Already a huge Byrds fan, I bought "Younger Than Yesterday" in April of 1967. I was still possessed by McGuinn's 12 string sound and the Miles Davis---John Coltrane stuff he was doing on "Eight Miles High" was like nothing anyone else was doing. It was even, IMO, beyond Sgt. Pepper. Then I heard this song and "The Girl Who Had No Name" and everything changed again. The Bakersfield sound, although still in it's infancy, had been redefined.
Great tune. Sometimes considered the 1st country rock ever written. But can be debated? McGuinn's Mr Spaceman, the Everly's Gone Gone Gone or Buffalo's Go & Say Goodbye (influenced by Chris) were earlier. Anyway great tune.
Listen to Nashville West (which featured a young Clarence White) - I'd say that was some of the first country-rock ... I've got some Nashville West in my uploads - great stuff!
Oh yeah definitely. I know the (later) Byrds' version of Nashville West. It's definitely country rock and very innovative. But this song by Chris is earlier, isn't it?
@BobSeger1981 what are you kidding he is a great musician he plays guitar harmonica autoharp piano pedal steel sings he is in the songwriters hall of fame
@BobSeger1981 Thats not true the first thing that happened was the producer of the doors went to jail because somebody mailed him a box of pot ,john went to pick him up when he was released from jail the next thing that happened was somebody else from the spoonful was caught with a trunk load of pot the dealer was arrested the spoonfuls manager got him a lawyer and he said you can cop a plea and probably get out of it he talked to another lawyer and he said lets fight it

This is an under-appreciated Byrds song. Great talent, Chris Hillman.

This was the first song the late, great Clarence White played on with The Byrds.

Nashville West was Clarence White, Gene Parsons, Gib Guibeau and Wayne Moore - that band played in 1967.
The Byrds "Younger Than Yesterday" was also released in 1967 - so its close - but I'd say Clarence was a huge innovator and ahead of the game.
