  • I am listening to the books on audiobook. I have a question for anyone who has read the first 2. The narr. Calls Devy "davy" in the second book. How is her name pronounced?

  • I liked this book, anyone have some recommendations for others?

  • @cartoonconn Read the second book if you haven't yet. It's called The Wise Man's Fear. Also check The Best Epic Fantasy list on Goodreads.

  • @bts1911 Reading it now. That goodreads list is really helpful. Thanks.

  • 4 people are not of the lethani

  • love the book... but i hate denna... don't know why...

  • I am seriously so in love with his books. I got them from the library but now I want my own copies

  • Sooo amazing, love this book!

  • One of the best writers I have come across in many years and one of the best novels I have read. Can't wait to finish the trilogy - please don't take too long to finish the last book Patrick!

  • WARNING! This guy's book can cause severe addiction and day dreaming!

  • awesome interview even though i only wanted to watch this so that i could learn how to pronounce Kvothe lol

  • @hoychristopher1 glad I'm not the only one!

  • seriously?? everything you got out of that interview was a normal, nice looking guy who only was passing by?

  • this is what i love so much about the book ... there are no dragons no black wizards which burst you down with some hilarious powerfull energy spells, it just makes u read and read because the magic is so different and every character gets an own individuality and its just so difficult to describe and thats also the reason why this book is my favourite one... best author

  • I can so relate to this guy - he is amazing and a true inspiration!

  • I don't know what's so "creepy" or "scary" about the black guy... hilariously bad timing yes but maybe I'm missing something about the fear factor. He's a lot cleaner looking and better dressed than Patrick is. I love this book and it's obvious that he has a brilliant mind but I want to put my hubby's beard trimmer up to my screen right now. If I saw him on the street without watching this interview I'd feel inclined to give him some spare change or to ask where to find me own lucky charms.

  • People who like fantasy check out Andrzej Sapkowski ;)

The Witcher rulez any fantasy book out there, imo.

  • The real life Bearmaster!

  • creepy guy is in fact creepy!

  • i finished name of the wind 2 weeks ago and wise mans fear 2 days ago i can't w8 until the stone door !!!!

  • I can't watch this review without mentally shaving his beard...

  • Hold on to your lugnutts.. It's time for an overhaul !!

  • FUCK AMBROSE!! FUCK HEMME... Whats happening Fela? :)

  • One of the best books I've ever read... simply amazing!!

  • 4 people don't know the name of the wind.

  • Just thought I'd mention that Auri is possibly the greatest character ever invented

  • Comment removed

  • dude this guy is my grandmas cosins son or something like that

and a new york bestseller author fuk yeah

  • People either give these books 4-5 stars and a great review, or 1-1,5 stars and a crappy review. Appearently people completely love it, or hate it.... In my case; THIS BOOK IS SOOO AWESOME.

    End of story

  • I just finished "The Name of the Wind" & I loved it already started on the 2nd book.

  • the black guy at 7:20 was hilarious.

  • really its not that boring , its not at all boring ILOVEIT!!!!!!!!

  • What is Kvothe's greatest gift?

  • now i have a mental picture to go along with the word face-bear... just look at his beard! great books pat, keep them coming :)

  • YOUR BOOK(S) ROOOOKS!!! :)

  • scary black guy 7:20

  • @irishhound999 i lol'd

  • I just wanted to know how to pronounce his name

  • Skip to 7:17 to hear how to pronounce "Kvothe"

  • Anyone else start starring at the black guy in the background?

  • @TheyCallMePhilip I started to, but then got a little creeped out and stopped. lol

  • Rothfuss and G RR Martin should have a beard fight. I love both their books, how else will I decide who is the best?

  • he looks like a member of mastadon or zack galinfiniakas's brother

  • Thumbs up if you noticed the creepy guy at 7:21 !

  • @SirAzrael123 since you mentioned it i was anticipating it and i was actually surprised! my heart skipped a beat!

  • @SirAzrael123 It's the guy from the first Predator movie

  • "I hate mutton, Reshi. It tastes like wet mittens."

  • Just starting to read this book now, it's interesting so far and I can't wait to finish. Mostly I watched this vid just to see how Kvothe was pronounced lol. But did anyone else see the Cee-Lo Green looking dude at 7.20? Bit creepy, no? :P

  • To the point.. I want to have beers with him.

  • I've never heard a more irritating, arrogant individual speak.

