I've heard Bonfa play it a dozen different ways but this arrangement is the best. and Caterina Valente just makes it perfect. Thank you for posting this.
He was a wonderful guitarist. It is a wonderful gift that he has given to the world: his music. He was in many ways a creative genius...and after all, isn't that what we all want in our lives?...to be creative?
Does she not remind you a little of Audrey Hepburn in this clip? Haven't heard her n years until my daughter introduced m to youtube last week. Thanks for putting this up. mcerin64
@mickerin64 When I first saw this, the first thing I thought was she looks very very much like a young Audrey Hepbun. You can't escape it, This is a wonderful and rare video, wonderful its on YT.
Just beautiful. I love the violons section with the with the percussion behind...very nice. No more music like that today...and probably not for the next generation too.
Emocionante...
God how I love that woman....I believe she recorded this song in English...and I have not heard it in years...cannot find it anywhere...She has a fantastic CD in Italian...I've ruined 2 CDs of it so far...she had a HUGE hit in the US with Granada in 1954...she is still beautiful....sigh!
The more I listen to this song, the more I like it. I would ask NORMALAB to please let me know the name of the video or if it is in DC in order to buy it. Thanks a lot.
Wonderful Bossa Nova music. Caterina and Luiz perform brilliantly together. It's so beautiful, that it makes me cry. I wish Bossa Nova music would make a comeback.
Bossa Nova need not make a comeback. It has flourished since its birth. We who love bossa nova shall keep the flame bright eternally. It's like Kaiser Permanente.....it will "thrive". !!!
Harry Belafonte was not in the multi-awarded 1959 movie "Black Orpheus". Based on the play "Orfeu da Conceição" by Vinicius de Moraes, adaptation of the tragic Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice and setting in the modern Rio during the Carnaval. Two songs of the haunting soundtrack became classics of the Bossa Nova (the new musical movement was in in its dawn at the time) : Luiz Bonfá's perennial "Manhã de Carnaval" & "A felicidade" by Antonio Carlos Jobim/Vinicius de Moraes.
Apparently you get confused since "Black Orpheus" has its similarities to the Dorothy Dandridge-Harry Belafonte 1954 musical "Carmen Jones" by director Otto Preminger's that, via Oscar Hammerstein, moved Bizet's opera to the Korean War era. Nevertheless, Harry Belafonte recorded the well known "Manhã de Carnaval" in his CD "Folk Songs from the World" back in 1997.
I never knew HArry was in a play of the same name. But Elizeth Cardoso sang the song while Marpessa Dawn (Eurydice) lipped it and Breno Mello didn't play the guitar (Orpheus)...sadly, all four are gone now. :-)
The song "Manha De Carnaval" (Day of Carnaval), was composed by Luiz Bonfa, lyrics by Antonio Maria. It is known today as "A Day In The Life Of A Fool", courtesy of Carl Sigman's awful English lyrics...
I love Caterina and Luiz! This is a meeting of two great talents.
This is wonderful ,Bonfa was /is a all time great but Valente could possibly the greatest female singer of them all ! She was /is so talented .Would love someone to post her stuff with the Edmundo Ros band ,in my opinion it was one of the best things both she and Ros ever did!
Superbe. This melody sounded familiar. Because is was A Day in the Life of a Fool from the great Nana Mouskouri (but I remember an other cover in France, wih hummings on this music, maybe Marie Laforêt or Françoise Hardy, unfortunately my memory is not in good shape and I did not find the title, which I hate... lol).
Mach doch mal was mit der Gitarre - vielleicht ganz verrückt mit einem Liedermacher Reinhard Mey, Hannes Wader oder Andre Heller - vielleichteine interessante Konstellation
Beautiful. Talented. Sang in German, French, Italian, Spanish, and English (and I may have left some out). And very, very, popular. Five stars from me!
In reply to map35, this was most likely The Hollywood Palace, an American variety series she co-hosted in 1964-65. It's also possible it might have been from a TV special, too.
La bellísima voz de Caterina, su extraordinaria virtud de tocar la guitarra, la melodía fabulosa de un enorme compositor y la historia de un Orfeo negro es insuperable... Mi corazón está con este momento
