@MrFunkymongol I would recommend going to the doctor...sounds infected to me. This is last resort for most people and if you can go and have it surgically removed, definitely do that first.

@horseygirlsec25 Sorry to hear that...it is pretty painful afterwards sometimes. To help with the pain in the first couple of days, I usually just take some pain killers...the stronger the better. I find that keeping a bandage on it of any kind puts too much pressure so I leave it open and just clean it with hydrogen peroxide multiple times a day. Keeping it clean is the most important part...if it gets infected, it could spread to the bone and your toe would have to be removed.

I am ready to do it again and soak it longer this time.

The doctor told you right though. Cutting in an arc is the wrong way to cut...cut your nail straight across and don't try to "dig" into the sides to make them shorter.

Granted when you do it like this you have to be careful because any number of things could go wrong (poke yourself, use something dirty and get an infection), but like I said...I've been doing this a long time and have never had an infection. The only way to permanently stop a nail growing is to put phenol or silver nitrate in the nail bed to kill the roots.

Here I was thinking nobody else did routine nail avulsions at home! I started when I was 17 and would have to repeat about once a year. I even had a collection building through the years but sadly when I moved out of my brother's house 4 years ago the collection was thrown out, I had a shot glass full of big toenails. What I used to do was steralise a hunting knife, use the tip of the curved blade to lever out one corner, lift up that corner and pull the whole thing off.
ive done that before with my middle finger, i caught it n the car door, and it turned black, so like.. it was wiggling on my finger, till i decided to just bite it off.... i grew back though, but it was just hanging by like.. 2 pieces of skin... not a big deal..
Don't be sorry :-P It's really not a big deal for me anymore since I've done it so many times. As for my "small ass toenails", yeah they're pretty small haha. Granted when you do it like this you have to be careful because any number of things could go wrong (poke yourself, use something dirty and get an infection), but like I said...I've been doing this a long time and have never had an infection. The only way to permanently stop a nail growing is to put phenol or silver nitrate in the nail bed to kill the roots.

Here I was thinking nobody else did routine nail avulsions at home! I started when I was 17 and would have to repeat about once a year. I even had a collection building through the years but sadly when I moved out of my brother's house 4 years ago the collection was thrown out, I had a shot glass full of big toenails. What I used to do was steralise a hunting knife, use the tip of the curved blade to lever out one corner, lift up that corner and pull the whole thing off.

ive done that before with my middle finger, i caught it n the car door, and it turned black, so like.. it was wiggling on my finger, till i decided to just bite it off.... i grew back though, but it was just hanging by like.. 2 pieces of skin... not a big deal..

Don't be sorry :-P It's really not a big deal for me anymore since I've done it so many times. As for my "small ass toenails", yeah they're pretty small haha. It's just because when a nail is pulled out repeatedly it doesn't grow back in the same anymore. Eventually I'll just have a doctor put some phenol in the nail bed and that'll be the end of it.