After all the editing that went into 'A Wise Man's Fear', he uses the word 'speculative' 3 times in the first three pages, and then goes right back into his overused themes of Kvothe's lack of money, and his always awkward interaction with women. Rothfuss is an amateur and his editor an idiot. His only genius lies in his pacing: I'll give him that. Although, by the sound of his voice, he'd probably like me to give him a little more

  • @heathnash really? have you heard yourself speak recently? Because you take the cake on that one buddy.

  • @kiba2468 You are the epitome of an imbecile. To think, or should I say not to think, you question my speaking voice in a virtual non-audio forum rather than my words just goes to show what a moron you are. You are losing an IQ point with every comment you make, so I'd stop now before you are clinically diagnosed as brain dead.

  • @heathnash You mad kid? Clearly you are for some reason. And everything you just said is all irrelevant anyways. Assumptions make you yourself look like an idiot. I would say stuff it with the school yard insults and stop acting like a petulant child, but schoolyard kids dont exactly use such big words. But then again, its clear your insecure about your own intelligence, hence why you talk like you do.And to insult patrick rothfuss when your just some random person of no importance? lol classic

  • @kiba2468 1) What I wrote had particular relevance to Rothfuss's work, specifically critical to an overused idea and a lack of editing.

    2) I did not make any assumptions, rather critical statements with a gag at the end.

    3) I don't need to be insecure about my own intelligence when there are people as stupid as you walking this earth.

    4) My only insult was directed at Patrick's rather pompous American flamboyant voice, which I found hilarious.

    5) You are hilarious.

  • I love the people who insult and criticize Patrick Rothfuss. Especially on youtube where they try to push their "superior intellect" on people, but don't realize their making bias comments on somebody richer, smarter, and good natured all around than them. Jealousy is such a terrible burden. Especially when you have to read it from somebody...ON YOUTUBE by the way...who thinks their comments mean something. Who think they're actually important. Its all great comedy though to laugh at them.

  • God. listening to him talk about fantasy is like listening to my own thougts... no wonder I love his books.

ps. His beard is the manliest beard ever seen by other beards.

  • He obviously looks more like Elxa Dal lol

  • This guy is so down to earth and modest about his achievements.

With that said, I'm guessing he rips a mean bong.

  • 3 people were killed by the Chandrian.

  • @Clarkd87 Then how could they vote?

  • 7:18 Ohhh...so you actually do pronounce the "v" in "Kvothe". I always thought it was pronounced as a "u", since the book says his name sounds similar to "Quothe". Useful bit of clarification for me.

  • My favourite book of all time.

  • Good book.

I'm taking my time reading the lines and inbetween so I don't have to wait to long for the next part.

  • @jaknife99 second part is out. But I expect the next one is gonna take 4 more years >:( Must be patient, must be patient...

  • I have found my favourite author. Best wishes Patrick!

  • Zach got pale.

  • I would happily wait 4 more years for 'A Wise Man's Fear' , if it meant Pat's revisions were to be finalized to his complete liking and approval. I haven't enjoyed reading a book so much as I did when reading 'The Name of the Wind', and sure, everybody gets mad at me when I tell them the next one isn't coming out until next year, but it's the LEAST I can do to explain to them that had Rothfuss rushed his first book, then it would of (possibly) been just that less of an amazing story.

  • @Earthtwo1

I also tell them that if I ever read a single post from them on any forum or fan-page that I deem to be them bitching or complaining about the time scale upon which Pat has wrote his works, then I will slap them in the face with a random body part.

  • ehhe, that was @myself.

  • I'm supposed to do a book reading pretending to be him (reading the part where he sings song in bar and string breaks, btw). It's going to be godamn impossible to get my hair like that AND make a beard in a single weekend. I don't know if I even have a shirt like his... I don't wear black... This was all me bitching about how hard my life is.

In other news, I too hate that the book is taking so long, but wutevs I would rather have a book take 2 years than waste 5 hours, $20 and learn it sux

  • love his beard! haha :D

  • A craftsman and perfectionist. I hope he write more books.

  • 4:05 But you added a damn dragon. I'm sick of the dragon cliche, but you added one! I thought, maybe this is a fantasy book without a dragon, then there was one. Sure, it wasn't called a dragon, and had a slightly modified description, but most authors do that with their dragons because they don't want theirs to be cliche.

Now I find out I've been pronouncing Kvothe wrong...

Anyway, the book is pretty good. I found it a bit cliche, but it's really entertaining.

