I can't believe no one has noticed that they totally come out of time during the buildup to the final verse. Someone didn't know where ONE is, when they break into the final chorus.
Gutiar and drums were on different sides of the beat. Amateur mistake. Would rather see the nice polished Weezeer than the Weezer that didn't know where One is.
@Drumkid69 I'm not really sure what you mean. Without knowing exactly what you mean, I'd like to defend this performance by saying that the song is in 3/4 and in a 3/4 rock beat, the first beat is stressed and that's also where the chord will change, unlike in 4/4 where the 2nd and 4th beats are stressed in rock and the chord changes on the first beat.
Brian was playing an earlier "one" and the rest of the band were playing a later "one". The monitoring must have been bad. Sounds kind of messy all around actually.
YES, the need Matt Sharpe back! Desperately. I don't even want to hear that Rivers writes all the song, we all know that. Matt brought something just as good, STAGE PRESENCE!
@runnersdialzero33 I hear you, but people give him lots of credit for a reason. obviously overall the songwriting has degraded majorly since those albums, but he had a hand in writing his own basslines or at least improvising on them and his bass tone was fierce. not only that, but he can sing a great falsetto and harmony vocal. listen to his Rentals stuff, he's a solid songwriter himself. I think his credit is deserved.
@ia5662 The songwriting changing had nothing to do with him - the failure of Pinkerton really fucked with Rivers' head.
As far as basslines - video exists of Rivers showing him "El Scorcho" note for note. Rivers' original "Tired of Sex" demo is a bit of a revelation, too.
Matt had a great falsetto, played bass well, great stage presence, and wrote some good stuff on his own. However, his status among many as the major factor that made early Weezer what it was is grossly exaggerated.
Great emotion. Wow, watching that compared to the Budokan version.... you can see the difference that youth makes. Raw, thin and mildly insane versus polished, cut and balanced
wookiebru, there used to be the album version with just the cover art sitting on the screen, but someone removed it. not sure why. only non-live version ive seen is sped up a bit, annoying as hell.
@TheCerfs1 Look. Matt Sharp has said himself "I haven't listened to the new Weezer stuff.. But if its bad, it would still be bad if i was still in the band". Rivers wrote pretty much all the songs. Matt was great onstage and was the great thing about seeing them live but with the music he didn't really do much. I think that the period between Pinkerton and Green changed so much for Rivers he had to change!! Mykel and Carli died, Matt left, everybody called Pinkerton a failure What do you expect?
Pork and Beans seems to redeem themselves pretty well. but other than that, I only find "This Is Such A Pity" and "Dope Nose" (not even the album version, the demo the recorded before the album) to be substantial to The Blue Album and Maladroit.
in my opinion, blue was the best and pinkerton was close to as good as blue. my favorite part about both albums is that i liked every song, so i could listen to each album the whole way through and enjoy every minute. i think half of the red album is really good, the other half is meh, but greatest man is freakin amazing!
dude! i mostly agree with you, except id swap pinkerton with maladroit, and i like most of green too. but dude, i know, greatest man is icredible, Dreamin has gotta be the best on the album tho
lol was Matt saying "IM TAKIN' A SH!T, TAKIN' A SH!T ALL DAYYYY" at :43 ??

@ia5662 True, but he wasn't the reason the first two albums were so great. He gets way more credit than he really deserves for their early stuff.

This only proves that Weezer was WELL before their time, because this sounds like it would be a modern rock hit!
lazrpo1nt3r 3 years ago 5
yeah but its sad that with matt sharp went the part of the band that made it great, they are at best mediocre in comparison to the blue album.
