I dig everything Carmen did and heard her many times in person in various settings. One time in 1969, when Jimmy Rowles, Monty Budwig and Donald Bailey were working at a place in Marina Del Rey, a bassist friend of mine and I went to hear them and surprise surprise, there were Carmen and Sass both sitting in with the trio. What a pleaseant evening and extra special treat.
@ocnoreen What a special treat that must have been...went both nights Sassy & Carmen played Hollywood Bowl in 77 and they were incredibly great with many standing ovations...in 67 as a teen, slipped in to Shelley's Man Hole & experienced Carmen for the first of many, many times and it was awesome... Atlantic Lp's from that era are the greatest but then anything Carmen is!!!
@bradly2007 Yes, it was special and that time will not come again nor will there be other singers of that caliber in the jazz field. There are some newer singers I admire, but none will ever touch Carmen, Sass, Morgana, Anita, Lady, Dinah, Irene, Nina. Need I go on???
@ocnoreen You are right we will never see a group like those Iconic Legendary ladies...would add Esther, Ella, Peggy, Gloria Lynne, Eartha and too many to count from that wondrous era and luckily got to see most....today closest is Carmen Lundy, a totally awesome original who composes and writes great original material mixing her own with standards and thnext is the highly & sadly overlooked Diane Schuur whose recording output is awesome and another great one to experience live!
@ocnoreen Anita o'day isnot in the same class as these ladies. Please be honest and stop trying to rewrite history and usurp African-Amedrican culture. Sincerely yours
@bradly2007 Anita O'day is not in the same class as these ladies. Please be honest and stop trying to rewrite history and usurp African-American Culture. O'day was the "great white hope" that never lived up to the hype. Morgana King, Jerri Winters, Ann Richards, June Christy all had far better instruments than she but not the breaks or promotion. anita had serious intonation problems, her scatting and phrasing were filled with affectations. Her timbre was mediocre, she could not sing in tune.
@EXQUISITESOUNDS You are mixed up and need to pay attention to who is posting what before adding your comment...did not mention Anita in mine but while on the subject don't agree with your view of her...have enjoyed things by her and believe it is a matter of opinion and to each his own...don't care what you think about her or anyone else.
@bradly2007 I sincerely apologize Mr. Bradley2007 for posting on your comments, I was indeed mixed up in that regard. It was not my intention to offend you nor shall I submit personal insults to you or anyone else. Please have a wonderful day.
@ocnoreen Just a friendly correction: This isn't Frishberg's Listen Here. (You can find videos of that on youtube by searching listen here frishberg.) I'm not sure whose composition this is, though, and googling lyrics turns up nothing. I'm guessing it's the song on McRae's Live in Tokyo cd, but I don't own it. (Probably also her Carmen McRae: Live dvd, which I also don't own.)
Carmen is one those singers where she seems to sing freely, even though she might not be always on the correct pitch. She is truly an authentic singer, which legacy cannot be ignored..!
Always loved Carmen doing this song live...jazzy & funky, moments I always loved from this legendary giant & when she breaks in to scat, nothing compares...Bravo Carmen and you are missed!!!
Does anyone know what this piece is called or who composed it? I can't figure it out, Carmen doesn't know on the full recording (DVD or CD) either....
I know it sound stupid but....has anybody the chanche to actually know her? (TEESCHA25 wrote my mother..it was a joke I guess) I just simplu think she was/is a genius, a great GREAT artist and an incredible woman. I'd kill to meet somebody that can tell me something about her life.
Carmen knows how to take a composition and make it have soul and swing. This performance is a classic example of her talent, God Bless Carmen. We miss her so much.
Funky and soulful, this is a great example of how Carmen never was less than brilliant no matter her age...a masterful singer who was wondrous to watch to the end and I was at her last LA performance and we stood many times for Carmen...Bravo Carmen and we miss you...this performance is brilliant as usual!
Carmen made it very clear that it is far more important how you use your voice than the quality of the voice you may have. This is why she is a jazz vocal great with half the vocal range and beauty of so many of her contemporaries.
@smokey4149 sorry to respond again but you have to realize that this performance was two years before she was force to retire because of emphysema so if you are a fan or critique of the Great McCrae you will not be so derrogatory! She truly was one of the best; up there with Holiday, Fitzgerald, Vaughn and Etta Jones
You know, it's really hard for any female singer to keep their voice primed in their old age. Menopause can certainly wreak havoc by dropping your range and giving you chronic dry throat. I'd say that considering Carmen had aged AND was a smoker when this video was shot, she retained her voice incredibly!!!

Great performance, and the funkiest keyboard player ever! I don`t even know his name, but he is right up there with Zawinul and Bob James

She sounds like an inspiration for Flora Purim with the swinging funky uptempo beat.

Wasn't this in Japan? or she's wearing the same dress.
If it was In Japan then, she also sang "Black Magic" that was greatest.
Tokyo Music hall ....I can't think of it.