  • @Dianeva89 Dude but even though it came over a little cliche, it was also one of the best parts of the book, connecting Diana and the Chronologer(ithinkhewascalledthat)... :D

  • Same thing as George R.R. Martin...people...let them work.....I really don´t care if it take years on the making...I rather be sure that when is out I will have the time of my life reading it.......there are a LOT of great writers out there that can fill in between......go Mr. Rothfuss and go Mr. Martin.....take your time and do it right!!!!

  • Every single letter, word, sentence was compelling to its teeth.

Best book I've read in years.

  • On his blog he said that the Wise Man's Fear is supposed to come out March 2011 :D

  • Ahahahaha... he IS Kvothe...

  • this trilogy WILL one day be a live action movie, its too good not to be. It will rival the lord of the rings.

  • I don't think movies could do the series justice. It's just too awesome for it to be on the big screen. No actor could portray Kvothe perfectly or any other character in the book for that matter.

  • Comment removed

  • this trilogy would make possibly the greatest movies of all time

  • I met him my mom knows him too

  • If he wrote it all why aren't the other ones out yet? I want!

  • @xXKrazyLepreconXx He is still reading it through thousands of times to make it as perfect as the first book. But don't worry, he wrote the final release date in his blog.

  • My god he is almost as awesome as his book

  • the beard is all powerful, 'tis blasphemous to deny the beards almighty power

  • I actually am related to him... by marriage. But then again, isn't everyone in Wisconsin related. eh?

  • lucky

  • I love his last name :D its the same as mine... i wonder if im related to him

  • such a nice person!! he really looks like a gentile and magic...he´s married?

  • yep and now a dad

  • no way, the beard kicks ass

  • power beards are good.

  • Can't wait to meet him. He's coming to my college to teach a class I'm in and sign books. How ironic that I should have the last unicorn right next to me as this is playin

  • with the merlin-sage of t. a. barron, its the best book i ever read

  • devil went down to georgia

  • jajaja yeah¡¡ he looks like Kilvin ..maybe he took his face to make him

  • i wish he would have an other 14 years to wright the second book as brilliant as the first one but hopefully i will be great without that much time...GL Patrick Rothfuss

  • Brilliant book, can't wait for the others!

  • Enhorabuena por el libro, una obra maestra, I don't have words to descrive this amazing book. Congratulations!

  • dude this guy looks so epic

  • He really looks like Master Kilvin.

  • i think hes more like manet. "with wild hair and a grizzeled beard" lol

  • hell yeah xD Hes Patrick Rothfuss, Unicate ;D

I really like him. He's symphatic too ;)

  • i totally agreeeeeee!

  • Comment removed

  • @MoribundFantasy I would imagine him more like Elxa Dal

  • @MoribundFantasy

    Either that, or Manet

  • he's kool, and honest

love the book! cant wait till the second one comes out!!

  • SO down to earth.

  • Yeah , I enjoyed the book , and I'm so excited to read the second book.

I recommed it for sure :D

  • You fail then, nobody wants your opinion if you just whine how underwhelming it is. Magic is not supposed to be fireballs and naked chicks shooting fireballs. His way is, how to say, kind of unique. Not like never done b4, its just good to read something different

  • I really liked the book, and who knew he was a hottie as well? WOOF

  • Yeap, it's a nerd's wet dream for your parents and all their friends to be murdered for writing a song about mythical personalities and end up a street urchin. When we meet him, Kvothe is a fractured man, forcing himself to live in obscurity, denying who he is and hiding his own greatness from the world.

Heroes are almost always very gifted, and these arguments that Kvothe is too "godly" and has no human element are both demonstrably false and rather disingenuous.

  • @NotwenGif555 I agree, that's what I love so much about this book. He wasn't born naturally with incredible powers and doesn't know how he's able to use them. He has a large amount of intelligence and works hard for his talent. That's what makes him such an enjoyable character in my eyes.

  • I love the book "The Name of the Wind" it has become my new favorite book, Patrick Rothfuss is the most descriptive and imaginetive wrighter ive ever found. He is amazing! <3

  • Awesome books that are part of a trilogy or series:

    Dune by Frank Herbert

    Ender's Game by Ordson Scott

The Painted Man by Peter V. Brett

    Thunderer by Felix Gilman

Heroes Die by Matthew Woodring Stover

Way of Shadows by Brent weeks

Bone Dolls Twin by Lynn Flewelling

oops almost forgot Terry Pratchett's stand alone books that are set in the crazy planet of Discworld.

    enjoy! :)

  • Stand alone book recommendation:

    Charles de Lint's Moonheart,

    Guy Gavriel Kay's Tigana,

    Joe Abercrombie's Best Served Cold

    David Gemmell's Dark Moon

    Michael Stackpole's Talion: Revenant

Carlos Ruiz Zafon's Shadow of the Wind

  • Name of the wind is a cool book.

