@ Strasburg1991 - Thank you for your interest in the locomotive. In a word, money. A large number of the volunteers have a desire to bring the 604, or as she would be in the future, BC&G 4. The problem is the needed money to restore the locomotive.
@NorfolkSouthern Rules - I have been away ffrom the museum for some time now. It would be easier to say what she doesn't need done, the running gear is in great shape. It had just been done when she went out of service. If you'll pardon the pun, the train of thought is that the only way you'll see steam in Spencer is either with visiting locomotives such as the Flagg #75 or #126, or if the Shay gets restored. The powers that be would rather see that engine run than the #604/#4.
Thank you for your interest in the 604. I am a volunteer with the museum so really do appreciate any time someone shows interest in the old gal. The locomotive is in the paint shop. It saddens me to say that as of right now, there are no plans to restore the locomotive. I deeply encourage you ask about the engine any time you visit the museum. There are lots of volunteers who would love to see the locomotive run again.
@nandw1218 Anything new with the engine? She was the first real train I rode when I was young, she was "mine" according to a 4yr old me! I would love to see her again! What all has to be done to her?
I saw the 604's tender sitting outside the roundhouse next to the turntable, but I couldn't find the actual locomotive. Maybe it was one of the ones in the restoration shop in the roundhouse. I didn't look at that part of the roundhouse as much because nobody was working on the locomotives.
