whittier California 1972-73 all the way from a small country town in n.s.w. Australia... & raised on promises. And Your country blew my mind...Tom Petty's song is a timeless reminder of the best and worst of Your very Great Country!!

oops we have a virtual lyric profit, , sry dude what I meant was I used to live on 441 n sheridan in hollywood , and if she could hear cars going by out on 441 like waves crashing on the beach , it must have been quite the accident. or maybe you just have too much time on your hands to analyse peoples comments hmmm.
Uhh, its a simile, pretty straight forward. I like this song so much because of its lyrics. I lived on the beach in the Marina Del Rey and yes I can appreciate the comparison of the cars to waves. The whole piece shows good writing and imagery. Something that lacks a whole lot these days in pop music.
He could hear the cars roll by out on 441 LIKE the waves crashing on the beach.
Get it? The cars sounding like waves to him. 441 is in Gainesville Florida, where Tom grew up. And, no, I'm not a virtual lyric profit either, just someone who pays attention to lyrics.
Petty says that he wrote the song while living in California:
"I don't remember exactly. I was living in an apartment where I was right by the freeway. And the cars would go by. In Encino, near Leon Russell's house. And I remember thinking that that sounded like the ocean to me. That was my ocean. My Malibu. Where I heard the waves crash, but it was just the cars going by. I think that must have inspired the lyric."
do you notice that singers now never look like this. everyone today has to be cute just think of the talent we would have missed out on if everyone had to be pretty .back then and think of the talent we are missing out on today and don,t even know it.the cute guy or girl never has to try as hard therefore not quite as talented.mabey someone will get a clue one of these days but i doubt it.

american girls are whores...
they love money more than penis...
that's why they only sleep with rich men, even if he is 80 years old...
which also makes them disgusting, by the way...

@airsoftloverusp the best way for men to treat AMERICAN GIRLS is to "HUMP AND DUMP" them....
they are sluts anyway, and it won't make a difference on them...
FOR CHRIST'S SAKE, if you value your stuff, money and life, don't give them the privilege of becoming your girlfriend, or worse, wife!
Jesus Christ wasn't afraid in fighting the status quo if he thinks it was EVIL...
MARRIAGE IS AN EVIL INSTITUTION...
AMERICAN GIRLS ARE SHAMELESS CHEATING SKANKS..
WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?