Kvothe is a cool character, perhaps a bit too cool, almost as cool as Gary Stu.

  • The Name of The Wind is one of the greatest books I've ever read. Patrick captures so much and creates such a vast world, you can't help but embrace it and love it. I can't wait til the rest of the trilogy comes out. Thank you Patrick for writing this book.

  • guys do you recommend this one and if yes i think i should wait till the trilogy finished

  • I read Twilight before I read Name of the Wind and I almost cried because I wasted my time reading the previous book. It made Name of the Wind all the better. This is the best book I have ever read, and it's just sad at how much others are missing reading books such as Twilight...

Oh and Patrick Rothfuss is completely creative. I much prefer him to other fantasy authors because he's in a different league. He's able to capture certain elements of writing like no other author I've read has.

  • quite good for a series author - oh sorry - FANTASY author (is there a difference??)

  • Oh - and one last thing :p I bought the book because I couldn't actually see descriptors such as "trilogy", "saga" etc. But it was there. The page after the fly cover, where it states "the Kingkiller Chronicle". Should have remembered "Chronicle" as one of the warning signs. But it was hidden away inside. So yes, I feel conned. Would be interesting if "stories" had to be sold rather than books i think. Some genres would start looking pretty pricey. But maybe it's just coincidence. ;)

  • Good book if you want to pay £45 for a story. Want to know the FUNDAMENTAL difference between fantasy and fiction? Pick almost ANY fantasy book off the shelf. If it doesn't have one of the following legends on the cover - part 1, part 2, epic, saga, series, trilogy, then someone's slipped up and put a fiction book on the fantasy shelf. Easy really isn't it? ;)

A somewhat disillusioned fantasy fan. I'd like to see a fantasy challenge ie. - write a STANDALONE book. No takers I suspect :P

  • there is a standalone book which is ELANTRIS

  • nice to see there's at least one fantasy author not on the gravy train then :D. But seriously - you could walk in to any library - pick out a book at random - in fact - try three, and NO ONE with an ounce of sense would bet against all three not being part of a series - i suspect even with 20:1 odds. Ask any fantasy author (although somehow I suspect that'd ellicit little more than an embarrased silence) ;)

  • Comment removed

  • Warbreaker, like Elantris, is a standalone from the same author: Brandon Sanderson.

Sanderson has written Elantris, The Mistborn Trilogy, Elantris, and is now working on the final Wheel of Time novel, and "Way of Kings" which is his version of an epic war-fantasy (It will consist of approximately 10 books). The author did say that he will still write standalone novels since he likes the format of having a full story in just ONE BOOK.

    Happy reading.

  • the greatest book i have ever read

  • I dont blame Rothfuss at all...the ambitious publishing schedule first announced by DAW of a book every two years of this size was too unrealistic. I am in the editing business and I can tell you from experience that to edit a 250,000 word novel, market it and sell it is easily a 2 year process. The success of the first book has also pushed things back. He is constantly working with foregin publishers to ensure that translations are coherent and accurate. 3 years per release would be reasonable.

  • I am a great fan of Rothfuss' writing so far. However

I agree with an earlier comment. Perhaps his desire for perfection has paralyzed him. Perhaps he is fearful that the second book will not live up to the first. Perhaps the success of his book has overwhelmed him. Whatever the case, I hope he overcomes his difficulties sooner rather than too much later.

  • Er, he already finished the entire sory. All he needs to do is get the darn thing edited.

  • Er, Craig, it's a good idea to check your facts before you make a comment!! Check his blogs. He has been doing a lot of rewriting of book 2. It's there in black and white for all to see. In a recent blog, May 11th, he says he just finished the manuscript for book 2 and managed to get it into the mail to his editor. So it was not" finished" some time ago. He has been rewriting and revising. That's what I was referring to. I would assume he will do the same with book 3. Book 2 is just now done!!!

  • Okay, you're right. Patrick said he finished the story, but I imagine there's still a lot to be done before it can be put in a book.

(Also, did you downvote my post? ;))

  • do you know? please dont tell me this is only a trilogy. do you know if it is?

  • That's what it says on his website. "Name of the Wind" is the first book of the trilogy... go have a look. You'll find a lot of interesting information there.

  • Comment removed

  • Good books take time, and unfortunately sometimes GREAT books take longer than anyone expected. All Pat and his publishers can do is ask for patience and assure readers that it will be worth the wait

  • He's earned the right to delay as much as he damn well pleases as far as I'm concerned.

Though I do agree that I wish that Wise Man's Fear would come out sooner D:

  • @bray0042 He didn't create a whole world on his own. Fantasy writers are so underrated.

  • @bray0042 the actual relese date was relesed for march 11 if i remeber right, its on his blog

  • His book is very entertaining and the content and narrative really draws you into the world he created. But this interview does not make the author seem genuine. He just sounds really self absorbed in the interview. I guess I'll enjoy the author's creativity indirectly from the text.

  • Just finished the book and all I can say is, Mr Rothfuss is playing in a different league from other writers, because he's tapped into the deep, true roots of storytelling; he has the gift of breathing life into words.

Can't wait for The Wise Man's Fear!

  • so like he's talking... the other bands are already written but not out?

  • Man is a freaking genius.

Since I read it last month I have gotten about 12 others to read it. Out of those 12, 8 finished it the same day they started it.

Absolutely breathtaking. Cannot wait for the next one!

  • wow one day its like a 900 page book it took me like 3 days

  • Great book!

One of the few fantasy books I can actually put up there with GRRM's.

  • one of the best books i read on 2008, really awesome

  • It`s one of my favorite fantasy novels along with Gene wolfes "The Wizard Knight," and the "Noble Dead Saga" by Barb Hendee and JC Hendee.

  • I adore this book too. My favourite character is Elodin. Love him!!!

  • I actually replied to

slimpickenz84 who said he had a meeting with P.R. Great book anyway... If you enjoyed any of Tolkien's books I suggest you purchase this one the soonest possible!!! Read R.Jordan's Wheel of Time the eye of the world already.... No similarities so far.... hope I can find the time to read the whole lot!!!

  • not totally finished with this one yet,but i must say that it is one of the best ive read...

  • i havent read it yet, but im really looking forward to, but im in the middle of the da vinci code, and i will not read the name of the wind until im done, but im dying to =]

  • i havent started it yet, ive had it for about a week, but im reading the da vinci code, then angels and demons, then finally ill read this. once i start reading a book, i can't read anything else until im done =S

  • This is an excellent book. I am looking forward to book 2 "The Wise Man's Fear".If you haven't visited his website, do so.

  • Me too. Just finished it 1 hr ago. April 2009 :-S

  • I know. I am just going to read it again in March and then it won't seem like such a long wait =)

  • PEOPLE DON'T READ THIS BOOK THAT WAY I WILL BE ABLE TO BUY THE SECOUND COPY WITHOUT ORDERING EARLY! lol jk read the first 10 pages and put it down and try and not finish it XD! you wont be able to XD!

  • just finished the first book, and i must say: wow! and i have ordered the 2nd one..

  • clearly borrowed? Seriously? Goodkind, and Jordan are "similar" Name of the Wind is complelty different from either, Laguin has her own unique style as well which is clearly different from Rothfuss.

I can't comment on McCaffrey as I can't stand her work.

However it is possible for people who have never read the above authors to come with similar ideas if the base of reading is similar.

  • I'm not trying to make this a whole big thing. I'm just saying I didn't care for the book all that much. Younger fantasy fans don't realize it but A LOT of Pat's ideas in the book are clearly borrowed from LeGuin and McCaffrey, with even some Robert Jordan thrown in there too. It's no easy feat to write a 700 page book and get it published but Pat is far from the greatest. That's all I'm saying.

  • got any recommendations? I actually like reading and would love to enjoy another good fantasy/fiction book =]

  • I agree that a lot of it sounded really familiar, I can't comment on McCaffrey because I do not read much of her work; but I most definately got a LeGuind "Ged" feel from Kvothe. It is still a great book, and it has many original details.

  • Best book I've read in years. Buy it, lend it out, there's isn't a single dull moment.

    Pat, you rock!

  • i thought it was pretty refreshing =[

  • I would be interested to find out what parts of the name of the wind you think are plagiarised. I've read Jordan and Goodkind and I preferred
